Where to Stay for LSU Graduation Weekend

The next ceremony is closer than you think

LSU’s next commencement is Friday 14 August 2026, the summer round, with the Main Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The fall round follows on Thursday 17 December 2026, and spring 2027 runs Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May, which LSU’s registrar describes as being held over a two-day period. The registrar lists 13 August 2027 after that.

Four rounds inside twelve months is the thing to plan around at LSU. A family booking “graduation” here needs to know which one they are booking for, because the answer is not automatically May.

129 rooms, and a week that stacks

The Cook Hotel and Conference Center sits on University Lake at 3848 W. Lakeshore Dr and is the only hotel genuinely on LSU’s campus. It has 129 guest rooms.

That number matters less on its own than in combination with something LSU publishes itself. The Law School’s commencement page tells guests: “Graduates and guests are encouraged to make room reservations early. Other colleges of LSU will also be holding ceremonies this same week, so please plan accordingly.”

That is the university telling you the demand is not one graduating class competing for those 129 rooms. It is several, in the same days, in a city whose hotel market is already worked hard by football and baseball seasons.

The 9 a.m. start is the real argument for staying close

Look at the morning LSU publishes for the August ceremony rather than at the rate card.

Graduate check-in opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 8:30 a.m., half an hour before the 9:00 a.m. ceremony, with doctoral candidates checking in at the northern entrance to the Assembly Center and bachelor’s and master’s candidates split by senior college at the southwest portal. Guests get doors roughly an hour before the start.

A graduate who misses 8:30 does not walk. That is a hard cutoff, published by the university, and it converts an hour of driving into a genuine risk rather than an inconvenience. Hammond is about an hour out and New Orleans about eighty minutes, which makes either a reasonable place to sleep and a poor place to start a ceremony morning.

Hammond is the nearer fallback, a real Louisiana city about an hour east rather than a strip of motels serving Baton Rouge. New Orleans is roughly eighty minutes southeast and is the deeper market by a wide margin, with a hotel economy driven by its own convention and tourism calendar rather than by anything LSU does.

Those checks were run against a representative May 2027 commencement window, and the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so inventory depth and hotel tier are what we can stand behind rather than a converted dollar figure.

What we could not establish

No commencement-specific minimum stay, deposit or cancellation policy at The Cook Hotel, and no published room block for any Baton Rouge property.

The per-college schedule for either the December 2026 or the May 2027 rounds. LSU splits its ceremonies across several venues by college, and until that schedule is posted, the day your graduate actually walks inside a multi-day round is not knowable from any central page.

One deliberate omission worth naming: LSU’s own fall ceremonies page was still displaying the December 2025 schedule when we checked, so nothing on this page takes its per-college times or venues from it. The December 2026 date here comes from LSU’s events calendar and its registrar calendar instead.
