Where to Stay for Virginia Tech Graduation Weekend

Virginia Tech has published both rounds, and the nearer one is in December. A May 2026 schedule still circulates as a reference; that round has already been held.

Fall commencement is Friday 18 December 2026, in Cassell Coliseum, indoors. University commencement is Friday 14 May 2027, in Lane Stadium, outdoors.

What is still missing is the part that decides your nights in May: no start time for the Lane Stadium round, and no individual college ceremony schedule. December’s times are out: 10:30 a.m. for the University Commencement and 3 p.m. for the Graduate School, both in Cassell Coliseum. Virginia Tech runs college ceremonies alongside the university-wide one and says to check back for their details.

That is an awkward combination in this particular town. You are being asked to commit to a room in a market with a documented sell-out and a documented overbooking case, before the university has told you which day or hour is yours. The workable answer is to hold refundable nights across the likely span now and release what you do not need once the college schedule appears. Waiting for certainty is how families end up in Roanoke.

Virginia Tech’s own housing sold out

The university’s Conference and Guest Services office runs Commencement Housing: air-conditioned residence hall rooms for visiting families. For the 2026 cycle, it cost a flat $450 for the full weekend (May 14, 7 p.m. through May 17, noon), including two $100 dining cards. As of this check, the program had already sold out: “Due to an overwhelming response, 2026 Commencement Housing accommodations are fully booked,” with only a waitlist remaining.

A documented overbooking case, not a hypothetical

Local news station WDBJ7 reported that nearly 30 families had booked and prepaid a full year in advance at the Clay Corner Inn, a Blacksburg bed-and-breakfast, only to be told days before check-in that the inn had sold the exact same rooms to a dozen other families. One affected parent told the station it cost her “thousands of dollars” to sort out. The same pattern had reportedly happened around Homecoming the year before. This is real, documented evidence of how tight, and how risky, last-minute bookings can get in Blacksburg.

If Blacksburg itself is full

One booking note specific to this cluster, given what happened at the Clay Corner Inn: prefer properties where the cancellation terms are yours rather than the host’s, and keep the confirmation. The families in that case had paid a year ahead and still lost their rooms. A chain property in Christiansburg with free cancellation is a worse room and a better position than a prepaid one you cannot enforce.
