Houghton and Hancock together hold a handful of hotels, and they are one market rather than two: Hancock sits minutes across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and shares Houghton's demand instead of escaping it. Past that pair there is essentially nothing until Marquette, about 100 minutes southeast, which is the only genuinely deeper hotel base within reach of the Keweenaw. The market is small, but commencement is not why
Houghton was measured across five matched two-night windows in one session on 12 August 2026:

Read the whole column rather than the highlighted row. Availability keeps falling after the ceremony, into January, which is a Keweenaw winter closing the market rather than graduates filling it.
So the urgency here is real but it is not the usual kind. Twenty properties is a very small base at any time of year, and it gets smaller as winter deepens.
Hancock is five minutes over the lift bridge and Calumet twenty minutes north, and neither is a genuine addition: their counts overlap the same small Keweenaw market rather than adding to it, so do not add the three numbers together and conclude you have sixty options. Marquette at around 27 properties is the nearest genuinely separate market, and it is one hundred minutes away on winter roads.
Book early because there is very little here, not because a graduation is about to take it.
Two towns, one market
The figure above sorts by drive time, and the first thing it shows is a gap rather than a ladder.
Most clusters on this site offer something graded: a town at twenty minutes, another at forty, a city at an hour. The Keweenaw does not work that way. Houghton and Hancock face each other across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, minutes apart, and between them they hold a small cluster of properties: the Country Inn & Suites, the Hampton Inn & Suites, the independent Magnuson Copper Crown, and a few others.
Book Hancock if it has the room you want. Do not book it as a hedge. Two towns that share a bridge share a weekend, and if Houghton has gone for 19 December then Hancock has very probably gone with it.
Past that pair, the next real hotel base is Marquette, about 100 minutes southeast.
No sellout quote, and we are not going to manufacture one
We did not find a named Houghton property confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend. That absence is stated rather than smoothed over, because the case here does not need it.
A graduating class arrives with parents, grandparents and siblings on a single Saturday, into a town whose entire hotel inventory can be listed in a sentence. You do not need an occupancy statistic to see how that resolves.
There is one complication and it genuinely cuts the other way. Visit Keweenaw describes the area’s peak visitor season as July through September, with October to December quieter. A December ceremony therefore lands in a softer market than a July one would. What softens is the competing demand. What does not soften is the room count or the drive.
Two towns we left off rather than guess at
Calumet, about twenty minutes north, and L’Anse, to the south, are both genuine communities inside a reasonable radius. Neither appears anywhere on this cluster.
Every coordinate on this site is checked against our mapping tool before it is written into content, and both of these failed repeatedly. Listing a place we cannot verify would make the ring look deeper than it is, which is the one thing a page like this must not do. If you are searching manually they are still worth a look. We simply cannot put them on the map for you.
A hundred minutes is a different number in December
Marquette is the answer if the Keweenaw is full, and it is worth pricing honestly before you take it.
A hundred minutes is an easy drive in June. In the third week of December, on Upper Peninsula roads, in a region averaging roughly 180 inches of snow a year, it is a different proposition. The ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m., which means a Marquette family driving in that morning leaves in the dark on roads that may have had weather overnight.
If Marquette is where your room is, come the evening before. And treat the return leg as the part of the trip most likely to go wrong, because it is the one nobody plans for.
What we checked, and what we could not
The date, time and venue come from Michigan Tech’s own midyear commencement page, read on 8 August 2026, with the weekday cross-checked against the calendar: 19 December 2026 is a Saturday.
What we could not establish: a live per-night availability count for Houghton, Hancock or Marquette, because the method used for most other clusters here would not complete; any commencement-specific rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy at a named property on the peninsula, because none publishes one; and workable coordinates for Calumet or L’Anse. Those are absent rather than estimated.

What is the real fallback?
Marquette, about 100 minutes southeast. It is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula, with its own university and regional traffic, and a hotel base meaningfully deeper than anything on the peninsula.
Why aren't Calumet and L'Anse listed?
Both are real towns inside a sensible radius, and both failed to resolve on the mapping tool we check every coordinate against before publishing it.
