Seven properties, and that is the ceiling

This is the thinnest market on this site, and the number is worse than the usual framing suggests.

And here is why that reads worse rather than better: the check was run nine months ahead. Almost nothing had been booked. These are not the leftovers, they are the whole market. It only shrinks from here.

Set that against what arrives. Binghamton confers nearly 3,700 degrees across the weekend and draws more than 22,000 guests, with the university estimating $2.1 million spent locally. Local news reported of a recent graduation weekend that “hotel rooms are sold out and restaurants packed all along the Vestal Parkway and in off-campus student housing areas.”

Binghamton says the quiet part itself. Its own Family Weekend page, for a much smaller event, tells families: “You’ll want to book your hotel reservations as soon as possible, they fill up fast!”

Book for your day, not for the weekend

The instinct with a three-day span is to book “graduation weekend”. That is the wrong shape here and it will cost you a night at one end or the other.

Binghamton runs nine ceremonies across three days, split by school. Yours is one of them.

• Pharmacy and Doctoral Hooding, Thursday morning: you need Wednesday night.
• Decker, Thursday 4:30 p.m.: Thursday night, and possibly Wednesday.
• Watson, CCPA, School of Management, Friday: you need Thursday night.
• Harpur College, all three ceremonies Saturday: you need Friday night.

The 8:30 a.m. ceremonies, Watson on Friday and Harpur Ceremony 1 on Saturday, have doors at 7:45 a.m. There is no version of that reachable from Ithaca or Scranton on the morning. Full schedule on the logistics page.

Book before you know your ticket count

Normally the advice is to establish your guest number and then book rooms to match. Binghamton makes that impossible, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

Binghamton has no fixed ticket allowance. The allotment “completely depends on the number of graduates who sign up for that ceremony and space available in the venue”, and it is not posted until March 2027. Extra-ticket requests are answered by the end of April 2027, roughly two weeks before the ceremony.

The hotels will be long gone by March.

So the order has to invert: book refundable rooms for everyone who wants to come, then release what you do not need. Holding a room you might cancel costs nothing but attention. Finding a room in Vestal in April costs a 75-minute drive, if it is available at all.

The ring is far, and one half of it is busy for its own reasons

There is no twenty-minute overflow town here, which is precisely why the local corridor sells out instead of spilling over.

Ithaca, 65 minutes, is the deepest fallback at 24 properties. It is also not clean: Ithaca runs its own graduation season for Cornell and Ithaca College in the same general weeks, so it can be full for reasons that have nothing to do with Binghamton.

Scranton, 75 minutes, is smaller at 16 properties but sits outside the upstate New York graduation season entirely. Ten more minutes of driving buys predictability, and on this cluster that is worth more than depth.

The week collides with itself

One structural detail that explains the sellouts. Binghamton’s own academic calendar puts final examinations through Thursday 13 May, Senior Days on Thursday and Friday, and residence halls closing on Friday 14 May, in the middle of the ceremony span.

So Friday has ceremony families arriving while the entire residential population moves out. That is not a one-off collision like the ones documented at other campuses on this site. It is built into the calendar every year.

What is not established

No named Binghamton or Vestal hotel was confirmed sold out for the 2027 window; the property counts are total bookable supply on the date checked. No commencement-specific minimum stay or cancellation policy was confirmed at any property, which matters because this page recommends booking refundable rooms and you should verify that per property rather than assume it.

The 81-room figure for the Holiday Inn Express and Suites comes from Visit Binghamton’s listing. Rates for the commencement window were not recorded, since a rate captured nine months out says little.
