UMass Amherst had not yet published exact 2027 commencement dates as of this check; confirm the date directly on UMass's own commencement page before booking. Hotel UMass, on campus, is the closest option, but the university's own overflow dorm program has reached capacity before commencement weekend in past years, and a regional tourism official says there's "not a room to be found in the region" during this stretch, or use Northampton, 20 minutes away, at normal rates.

The 2027 dates, and the ceremony a week early
UMass Amherst’s own commencement page hadn’t listed 2027 dates as of this check. Check directly at umass.edu/commencement as the university finalizes the year’s calendar. For reference, the 156th Commencement ran May 15-17, 2026, with the main Undergraduate Commencement Friday, May 15 at 5 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium, for over 9,300 graduates.
The closest option, and its limits
Hotel UMass, roughly 112 rooms at 1 Campus Center Way and literally on campus, is the closest hotel to the ceremony venues. No commencement-specific minimum-stay or cancellation policy was independently confirmed, so book direct and ask early.
UMass also runs its own Commencement Residence Hall Lodging program: $135 per room per night, online-only, full payment required at booking, and non-refundable regardless of reason. It has reached capacity ahead of commencement weekend in past years, which is a real signal of how tight the weekend runs rather than a guaranteed backup plan.
Why this particular weekend runs so tight
Amherst sits in the Pioneer Valley alongside four other colleges. Mary Kay Wydra, president of Explore Western Mass, told New England Public Media that during the region’s stacked college commencement season, “there’s not a room to be found in the region.”

Availability was checked live via Google Hotels for a representative weekend in July 2026 (not necessarily the actual 2027 commencement dates, which weren't published yet); the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so this reports confirmed inventory rather than a dollar comparison.
