This distinction matters more here than almost anywhere on the site, and the cluster previously blurred it.
East Lansing was measured across five matched windows for each round, in one session on 12 August 2026.
December, three-night windows around the 18 and 19 December ceremonies: 66, 75, 74, 74, 67. Completely flat.
May, four-night windows around the 6 to 9 May ceremonies: 66, 64, 40, 66, 67. A fall of about 39%, which still leaves forty properties.
Neither round empties East Lansing, and Lansing adds roughly 55 more fifteen minutes away.
What is genuinely managed is the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, the hotel on campus, which suspends its discount rates during commencement weekend and books graduation rooms by phone under a promo code rather than through its public site. That is a real signal, and it is a signal about one property rather than about the region.
Read it that way: you are very unlikely to be shut out of East Lansing. You may well be shut out of the hotel you can walk to.
The on-campus hotel does not sell out, it changes how it sells
Michigan State’s Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center sits directly on campus, and its own alumni page is explicit about commencement weekend: the hotel’s usual discounted rates, including its Big Ten member rate, are not available during graduation. Instead, families book by phone and mention the promo code GRADUATION to get whatever rate applies for the ceremony dates they need. That’s a real, sourced signal of managed demand, even without Kellogg ever using the words “sold out.”
The second option, a short walk away
Graduate by Hilton East Lansing sits directly across the street from campus. We haven’t found a published commencement-specific rate or minimum-stay policy for it, the hotel’s own site and MSU’s Human Resources discount page don’t mention graduation terms specifically. The general advice from the Lansing tourism board applies here the same way it would for a home football weekend or move-in day: book as early as you can, because rooms do fill for major campus events.
Cancellation terms, where they exist
Kellogg’s standard policy is a firm 48-hour window: cancel by 48 hours before your arrival date and it’s free; cancel inside that window and you’re charged one night’s room rate plus tax. We haven’t found a published cancellation policy specific to the Graduate by Hilton beyond its general reservation terms.

The honest version of MSU’s ring is that, unlike most campuses in this project, it is really just Lansing itself, a full state-capital city bordering East Lansing directly. The ring table above sets out the measured figures.
