Graduation weekend hotels, and the ring towns that still have rooms

College towns sell out a year ahead, and the rooms left carry rules most booking sites never show you: night minimums, prepayment, phone-only booking, even lotteries. We read every one at the source.

Why graduation weekend is not a normal hotel booking

A commencement weekend puts an entire graduating class and its families into one town on one weekend, and most of these towns are small. The inventory cannot absorb it, so the hotels that remain stop behaving like hotels. Below is what we found after checking 192 properties and 389 nearby towns across 158 campuses.

What college graduation hotels do differently

A room that shows as available on a booking site can turn out not to be bookable at all. Over graduation weekend the properties nearest campus change their own rules, and those rules are published by the hotels themselves rather than by any travel site.

  • 24of 192 hotelsenforce a multi-night minimum
  • 19of 192 hotelstake payment upfront
  • 7of 192 hotelsbook by telephone only
  • 5of 192 hotelsrun a lottery, not a booking

The last of those is the one people do not expect. At Duke, Cornell, Ohio State and Wisconsin, the hotel closest to the ceremony does not sell graduation weekend in the ordinary way. You enter a waitlist or a draw and you wait to be told. No amount of refreshing a booking site reaches those rooms, because they were never listed on one.

University commencement accommodations beyond the epicenter

When the campus hotels go, the answer is geography. We have measured the drive from 389 surrounding towns to the ceremony itself, and most of them are closer than families assume: 62% are within 40 minutes, and the median is about 34 minutes.

  • 100Under 20 min
  • 14221 to 40
  • 7641 to 60
  • 5461 to 90
  • 17Over 90

That is the case for booking early stated plainly. Book a year out and you are choosing among the rooms within walking distance of the stadium or the quad. Leave it late and you are choosing from what remains, which for 71 of these towns means over an hour in the car on the morning of the ceremony. At 11 campuses there is nothing honest inside an hour at all, and those pages say so rather than inventing a ring that does not exist.

What a graduation weekend does to the rooms available

We booked nothing and guessed nothing to find this out. For 35 campuses we counted the properties bookable across five equal-length weekends in the same town in one session, with the ceremony weekend in the middle and two ordinary weekends either side. The only thing that changes between those counts is the weekend itself.

Ceremony weekend A normal weekend, same town

That is the difference between the two rounds stated as plainly as we can put it. A December ceremony barely moves its town, which is why we do not write December pages in the language of scarcity. A spring commencement is a different market for one weekend: at Middlebury, Bloomington and Oxford, roughly one room in seven that a normal weekend offers is still there.

When to book, and what happens if you wait

We grade every campus on how hard its graduation weekend is to book, using published hotel rules and measured availability rather than a general impression. Of the 158 campuses graded so far, 81 are high or extreme.

  • Elevated63

A campus graded extreme is one where the useful question stops being which hotel and becomes which weekend you commit to. Those are the ones where the rooms nearest the ceremony are gone a year ahead, and where the families who booked first are the ones who will walk to the quad rather than drive to it.

Commencement, convocation and the rest of the ceremony calendar

Universities do not agree on what to call the day. Commencement, convocation, graduation and conferring all describe the same weekend of pressure on the same small number of rooms, and a family searching for convocation places to stay needs exactly what a family searching for graduation hotels needs. We index the date under whichever word the university itself uses, and quote it from the registrar rather than a secondary site.

Book-by order: which campuses need action first

Colgate UniversityMarch 19, 2027Florida A&M UniversityFAMU's next commencement is Friday, December 11, 2026, and that is nearer than most coverage of this university suggests. Its own commencement page then lists Spring 2027 across Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1, with degrees conferred May 1. FAMU marks the start time for all three as TBA and does not name a venue for any of them, so this page states neither. Spring lands on the same weekend Florida State's own commencement has historically fallen on. This project's Florida State research already found a Tallahassee hotel manager telling local reporters "we're sold out already for pretty much all of next week" ahead of that shared weekend, with nearly 80% of all Tallahassee hotel rooms booked ten days out. Book the moment your college confirms its exact ceremony time.University of FloridaFlorida runs two rounds and the near one is December 2026: doctoral at 2:00 p.m. on Friday 11 December, a bachelor and master ceremony at 7:00 p.m. the same evening, then three more on Saturday 12 December at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., split by college. Spring 2027 is longer than a weekend. College recognition ceremonies run Wednesday 28 April to Monday 3 May, with the university-wide ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on Friday 30 April. Which college you belong to decides your night, so confirm the ceremony before booking the room.Florida State UniversityFSU and FAMU both hold Fall commencement on Friday 11 December 2026, the same day in the same city, and FSU runs three ceremonies at the Tucker Civic Center across that one date. Tallahassee has one hotel market and two graduating universities pointed at it. Book on the December date rather than waiting for spring 2027, which FSU has not published.North Carolina A&T State UniversityConfirmed directly on NC A&T's own catalog academic calendar. The next round is Friday 11 December 2026, The Graduate College Commencement, and Saturday 12 December 2026, Commencement; spring repeats the shape on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027. Which night you need depends on the degree, because the Friday is the graduate ceremony. No time or venue is published for either round; First Horizon Coliseum is where NC A&T held May 2026. NC A&T's own GHOE homecoming, a separate fall weekend on the same Greensboro hotel market, has been directly described by a university vice chancellor as selling out partner hotels "within minutes," real evidence of how far multi-generational Aggie family parties travel and book for this university's biggest events. Book Commencement weekend as early as you can.Texas Tech UniversityTexas Tech has published its December round in full, down to the college split. Fall commencement runs Friday 11 December 2026 at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., then Saturday 12 December at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., all at United Supermarkets Arena. Which of the four is yours decides your nights, so confirm that before booking anything. Lubbock is also the one December market on this site that measured a real dip rather than a flat line: 81 bookable properties for the ceremony window against a control median of 95.5, about 85 per cent remaining. Spring and late summer 2027 are both published now, and both carry a wrinkle: Texas Tech's two own calendars disagree by a day at the front of each round, so spring is either 13 to 15 May or 14 to 15 May, and late summer either 6 to 7 August or 7 August alone. No venue is published for either 2027 round.University of North Carolina at Chapel HillBook about a year out. Maria Jacavino, director of sales at Graduate by Hilton Chapel Hill, told the Daily Tar Heel that busy weekends like graduation "often need to be booked at least a year in advance", and one local rental manager said some vacation-rental houses need two years' notice for graduation.Pennsylvania State UniversityImmediately, and for December 2026 that is not a figure of speech. Penn State's next round is Sunday 20 December 2026, and the university moved it there because of "the potential conflict with a large-scale event, the NCAA College Football Playoff, on the University Park campus that same weekend". A playoff game and a commencement land on State College in the same few days. Penn State's own release tells attendees to book their accommodations as soon as possible, and on this campus that advice is not boilerplate. Spring 2027 then runs Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 May across sixteen ceremonies in four buildings, with several running at the same hour in different venues, so find your college's ceremony before you book anything.

How GraduationStay works

1. Verify against primary sources

Every rate, deadline and venue comes from the university registrar or the hotel's own policy page. Never a forum post or a guess.

2. Map the epicenter and the ring

We publish the sold-out epicenter's actual rules, then the nearest towns with real availability. That is the option nobody else maps.

3. Date everything, re-verify every year

Every page carries a "last verified" stamp. Facts we can't confirm are omitted, not guessed.

Tell us your university and we will watch it for you

We have verified 158 campuses so far. Name any university, covered or not, and we will email you once, when its booking window opens or when we publish its guide.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a hotel site or a travel blog?

Every rate, deadline, and venue is checked against the university's own registrar or the hotel's own policy page. Never a forum post, a guess, or an AI-generated summary. A hotel site can't honestly send you to a rival or a rental once it's full; we can, because we're not selling rooms ourselves.

Why do these campuses sell out so far in advance?

Most of the campuses here sit in small, isolated towns where the hotel inventory simply can't absorb a graduating class plus its families in one weekend. Epicenter hotels respond with 2-night minimums, full prepayment, and forfeit deadlines months out, while a ring of towns 20 to 70 minutes away keeps normal availability the whole time.

How do you make money, and does it change what you recommend?

We earn a commission through Stay22 when you book via the maps on this site, at no extra cost to you. Because many epicenter hotels book direct, by phone, mail-in form or lottery, outside the OTA system, that commission is often earned on ring-town and rental bookings, not the sold-out epicenter itself. It never changes what we tell you to book. See the full disclosure on the About page.

What happens if a hotel I want is already sold out?

Every campus has a dedicated "sold out, now what" page mapping the ring towns with real, currently-checked availability, plus the deposit-forfeit window where rooms predictably reappear 30-120 days before the ceremony. See the graduation cancellation wave guide for how that mechanism works.

Is it called commencement, convocation or graduation?

All three, depending on the university, and they describe the same weekend. American universities usually say commencement for the ceremony and graduation for the day; convocation is the common word in Canada, India and parts of the UK, and some universities use it for a separate ceremony earlier in the year. We index each date under whichever word the university itself publishes, quoted from its registrar, so searching for any of the three finds the same verified weekend and the same rooms.

How often is this information updated?

Every page carries a dated "Last verified" stamp, and we re-check each covered campus at least once a year. Facts we can't independently confirm are left out entirely, not guessed. That applies to hotel rates, ring-town availability and booking-pressure grading alike.
