Graduation weekend: the date, the venue and where to stay

Mostly in May. Of the 232 US campuses on our list with a spring 2027 date, 199 (86%) start commencement in May, and the busiest weekends are May 8 and May 15, when 71 and 83 campuses respectively begin their ceremonies. 150 campuses on our list also hold a December or winter round. Each campus's exact dates, quoted from its registrar or commencement office, are on its guide and on our ceremony dates page.

It depends on the campus, which is why we grade each one. Of the 258 campuses graded, 28 are extreme, where the rooms nearest the ceremony are gone about a year ahead, and 36 are low. In the 10 college towns where we counted rooms, a spring ceremony weekend left a median 59.5% of a normal weekend's availability, and a December ceremony 100%. Check your campus's grade on its guide, and book a cancellable rate as soon as the university publishes the date.

Every ceremony date, venue and hotel rule we publish is checked against the university's own registrar or commencement office, or the hotel's own policy page, and dated. Never a forum post, a guess, or an AI-generated summary. A hotel site can't honestly send you to a rival or a town twenty minutes away once it's full; we can, because we're not selling rooms ourselves.

Look one town out. Each campus guide lists the towns within reach of the ceremony with their drive time, and 69% of the 840 towns we have mapped are within 40 minutes. All three, depending on the university, and they describe the same weekend. American universities usually say commencement for the ceremony and graduation for the day; convocation is the common word in Canada, India and parts of the UK, and some universities use it for a separate ceremony earlier in the year. We index each date under whichever word the university itself publishes, quoted from its registrar, so searching for any of the three finds the same verified weekend and the same rooms.

Every campus page carries a dated "last verified" stamp, and we re-check each campus at least once a year, and again when the university publishes its next schedule. Facts we can't confirm are left out, not guessed. That applies to ceremony dates, hotel rules and booking-pressure grades alike.
