The University of South Florida holds every commencement ceremony, for all three of its campuses, in the Yuengling Center in Tampa. The next round is tentatively Friday, December 11, Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, 2026, and spring is tentatively Thursday, May 6, Friday, May 7, Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9, 2027, as a series of ceremonies over several days. Guests need no tickets, but seating is first come, first served and saving seats is not allowed, so the doors, which open an hour before the start, decide where your family sits. Parking is free.

Arriving at the right minute is the whole plan

At most arena graduations the ticket is the thing to sort out. USF has none, which moves the pressure to a single moment on the day itself: the doors opening.

Seating at the Yuengling Center is first come, first served, and USF does not allow seat saving. One person cannot arrive early and hold a row for grandparents parking later. If the family wants to sit together, it has to walk in together.

The doors open sixty minutes before a bachelor’s or master’s ceremony and ninety minutes before a doctoral one. Until then USF asks guests to stay in their cars rather than wait outside the building, so the sensible plan is to be parked, with everyone in the car, a little before the doors open. Then allow for security: every person entering, graduates included, goes through a bag check and a metal detector.

Which ceremony, and when

USF runs a series of ceremonies over several days each round, and all of them are in Tampa. Graduates from the St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee campuses cross the same stage, at the Yuengling Center, rather than one near home.

The university has published tentative windows for the coming rounds, shown in the table above, and it releases the final schedule, showing which graduates are in which ceremony, in mid-October for fall and later in the academic year for spring and summer. Until then the window is all a family can plan around. A bachelor’s or master’s ceremony lasts about ninety minutes; a doctoral ceremony about two hours. Graduates sit with their college on the arena floor, not in alphabetical order, so friends from the same college can sit together if they arrive on the floor together.

One detail matters for anyone travelling a long way: USF announces a graduate’s name only if they are at the ceremony. Every ceremony is livestreamed on the university’s YouTube channel for relatives who cannot make the trip.

Parking, the shuttle and the gates

Parking on the Tampa campus is free during commencement, and no permit is needed. Guests parked anywhere other than Lots 22D, 22E, 22F and 18 can ride a Bull Runner shuttle to the building. For a satnav, use the arena’s street address, 12499 USF Bull Run Drive, Tampa. USF suggests entering through Gates B, C or D.

What the arena lets in

The bag limit is 12 by 12 by 12 inches, and backpacks are refused, although diaper bags and medical bags are allowed. Signs are allowed, up to standard poster-board size, but not mounted on a pole or stick. Food, drinks and outside bottles are not allowed, and there is no re-entry, so settle everyone before going in. Strollers that fold under a seat are preferred; larger ones can be checked at Guest Services in the Gate A lobby, where wheelchairs and walkers can also be checked. The guest elevator is inside Gate D.

For guests who are deaf or hard of hearing, section 113 faces the sign-language interpreters, but it is held only for the first thirty minutes after the doors open. Assistive listening devices can be reserved a day ahead through the arena’s Guest Services. After the ceremony, graduates leave the arena through the same corridor they entered by, which USF says is to make reunions with families easier.

Where to sleep

North Tampa is well supplied for a campus this size. Five chain hotels are within a mile of the university on HotelGuides’ measure: the Embassy Suites on Spectrum Boulevard, the Home2 Suites on McKinley Drive at the edge of campus, the Holiday Inn on Fowler Avenue, and the Red Roof Plus+ and the Hyatt Place on North 30th Street. Together they hold about 675 rooms and suites, and none of them publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule.

Beyond them is the whole of Tampa Bay. Downtown Tampa is under twenty minutes by road with no traffic, Wesley Chapel and Brandon about the same, and the Westshore and airport hotels under half an hour. Interstate traffic at rush hour stretches all of those.

With ceremonies spread over three or four days, we grade the pressure as low. That rests on the supply and the spread, not on a count of free rooms, which we have not taken for Tampa. Because the final schedule arrives only weeks before each round, book a cancellable rate across the whole window first, then trim it once you know your graduate’s day.
