WGU has no campus, so "near the university" is not a useful instruction here. The two in-person rounds left in 2026 are at Gas South Arena in DULUTH, GEORGIA on Saturday 10 October, and at Angel Stadium in ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA on 6 and 7 November. For Atlanta the decision is unusually sharp: WGU publishes block rates at three hotels from $99 a night, and none of the three is the closest hotel to the arena. The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett is 632 feet from the door and is not in the block; the cheapest block hotel is 3.2 miles away. The Friday evening celebration is 22 miles from the ceremony, in Midtown Atlanta. The earliest block deadline is Tuesday 8 September 2026. Anaheim publishes no block at all and sits in a resort market driven by Disneyland rather than by WGU.

Which round are you booking?

WGU runs its ceremonies as a travelling series, so the right area depends less on budget than on which round you are attending and, for Atlanta, which of the two events in that weekend you actually care about.

A 2027 ceremonyNot publishedNothing to book yetNeither city is confirmed for 2027: WGU changes hosts yearly

Every date here is WGU's own, read at source on 28 August 2026. The deadlines differ by hotel and by city and are set out in full further down. WGU has published no 2027 dates or cities, so the last row is a genuine blank rather than filled with a guess.

Why WGU is unlike every other university here

Every other campus on this site has one place. A town, a stadium, a ring of hotels around it, and a weekend when the town fills up. The advice writes itself: book early, book close.

WGU has none of that. It teaches entirely online, it has 313,774 twelve-month enrolments, and it holds no ceremony at its Salt Lake City headquarters. Instead it rents a large arena in a different city several times a year. In 2026 that meant seven cities: New Orleans, New York, Louisville, Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Anaheim, plus two virtual ceremonies.

So there is no campus to stay near, and the usual instruction is worse than useless. It sends you to Utah.

Two consequences follow, and they run in opposite directions. Because WGU rents big-city arenas, the hotel market around any given ceremony is deep and no single graduation empties it. But because the student body is scattered across every state, essentially every family travels, which is not true at a residential university where a large share of graduates live locally. Nobody is driving over from across town.

The 22 miles between Friday and Saturday

The October round is called Atlanta. Almost none of it is in Atlanta.

The ceremony is at Gas South Arena, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, in Duluth, out in Gwinnett County. The Alumni Celebration the evening before is at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree Street NE, in Midtown Atlanta.

Those addresses are 22 miles apart, computed from the coordinates the two published addresses resolve to.

The weekend therefore runs from 7:00 p.m. Friday in Midtown to a graduate check-in at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, 22 miles north, with the top end of I-85 in between. No hotel is close to both. What you can do is decide which one you are optimising for, which is what the area guide above is ordered around.

For most families that is the ceremony, so Sugarloaf Parkway wins and Friday becomes a drive. If you are attending the celebration and skipping the Saturday morning, or if your graduate is in the 1:30 p.m. ceremony and you would rather have Friday night properly, Midtown is the better booking.

The block is not the closest hotel

This is the part worth knowing before you take a discounted rate.

WGU publishes three block hotels for Atlanta. The nearest one to the arena is roughly a mile out; the cheapest, the $99 Courtyard at Gwinnett Place, is 3.2 miles away.

Meanwhile the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett is at 6450 Sugarloaf Parkway. The arena is at 6400. They are about 632 feet apart, and the Westin is not in the block. The Holiday Inn Atlanta Gas South Arena at 6310 is about 1,300 feet, and also not in the block.

So the discount and the walk are two different bookings, and you cannot have both. Whether that matters depends entirely on your ceremony time. For the 1:30 p.m. afternoon ceremony, three miles and a $15 car park are a minor inconvenience and the $99 rate is straightforwardly the better deal. For the 9:30 a.m. one, with check-in at 8:30 and the lots opening around 7:30, the calculation is much closer, and the rate difference has to be weighed against arriving on foot with an hour in hand.

We could not establish what the Westin or the Holiday Inn actually charge for that weekend, so this page cannot tell you the size of the gap. It can tell you the gap is a real choice rather than an obvious one.

If you are travelling to Anaheim

The November round is a different problem and a gentler one.

Angel Stadium sits 2.3 miles from Disneyland, inside a resort hotel district built for a theme park. The supply is deep, WGU is not the reason it exists, and one graduation weekend does not empty it. John Wayne Airport is 8.6 miles away, which is unusually convenient; LAX is 32 miles, which is not.

Three things about the ceremony itself change the booking. There are three ceremonies over two days, and the first is Friday at 3:00 p.m., so a graduate in that one needs the Thursday night rather than the Friday. The stadium is open air and WGU says the event goes ahead rain or shine, in November. And graduates are asked to arrive already dressed in cap and gown, because WGU says there is no practical way to change at the venue, which quietly makes your hotel room the place you get ready.

There is no published hotel block for Anaheim, so there is no fixed rate and no stated cancellation terms to fall back on.

What we could not pin down

No room count, rate or minimum stay for any property on this page. WGU’s three Atlanta block rates are its own published figures for the nights of 8 to 10 October 2026 and are not a quote for anything else. Availability in Gwinnett County and in Orange County has not been measured for these weekends, and is described rather than counted.

On WGU’s side, its Atlanta page still lists parking and its bag policy as coming soon, its Anaheim parking information as TBA, and the Atlanta ticketing detail that was due eight weeks before the event had not appeared when this page was checked on 28 August 2026.

There are no 2027 dates or cities to plan around. WGU announced 2026 as a finished set and changes hosts from year to year, so the honest answer to where to stay for a 2027 WGU graduation is that nobody knows yet, including WGU’s own published pages. The ceremony logistics page sets out the full 2026 schedule, the ticket and guest rules, and what you can carry into each venue.

The six areas, closest first

Ordered by distance from Gas South Arena, the October ceremony venue, with Anaheim last because it is a different state and a different month. Every area carries its trade, since an area guide with no downsides is an advertisement. Distances are straight-line miles computed from published street addresses.

“Check rooms” links are partner links (Stay22), and we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

  1. Sugarloaf Parkway, beside the arena

Anyone attending the 9:30 a.m. ceremony who does not want a parking problem

632 feet to 0.8 miles from the arena door

Gas South Arena is at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway. The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett is at 6450, about 632 feet away, and the Holiday Inn Atlanta Gas South Arena is at 6310, about 1,300 feet. The Hampton Inn Lawrenceville Duluth at 6010 is roughly 0.8 miles. All three are on the arena's own street and all three are on the list of nearby hotels the venue itself publishes.

For the morning ceremony this is the booking that removes a variable. Graduate check-in is 8:30 a.m., the arena's own parking lots open about two hours before a 9:30 a.m. start, and event parking is $15 by card only. Staying on Sugarloaf turns all of that into a walk.

The tradeNone of these is in WGU's discounted block, so you are paying whatever the property asks. We could not establish a room count, a commencement rate or a minimum stay for any of them, and the whole strip is a commercial corridor rather than a place with anything to walk to besides the arena.

    Check rooms beside the arena

The walk-in ring around Gas South Arena

Two nights around the Atlanta ceremony, checking in on the Friday of the Alumni Celebration and out on the Sunday. The arena sits at the centre; the Westin and the Holiday Inn are on the same street.

  2. WGU's own hotel block, Gwinnett Place and Lawrenceville

Anyone who wants a fixed rate and a cancellation policy in writing

About 1 to 3.2 miles from the arena

WGU publishes three block hotels for the Atlanta round, each with its own rate, its own closing date and the same cancellation rule. The Courtyard Atlanta Duluth/Gwinnett Place on Venture Parkway is $99 a night and closes 17 September. The City Express Duluth on Stephens Center Drive is $115 and closes 21 September. The Aloft Lawrenceville Sugarloaf on North Brown Road is $135 and closes first, on 8 September.

All three hold the room on a credit card rather than prepaying it, and all three allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before arrival. After that the first night plus tax is charged. WGU marks every one of them subject to availability and limited in quantity.

The tradeThe cheapest rate is also the furthest out. The $99 Courtyard is 3.2 miles from the arena at Gwinnett Place, so on a morning with an 8:30 a.m. check-in you are driving and parking after all. There is also a name trap: the venue lists a different Courtyard on Satellite Boulevard among its nearby hotels, so book by street address rather than by brand.

    Compare rates around Gwinnett Place

  3. The I-85 corridor, Duluth and Norcross

Anyone who wants a predictable chain rate and does not mind driving

    Three to eight miles southwest

Gas South District lists 14 hotels near the venue, and the supply continues down I-85 through Duluth and into Norcross. This is suburban Atlanta with the hotel depth that implies, inside a metro of roughly six million people that pays no attention to the WGU calendar.

If Sugarloaf is priced badly on the night, this is the fallback that does not cost you the morning. Norcross is about eight miles out and has its own supply that is not tied to the arena at all.

The tradeYou are on I-85 on a Saturday morning, and the interstate is the variable that actually decides whether the drive takes fifteen minutes or forty. We have not measured availability or rates anywhere in this corridor.

Check rooms in Duluth Check rooms in Norcross

  4. Midtown Atlanta

Anyone whose weekend is really about the Friday celebration

    22 miles from the arena

The Friday evening Alumni Celebration is at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree Street NE, in Midtown. That is the actual city of Atlanta, and it is 22 miles from the arena where Saturday happens.

If you are coming for the celebration and not the ceremony, or if the graduate is in the afternoon ceremony and you would rather have Friday night properly, this is where to be. Midtown also has the restaurants and the transit that Sugarloaf Parkway does not.

The tradeIt is the wrong end of the weekend for a morning ceremony. Booking here and attending the 9:30 a.m. ceremony means 22 miles of I-85 starting before 8 a.m., into $15 card-only parking that opens about an hour before you need to be inside.

    Check rooms in Midtown Atlanta

Both Atlanta addresses on one map

Drawn wide enough to hold the arena in Duluth and the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown at once. The gap between the two markers is the weekend's real problem, and no hotel sits comfortably between them.

Live availability from Stay22. Opening this loads their map.

  5. Hartsfield-Jackson and the south side

Anyone arriving on a late flight the night before

    31 miles from the arena

WGU's graduates fly in from every state, which makes the airport more relevant here than at a residential campus where most families drive. Hartsfield-Jackson is the busiest airport in the country and has hotel supply to match.

It is a reasonable place to sleep off a delayed Friday arrival, and it is 10 miles from the Woodruff Arts Center if the celebration is your Friday.

The tradeIt is on the opposite side of the city from the ceremony, 31 miles and a full crossing of Atlanta away. For an 8:30 a.m. check-in that is a pre-dawn start with no margin, and it is the one area on this page we would not book for a Saturday morning.

    Check rooms near the airport

  6. Anaheim, for the November round

Anyone attending 6 or 7 November at Angel Stadium

Angel Stadium is 2.3 miles from Disneyland and 8.6 miles from John Wayne Airport

The Anaheim round is a completely different lodging problem, and an easier one. Angel Stadium sits inside the Anaheim resort district, whose hotel supply exists because of Disneyland rather than because of anything WGU does. The market is deep and it is not going to be moved by one graduation.

Santa Ana is 3.5 miles away and Garden Grove 4.1, both with their own supply. John Wayne Airport is 8.6 miles out, which is unusually close, and LAX is 32 miles, which is not.

The reason to book close here is the schedule rather than scarcity. There are three ceremonies across two days, the Friday one starts at 3:00 p.m. and the Saturday morning one at 9:30 a.m., and graduates are asked to arrive already in cap and gown because there is no practical way to change at the venue. Where you get dressed is your hotel room.

The tradeWGU publishes no hotel block for Anaheim, so there is no fixed rate and no stated cancellation policy to fall back on. Resort-district pricing moves with Disneyland demand rather than with WGU's calendar, so a November weekend can be expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with your graduate. We have not measured availability or rates here.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to travel at all?

Settle this before you book anything. WGU lets a graduate take part in one ceremony per degree, either virtual or in-person, a policy it dates to January 2022. If your graduate takes part in a virtual commencement for that degree, they cannot also walk at Atlanta or Anaheim, and there is no trip. Note the awkward order of the deadlines: the Atlanta RSVP closes on 9 September, three days before the 12 September virtual ceremony is held, so the choice has to be made before the virtual one happens. Someone already signed up for the virtual who would rather travel should ask the Commencement Office. Two things work in your favour: WGU puts no time limit on when a graduate walks, so a degree finished earlier can still be celebrated at a later round, and a second WGU degree is a separate entitlement.

Where do I stay for WGU graduation?

In whichever city the round is in, because WGU has no campus. The two in-person rounds left in 2026 are Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia on 10 October and Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on 6 and 7 November. Booking near WGU's Salt Lake City headquarters would put you 1,500 miles from either.

Does WGU have a hotel block?

For Atlanta yes, for Anaheim no. WGU names three Atlanta hotels with block rates: the Courtyard Duluth/Gwinnett Place at $99 a night, the City Express Duluth at $115 and the Aloft Lawrenceville Sugarloaf at $135. Each is valid for the nights of 8 to 10 October, each is held with a credit card rather than prepaid, and each allows free cancellation until 48 hours before arrival. No block is published for Anaheim.

When does the WGU hotel block close?

They close on three different days, which is the part most likely to catch you out. The Aloft closes first on Tuesday 8 September 2026, the Courtyard on Thursday 17 September and the City Express on Monday 21 September. The first of those is a day before the ceremony RSVP deadline itself, so the cheapest way to lose the rate is to sort out the ceremony first and the room afterwards.

What is the closest hotel to Gas South Arena?

The Westin Atlanta Gwinnett, at 6450 Sugarloaf Parkway against the arena's 6400, about 632 feet apart. It is not in WGU's block. The Holiday Inn Atlanta Gas South Arena at 6310 is roughly 1,300 feet, and the Hampton Inn Lawrenceville Duluth at 6010 is about 0.8 miles. All three appear on the venue's own list of nearby hotels. We could not establish rates or room counts for any of them.

Should I stay in Atlanta or in Duluth?

It depends which event matters to you, and there is no address that serves both well. The ceremony is in Duluth and the Friday evening celebration is at the Woodruff Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta, 22 miles apart. If you are going to the Saturday ceremony, stay in Duluth and drive in on Friday evening. If the celebration is the reason you are travelling, stay in Midtown.

How much is parking at the ceremony?

$15 for event parking at Gas South District, or $40 for valet, by credit card, debit card or phone payment only. There is no cash option. Arena guests use Lot A and Deck 2, and the district says event lots typically open about two hours before the event, which for a 9:30 a.m. ceremony is roughly 7:30 a.m. against a graduate check-in of 8:30 a.m.

Is Anaheim expensive that weekend?

We have not measured it and will not guess. What is worth knowing is why it might be: Angel Stadium is 2.3 miles from Disneyland and sits inside a resort hotel market whose pricing follows theme-park demand, not WGU's calendar. That cuts both ways. The supply is deep enough that one graduation does not empty it, and the rate you are quoted may have nothing to do with your graduate.

How many nights do I need?

For Atlanta, two: the Friday and the Saturday, arriving in time for the 7:00 p.m. celebration and leaving on Sunday. For Anaheim, three if your graduate is in the Friday 3:00 p.m. ceremony, because that means arriving on Thursday. The booking windows on this page are set that way.

Where should I stay for WGU graduation 2027?

Nowhere yet, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. WGU has published no 2027 dates or cities. It announced 2026 as a complete set and it changes host cities from year to year, so the 2027 series is likely to appear all at once rather than city by city. Our ceremony logistics page carries what is published and what is not.
