WGU HAS PUBLISHED NO 2027 COMMENCEMENT DATES. Its Commencement Office announced what it called the final dates and locations for all of 2026, and that list stops at November. Two in-person rounds remain: ATLANTA on SATURDAY 10 OCTOBER 2026 and ANAHEIM on FRIDAY 6 AND SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2026. A third 2026 ceremony, the Fall Virtual on Saturday 12 September, is online and needs no travel, but ITS REGISTRATION HAS ALREADY CLOSED. Before you book anything, know the rule that decides whether you travel at all: a graduate may take part in ONE ceremony per degree, virtual OR in-person. They are alternatives rather than a sequence, so a graduate who takes part in the 12 September virtual ceremony cannot also walk at Atlanta or Anaheim for that same degree, and the Atlanta RSVP closes on 9 September, three days before the virtual ceremony is even held. Neither in-person round is at a campus, because WGU does not have one. The Atlanta ceremony is at Gas South Arena in DULUTH, 22 miles northeast of the city, and the Friday evening celebration is at the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta, 22 miles from the arena. Those are two different lodging decisions in one weekend. Tickets are required in Atlanta and are not required in Anaheim. WGU's host cities change every year, so nothing about 2026 predicts where 2027 will be held.

There are no 2027 dates, and that is the answer
WGU’s Commencement Office announced its 2026 schedule as a finished set, in its own words the final commencement dates and locations for all 2026 commencement weekends. That list ends in November. No 2027 date and no 2027 city appears anywhere on WGU’s commencement pages.
That matters more here than it would at a state university, because WGU changes cities every year. Its 2025 series ran through Dallas, Las Vegas, Louisville, Seattle, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta. Its 2026 series ran through New Orleans, New York City, Louisville, Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Anaheim. Two cities repeat, five do not. Nothing on the 2026 list tells you where 2027 will be held, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
What you can do is watch for the whole list at once. WGU published 2026 as a single announcement rather than city by city, so the 2027 series should appear the same way.
What is actually published for 2026
| When | Round | Where | Can you still take part? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday 12 September 2026, 3:00 p.m. EDT | Fall Virtual | Online, no travel | No, registration closed. Anyone can watch |
| Saturday 10 October 2026 | Atlanta | Gas South Arena, Duluth, Georgia | RSVP closes 9 September |
| Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November 2026 | Anaheim | Angel Stadium, Anaheim, California | RSVP closes 7 October |
Minneapolis, on 21 and 22 August, has already been held. Ceremony times are below.
One ceremony per degree, and it is the first thing to settle
This decides whether there is a trip at all, so it belongs above the lodging questions rather than in the small print.
WGU’s policy, which it dates to January 2022, is that a graduate may take part in one ceremony per degree program completed, either virtual or in-person. They are alternatives, not a sequence. A graduate who takes part in the Fall Virtual on 12 September has used their entitlement for that degree and cannot also walk at Atlanta in October.
The word WGU uses is participate, not register, so if someone is signed up for the virtual round and would rather travel, that is a question for the Commencement Office rather than something this page can answer. What it can point out is the timing, because the two deadlines run in an awkward order: the Atlanta RSVP closes on 9 September, three days before the 12 September virtual ceremony is held. Anyone weighing one against the other has to choose before the virtual one happens.
Two things soften that, and both are worth knowing before anyone concludes they have missed out:
- There is no time limit on when you walk. WGU says so plainly. A degree completed some time ago can still be celebrated at a later round, which is why families sometimes travel for a graduate who finished a year or more earlier.
- A second WGU degree is a separate entitlement. Someone who did a virtual ceremony for a bachelor’s can attend in person for a master’s.
The Fall Virtual round, and why it is already shut
The Fall Virtual commencement is on Saturday 12 September 2026 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, which is 2:00 p.m. CDT, 1:00 p.m. MDT and 12:00 p.m. PDT. It streams on WGU’s page and on its YouTube channel, live or afterwards, and once the livestream ends it is cut into segments so you can go straight to the reading of names.
Watching is open to anyone. Taking part is closed. WGU lists all four Fall Virtual deadlines as closed: the RSVP, the cap and gown order, the graduate speaker application and the video clip submission.
Taking part in a WGU virtual ceremony is more involved than turning up to a stream. A registered graduate submits a video clip, on instructions that go out from eight weeks before and close four weeks before, and WGU says late videos are not accepted because of the production schedule. Names are read alphabetically, unlike the in-person ceremonies where graduates are called by school. Regalia is encouraged but not required, and business professional attire is explicitly acceptable. Anyone who submits a video is mailed a complimentary diploma cover about three weeks afterwards.
WGU does not publish the date virtual registration closes. The sentence on its own FAQ that would tell you breaks off mid-clause, reading “registration for virtual ceremonies ends” and then stopping. If you are planning around a future virtual round, treat that as unstated rather than assuming it matches the one-month rule the in-person ceremonies follow.
The Atlanta weekend happens in two cities
This is the detail most likely to cost somebody money, and it is not flagged anywhere in WGU’s own materials.
The round is called Atlanta. The ceremony is not in Atlanta. It is at Gas South Arena, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, in Duluth, out in Gwinnett County. The Friday evening Alumni Celebration is at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree Street NE, in Midtown Atlanta.
Those two addresses are 22 miles apart, computed from the coordinates WGU’s own published addresses resolve to, with the top end of I-85 in between.
So the weekend runs: Friday 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in Midtown, then graduate check-in at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, 22 miles away. A family that books a Midtown hotel because the event is called Atlanta will be driving that on Saturday morning. A family that books beside the arena will be driving it on Friday night instead. There is no address that is close to both, and which one you choose should depend on which event you actually care about.
Our WGU where-to-stay page works through both sides of that, with the areas ordered by distance.
Ceremony times, and which one you are in
For 2026 WGU stopped assigning graduates to a ceremony by school. Every school takes part in every ceremony, and the graduate picks the time on the RSVP form, subject to that ceremony not being full.
Atlanta, Saturday 10 October, Gas South Arena
| Ceremony | Graduate check-in | Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | 8:30 a.m. | 9:30 a.m. |
| Afternoon | 12:30 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. |
Anaheim, Angel Stadium
| Ceremony | Graduate check-in | Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 6 November, afternoon | 2:00 p.m. | 3:00 p.m. |
| Saturday 7 November, morning | 8:30 a.m. | 9:30 a.m. |
| Saturday 7 November, afternoon | 12:30 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. |
Every ceremony is limited to about 90 minutes, which WGU achieves through capacity limits on each one. It says plainly that ceremonies do reach capacity, so the ceremony time you want is not guaranteed to be there when you get round to the form.
One thing to keep watching for Atlanta. WGU’s main commencement page says a Friday afternoon ceremony will be added in Seattle, Atlanta and Anaheim. Anaheim’s page shows one. Atlanta’s page does not, and lists Saturday only. If a Friday ceremony does appear for Atlanta, the night you need moves back by one, so check the Atlanta page again before you book a room.
Tickets are required in Atlanta and not in Anaheim
Same university, same series, four weeks apart, different rule.
WGU states that tickets are required at Gas South Arena in Atlanta, along with UBS Arena in Elmont and Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, and that tickets are not required in Anaheim, New Orleans, Louisville or Minneapolis.
It says event-specific ticketing information arrives eight weeks before the event. For a 10 October ceremony that was mid-August. When this page was checked on 28 August the Atlanta page still carried no ticketing detail, and its guidebook, parking and bag policy sections all read “coming soon”.
Then there is the venue’s own rule, which is stricter than most families expect: Gas South District requires a ticket for any child over 24 months. A three-year-old counts.
Guests: eight at one event, four at the other
WGU recommends up to eight guests at the commencement ceremony. It frames that as a request to keep the venue under capacity rather than as an enforced cap.
The Friday Alumni Celebration is genuinely capped, and the number depends on the city. For Atlanta and Anaheim it is four. For New Orleans, New York, Louisville and Minneapolis it was six.
A party of six can therefore attend the ceremony together and split for Friday night.
What you cannot carry in
Gas South District operates a clear bag policy and its own guidance is blunt: the fastest way in is to bring no bag at all.
Allowed: a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag up to 12 by 12 by 6 inches; a small clutch up to 6.5 by 4.5 inches; medically necessary items and diaper bags.
Not allowed: backpacks, briefcases, ordinary purses, coolers, duffel bags, rolling suitcases, metal water bottles, laptops and tablets, cameras with detachable lenses, video cameras including GoPros, and selfie sticks. Strollers and umbrellas over 24 inches can be checked at Guest Services rather than carried in. Every guest walks through a metal detector, and there is an alternative screening for anyone who cannot.
The camera rule catches people out at graduations specifically. If it does not fit in a pocket, leave it.
Angel Stadium publishes a more generous rule for its own events, allowing a purse or bag up to 12 by 12 inches with a single closure, or a clear bag up to 12.75 by 6.5 by 12.75 inches. WGU has not confirmed what applies at the Anaheim ceremony, so pack to the stricter standard if you want to be certain.
Parking in Atlanta, and the timing that follows from it
Gas South District charges $15 for event parking and $40 for valet, by card or phone only. There is no cash option. Arena guests use Lot A and Deck 2, and rideshare pick-up is in Lot A5.
The part worth doing the arithmetic on: the district says event parking lots typically open about two hours before the event. For a 9:30 a.m. ceremony that is roughly 7:30 a.m., and graduate check-in is 8:30 a.m. That is a one-hour window, on a morning when several thousand people are arriving at once, and it is the calculation that makes a room within walking distance worth more than its rate difference. That timing is our arithmetic from the venue’s stated practice, not a schedule WGU has published.
Anaheim is outdoors, in November
Angel Stadium is an open-air baseball park. WGU’s Anaheim page states that the event will go on rain or shine.
The Friday ceremony starts at 3:00 p.m. and the Saturday morning ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Guests are sitting outside for about 90 minutes in either case. Graduates are asked to arrive already dressed in cap and gown, because WGU says there is no practical way to change at the venue, so whatever you are wearing under the gown is what you are wearing.
Deadlines, in the order they expire
| Date | What closes |
|---|---|
| Sunday 6 September 2026 | Atlanta cap and gown ordering |
| Tuesday 8 September 2026 | Atlanta hotel block, Aloft Lawrenceville Sugarloaf |
| Wednesday 9 September 2026 | Atlanta ceremony RSVP |
| Thursday 17 September 2026 | Atlanta hotel block, Courtyard Duluth/Gwinnett Place |
| Monday 21 September 2026 | Atlanta hotel block, City Express Duluth |
| Sunday 4 October 2026 | Anaheim cap and gown ordering |
| Wednesday 7 October 2026 | Anaheim ceremony RSVP |
Anaheim has no published hotel block, so it has no lodging deadline.
What we checked
WGU’s commencement pages, its Atlanta, Anaheim and Fall Virtual event pages and its previous-commencements archive were read at source on 28 August 2026, direct rather than through a proxy, which returns a challenge page instead. The weekday of every date above was verified independently. Gas South District’s security, parking and hotel pages were read the same day, and Angel Stadium’s published policies alongside them.
Not published, and each a real absence rather than something we could not find: any 2027 date or city; the Atlanta parking arrangements and bag policy on WGU’s own page, both of which still read “coming soon”; the Atlanta ticketing detail that was due eight weeks out; the Atlanta commencement guidebook and ceremony programme; the Anaheim parking information, listed as TBA; and any hotel block for Anaheim.
Two things on WGU’s own pages we could not resolve, left visible rather than tidied away. Its main commencement page announces a Friday afternoon ceremony for Atlanta, and the Atlanta event page does not list one. And the FAQ sentence that would give the closing date for virtual registration breaks off mid-clause, so that date is genuinely unstated rather than something we failed to find.

Frequently asked questions
When is WGU graduation 2027?
Not published. WGU's Commencement Office announced the 2026 dates as a complete set, described as the final dates and locations for all 2026 commencement weekends, and no 2027 date or city appears anywhere on its commencement pages as at 28 August 2026. This page will not guess one. WGU changes host cities from year to year, so the 2026 list is not a guide to 2027: the 2025 series ran through Dallas, Las Vegas, Louisville, Seattle, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta, and the 2026 series through New Orleans, New York City, Louisville, Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Anaheim.
Can I go to the virtual ceremony and an in-person one?
No, and this is the rule that decides whether your family travels. WGU states that a graduate may participate in one ceremony per degree program completed, either virtual or in-person, a policy it dates to January 2022. So a graduate who has already been through a virtual commencement for that degree cannot also walk at Atlanta or Anaheim. A second WGU degree is a separate entitlement, and there is no time limit on when you walk, so a degree finished years ago can still be celebrated at a later round.
What time is the Fall Virtual commencement, and can I still join it?
Saturday 12 September 2026 at 3:00 p.m. EDT, which is 2:00 p.m. CDT, 1:00 p.m. MDT and 12:00 p.m. PDT, streamed on this page and on WGU's YouTube channel. You can watch it live or afterwards, and after the livestream it is broken into segments so you can skip to the reading of names. But you cannot take part now: WGU lists every Fall Virtual deadline as closed, the RSVP, the cap and gown ordering, the graduate speaker application and the video clip submission. Taking part means registering in advance and submitting a video clip, on instructions that go out from eight weeks before and close four weeks before, and WGU says late videos are not accepted. Watching is open to anyone.
Where is WGU's commencement held?
In a rented arena in a different city several times a year. WGU teaches entirely online and holds no ceremony at its Salt Lake City headquarters, so there is no campus to travel to. The two rounds left in 2026 are at Gas South Arena, 6400 Sugarloaf Pkwy, Duluth, Georgia, and at Angel Stadium, 2000 E Gene Autry Way, Anaheim, California.
Do I need a ticket?
It depends which round you are attending, which is unusual and easy to get wrong. WGU states that tickets ARE required at Gas South Arena in Atlanta, and are NOT required in Anaheim. It says event-specific ticketing information is provided eight weeks before the event. For the 10 October Atlanta round that point passed in mid-August and the ticketing detail had still not appeared when this page was checked on 28 August, so watch for it rather than assume it is settled.
How many guests can I bring?
Two different numbers on the same weekend. WGU recommends up to eight guests at the commencement ceremony itself, framed as a request to keep the venue under capacity rather than a hard cap. The Friday evening Alumni Celebration is capped, and for Atlanta and Anaheim the cap is four. A party of six can therefore all attend the ceremony while only four attend the celebration.
What can I carry into the ceremony?
In Atlanta, very little. Gas South District runs a clear bag policy and prohibits backpacks, briefcases and ordinary purses outright. What is allowed is a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag up to 12 by 12 by 6 inches, a small clutch up to 6.5 by 4.5 inches, and medically necessary items or a diaper bag. Strollers and umbrellas over 24 inches must be checked at Guest Services, cameras with detachable lenses are prohibited, and every guest passes through a metal detector. Angel Stadium publishes a more generous rule for its own events, allowing a purse or bag up to 12 by 12 inches with a single closure, but WGU has not confirmed what will apply at the Anaheim ceremony.
Is the ceremony indoors?
In Atlanta yes, in Anaheim no. Gas South Arena is an indoor arena. Angel Stadium is an open-air baseball park, and WGU's own Anaheim page states that the event will go on rain or shine. The Friday ceremony there starts at 3:00 p.m. and the Saturday morning ceremony at 9:30 a.m., in November, so dress for sitting outside for about 90 minutes.
What is the deadline to register?
Wednesday 9 September 2026 for Atlanta and Wednesday 7 October 2026 for Anaheim. WGU says registration for every in-person ceremony closes one month before the event and that no late additions are permitted, including walk-ups on the day. Cap and gown ordering closes earlier still, on 6 September for Atlanta and 4 October for Anaheim, a sequence WGU flags itself because the regalia deadline lands before the RSVP one.
Can a toddler attend without a ticket?
Not in Atlanta, on the venue's rule. Gas South District states that children over the age of 24 months require a ticket unless an event says otherwise, and WGU has confirmed that tickets are required at this venue. Count anyone over two as a guest when you plan.
