The weekend you can still book, and the room you cannot
Family weekend is the softest of the big autumn weekends for a town as a whole. It is the hardest for the one hotel on campus. Those two facts pull in opposite directions, and which one matters depends entirely on where you are willing to sleep.
What a family weekend does to the rooms available
We counted bookable properties across five matched weekends in the same town in one session, with the family weekend in the middle and ordinary weekends either side. It is the same method we use for commencement and homecoming, so all three are directly comparable.
The answer at Duke was that Durham barely moved. It was the thinnest of the five weekends, but by a margin you could book around rather than one that shuts you out.

That is one campus measured so far and we present it as exactly that. Family weekend also concentrates harder than homecoming does. Late October alone holds six of the 10 weekends we have verified, which matters if you are choosing between two universities in the same region, or if one of them runs homecoming on a weekend nearby.
The kickoff decides how many nights, not the weekend
Most family weekends are built around a home football game, and the day that game is played is the single fact that changes a booking. A Thursday or Friday evening kickoff means arriving a day before most people would. A Saturday afternoon game means few families will want to drive home afterwards.
Every fixture below comes from the university's own athletics or family programs page. Television sets kickoff times a few weeks ahead, so three of the six are still unpublished. Book the room now and the travel later.

Two of these start before Saturday, and those are the cases worth catching early: an evening game the night before the weekend proper adds a night to the booking rather than moving it.
Family weekend hotels near campus, and where to look when they are gone
The pattern across these towns is consistent. City-wide there are rooms; within walking distance of the quad there are not, and the campus hotel is often the one property with rules attached. The JB Duke Hotel states that it runs a lottery for family weekend and commencement reservations rather than taking them in the order they arrive, which is not something you want to discover in September.

Family weekend, parents weekend and homecoming
These are three different weekends and it is worth keeping them apart before you book. Family weekend, which some universities still call parents weekend and many now call parent and family weekend, is for the families of current students and usually sits in October. Homecoming is for alumni, is tied to a football fixture, and is a separate date. Commencement is in spring. They compete for the same small pool of rooms in the same small towns, so we give each one its own page with its own verified date rather than treating them as one autumn event.

When is family weekend?
There is no shared date. Every university picks its own, and across the 10 campuses we have verified they run from late September to early November, with six of the 10 in late October alone. Most are built around a home football game, so the weekend moves with the schedule. We take each date from the university's own family programs or athletics page and record the day we read it.
Is family weekend hard to book?
Less hard than the other big weekends, which is the useful thing to know. At Duke we counted bookable properties in Durham across five matched weekends and found roughly 84% of a normal weekend still available for family weekend. Compare that with about 46% for the median spring commencement and 40% for the one homecoming we have measured. The catch is the room you probably want: the campus hotel is the first to go, and the JB Duke Hotel states that it allocates family weekend and commencement reservations by lottery rather than in the order they arrive. City-wide supply is fine, campus-adjacent supply is not.
Do I need two nights or three?
It depends on the kickoff, not the weekend. Of the fixtures our roster universities have published, two start before Saturday, and an evening kickoff on a Thursday or Friday means arriving the day before most people would. Appalachian State is the clearest case: a 7 p.m. Thursday game in Boone finishes late on a mountain road, so families travelling in stay that night and the weekend becomes three. A Saturday afternoon game usually means two nights, because few people want to drive home after it.
What is the difference between family weekend and parents weekend?
Mostly the name. Universities have moved toward "family weekend" and "parent and family weekend" over "parents weekend", and all 10 on our roster use a family wording. It is a different event from homecoming, which is for alumni and usually sits on its own weekend, and different again from commencement. We keep a separate page and a separately verified date for each rather than folding them together.
