A hundred and thirty-four rooms, eight hundred graduates

Hamilton is a village in central New York, and the numbers here do not need any help from adjectives.

The Colgate Inn has 40 rooms. Hotel One75 has 94. That is about 134 rooms in the village, against a graduating class of roughly 800 students, before anyone’s parents, siblings or grandparents are counted.

There is no reading of those figures on which Hamilton accommodates a Colgate commencement. The question was never whether families would have to leave the village; it is only which direction they go.

The university’s own rationing is the evidence

Most clusters on this site rely on hotels or local news to demonstrate scarcity. Colgate demonstrates its own.

Its campus guest lodging page caps bookings at one suite per graduate, offered first-come, first-served, with a hard reservation deadline.

Read what that implies. A university with comfortable local supply does not ration its own spare beds by the graduate, and does not need a deadline for them. Colgate is managing a shortage it knows it has, and the cap is a more honest signal of pressure than any occupancy statistic.

Practically, first-come-first-served with a cap means the queue is the entire contest. Find the deadline as soon as your graduate’s plans are settled.

Utica, then Syracuse

The figure above sorts by drive time, and Colgate’s ring is better than the village’s size suggests.

Utica is about 30 minutes away, a real city with its own hotel market. Syracuse is about 50 minutes, larger again, with a market driven by a university of its own, an airport and regional business travel that pays no attention to Colgate’s calendar.

For most families one of those two is the answer rather than the fallback. The village’s 134 rooms will be gone to the people who booked earliest or who secured campus lodging, and everyone else is making a half-hour drive on a Sunday morning.

Live availability counts are missing for both because the research tool’s results pages repeatedly failed to load. That is a gap in our data rather than a finding about either market.

Two and a half hours outdoors, in central New York, in the middle of May

Worth planning for rather than discovering.

Colgate holds commencement outdoors, weather permitting, and its own material puts the ceremony at about two and a half hours. Mid-May in central New York is not reliably warm, and two and a half hours seated outdoors in the cold or the wet is a different experience from the same ceremony indoors.

Colgate had not published a 2027 start time or a weather contingency when we checked, so this page does not state either. Bring layers regardless.

What we checked, and what we could not

The 16 May 2027 date comes from Colgate’s own commencement page, which lists it under future dates. We re-read it on 7 August 2026 and cross-checked the weekday against the calendar: 16 May 2027 is a Sunday. That check exists because a date carried forward from a previous year almost always fails it, and it has caught nine wrong dates on this project.

The room counts, the one-suite-per-graduate cap and the outdoor two-and-a-half-hour ceremony all come from Colgate’s own pages.

What we could not establish: the 2027 start time, a weather plan, the campus lodging reservation deadline for 2027, and live availability counts for Utica or Syracuse. Those are absent here rather than estimated.
