Harvard's Commencement (Thursday, May 27, 2027) and MIT's commencement week (May 26-28, 2027) land on the same days — a genuine two-school collision. Boston University's separate Commencement Weekend (May 13-16, 2027) hits two weeks earlier. Local news found Cambridge hotels, including the Harvard Square Hotel and the Charles Hotel, already sold out on commencement dates when checked, with the Charles running $879/night on a late-May date.
Boston doesn’t have one graduation surge — it has two
Most guides to “Boston graduation season” treat late spring as one long blur of visiting families. It isn’t. In 2027, there are two genuinely separate surges:
- Boston University’s Commencement Weekend — May 13-16, 2027, All-University Commencement on Sunday, May 16.
- Harvard’s Commencement and MIT’s commencement week — May 27, and May 26-28 respectively. Two schools, the same days, both in Cambridge.
If you’re trying to time a visit, the first question isn’t “when is Boston graduation” — it’s which of these two windows applies to your family, because the hotel pressure is real and separate for each.
What Cambridge hotels actually charge
We didn’t have to estimate this one — local news did the legwork directly, checking real listings for two 2024 commencement dates side by side. The Harvard Square Hotel was sold out on both dates checked. The Charles Hotel — Harvard Square’s best-known luxury property — hit $879/night on one date and was completely sold out on the other. Mid-range options told a similar story: the AC Hotel by Marriott ran $343-399, the Hyatt Regency ran $594-699. Several well-known properties, including the Sheraton Commander, showed no availability at all on the dates checked.
The Charles Hotel’s own commencement program
The Charles Hotel runs a Harvard Parents Commencement Club — join early in your student’s time at Harvard, and the hotel credits your stays toward a guaranteed commencement-week room. When you do book commencement dates directly, the terms are firm: a 3-night minimum (Tuesday through Thursday of commencement week), full prepayment, and the reservation becomes non-cancellable and non-refundable after February 1 of the graduating year — a fixed calendar deadline, not a days-before-arrival window.
The MIT side: Kendall Square
The Kendall Hotel, a few minutes’ walk from Killian Court, offers MIT affiliates 25% off its best flexible rate (promo code MIT7) plus discounted parking. The catch, stated plainly by MIT itself: this discount isn’t guaranteed during graduation “blackout dates,” and general cancellation policy requires notice 3 days before arrival — a real caveat, not a guarantee of availability.

Verified hotel rules
| Hotel | Min. stay | Prepayment | Cancellation / forfeit | Typical rate | How to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Charles Hotel (Harvard Square) | 3 nights | Required in full | Full prepayment required; non-cancellable and non-refundable after February 1 of the graduating year, per its Harvard Parents Commencement Club program. | $879/night confirmed for a late-May 2024 commencement date by local news; sold out entirely on another 2024 commencement date checked the same way. | Online, hotel’s own site |
| The Kendall Hotel (Kendall Square, near MIT) | Not published | Not published | Standard cancellation must be made no later than 3 days before arrival — but this is the general policy, not a confirmed graduation-specific term. | 25% off best flexible rate plus a $25/night destination fee and taxes (promo code MIT7) — MIT itself does not guarantee this rate or availability during graduation blackout dates. | Online, hotel’s own site |
- The Charles Hotel (Harvard Square): Also runs an invitation-style "Commencement Club" for Harvard parents — members earn credit toward a guaranteed room across their student's years at Harvard, joined well before senior year.
- The Kendall Hotel (Kendall Square, near MIT): One of three MIT-preferred hotels in Kendall Square, a few minutes' walk from Killian Court.
The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newton, MA | 23 min | 2,913 results as of the same check — the widest search radius of the five pulled in most of the greater-Boston hotel market, so treat this as "no scarcity signal in the wider area" rather than Newton-specific depth. Not on the Red Line, unlike Quincy. | Skews toward 3- and 4-star name brands; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below). |
| Quincy / Braintree, MA | 26 min | Checked live for the Harvard/MIT weekend, May 26-28, 2027 (Google Hotels, July 2026): 169 results, the tightest-scoped of the five (Google returned mostly Boston-proper hotels rather than Quincy-only stock) but still no sold-out signals. Structurally the strongest option regardless: the MBTA Red Line runs directly from Quincy Center and Braintree to Harvard Square in about 32 minutes, every 15 minutes, for $3 — no need to drive into Cambridge or pay for parking at all. | Results skewed toward name-brand Boston hotels (Renaissance, Marriott), not Quincy-specific budget stock; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below). |
| Waltham, MA | 27 min | 2,166 results as of the same check, same wide-radius caveat as Newton — a genuine suburban hotel market west of Cambridge with several highway-corridor chain properties among the results. | Similar mixed brand tier to Newton; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below). |
| Woburn, MA | 27 min | 2,217 results as of the same check, same wide-radius caveat — north of the city near I-93 and I-95, a highway-corridor hotel market. | Similar mixed brand tier to Newton and Waltham; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below). |
| Dedham, MA | 35 min | 4,163 results as of the same check, the widest of the five — south of the city, furthest of the five ring towns but a real fallback if everything closer is gone. | Widest brand spread of the five, budget to 4-star; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below). |
Availability was checked live via Google Hotels for the Harvard/MIT commencement weekend in July 2026; the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, and for the four inland suburbs it appears to widen the search radius across greater Boston rather than the named town alone — so we're reporting confirmed inventory and hotel tier as a no-scarcity signal, not town-specific counts we'd stand fully behind, and not a converted dollar figure.

Frequently asked questions
Do Harvard and MIT graduate on the same weekend?
In 2027, essentially yes. Harvard's Commencement is Thursday, May 27, and MIT's commencement activities run May 26-28 — the same stretch of days, both in Cambridge. If you have graduates at both schools this year, you're not planning two separate trips months apart; you're managing one very tight overlapping window.
Is Boston University's graduation the same weekend as Harvard and MIT?
No — and this matters if you're only tracking "Boston graduation season" as one blur. BU's Commencement Weekend is May 13-16, 2027, two weeks before Harvard and MIT. It's a separate surge with its own hotel pressure, not the same weekend.
How much do Cambridge hotels actually cost for commencement?
Local news checked real listings for two 2024 commencement dates and found a genuine range: the Harvard Square Hotel was sold out on both dates checked; the Charles Hotel hit $879/night on one date and was sold out on the other; mid-range options like the AC Hotel by Marriott ran $343-399; the Hyatt Regency ran $594-699. Several properties, including the Sheraton Commander, showed no availability at all.
