Two things matter more. The round runs across the week, with School and College events on the Tuesday and Wednesday, so most families need several nights. And Harvard is not the only university graduating in Cambridge that week.
MIT is the reason to book early
MIT’s 2027 ceremonies run 26 to 28 May. Harvard’s Thursday sits inside that window.
Harvard Square and Kendall Square are two miles apart and four stops on the Red Line. During that week they are not separate markets: Cambridge is absorbing Harvard families and MIT families at once, in a city with a small hotel stock relative to either institution’s draw.
That is the whole argument for booking this cluster earlier than the date alone would suggest. The scarcity is not created by Harvard; it is created by the overlap.
Where the rings actually help
Harvard Square is the walkable option and the first to go.
The Red Line is the practical fallback, and it is a good one: Central, Porter and Davis are all short rides, and Boston proper is reachable in under half an hour. The exception is Kendall, which looks ideal on a map and is exactly where MIT families are booking that same week.

Boston University does not compete
BU graduates on Sunday 16 May 2027, eleven days earlier, across the river along Commonwealth Avenue.
Boston has two graduation waves and they do not overlap. A family here for BU is not bidding against Harvard and MIT, and the reverse holds too.

Harvard’s Commencement Office schedule was read on 19 August 2026 for the 2027 date, and MIT’s commencement site the same day for the 26 to 28 May range. Weekdays were verified independently.
