UT Austin Graduation Hotels: The City Has Rooms, the Week Has a Squeeze

Your graduate is looking for a room too

Most pages on this site count the beds in a small town and warn you that families are competing for them. Austin does not work that way, and the useful warning here is a different one.

UT’s own academic calendar closes university residence halls on 4 May 2027. The University-Wide Commencement is 8 May. Those four days are not covered by anything the university provides, so a graduate who has spent the year in campus housing needs a paid room for them, in Austin, during the week their family is booking a paid room in Austin.

That is the demand nobody counts. It does not show up in a hotel’s public statements and it is invisible if you only think about visiting families. It is also entirely predictable from a document UT publishes a year in advance, which is why it is the first thing on this page rather than a footnote.

The practical consequence is simple. If your graduate is in a hall, sort their four nights at the same time you sort your own, and consider whether one booking can cover both.

One hotel on campus, and nothing published about its terms

The AT&T Hotel and Conference Center is the only hotel on the University of Texas campus. Its commencement page carries a line worth more than any amount of general advice: “Reservations for 2027 Graduation are now open!” That was live when we re-checked on 10 August 2026, nine months before the ceremony. A hotel does not open a graduation block that early unless it expects to fill it.

What the page does not carry is a room count, a graduation rate, a minimum stay, or a cancellation policy. Other campuses in this project have all four documented and sourced to the property. Here we have none of them, so the table below leaves those cells empty rather than filling them with a plausible number. One detail on that page is worth reading closely before you book. It describes the 2027 weekend as “May 7-9”, a Friday to Sunday. UT’s own 2026 convocation schedule ran Thursday to Saturday. Those two shapes do not start on the same day, and the section below explains why that matters.

The drive, and one town that looks better than it is

The figure above sorts the alternatives by how long you will spend in the car.

Round Rock is the strongest of them. Twenty-two minutes north on I-35, a genuine Austin-metro suburb with its own hotel corridor rather than an overflow strip, and roughly 1,800 properties on a live availability check with no sold-out signals anywhere in the results. Georgetown sits further up the same road at about 35 minutes and returned a comparable figure, near 1,950.

San Marcos deserves a warning. It is also 35 minutes out, which makes it look interchangeable with Georgetown on drive time alone, but the same check returned only about 170 properties there. It is a much smaller market, and it is Texas State University’s home town, so its own academic calendar competes for the rooms that exist. On the map they look equivalent. They are not.

One caveat on all three numbers, because it changes how much to lean on them: the availability check ran in July 2026 for the 7 to 9 May 2027 weekend, and the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation. What we can stand behind is inventory depth and hotel tier. A converted dollar figure is not something we are prepared to publish.

Gaps we are not going to paper over

The commencement date comes from UT’s Office of the Registrar, whose 2026-2027 academic calendar lists “May 8, University Commencement (official graduation date)”. We re-read it in a browser on 10 August 2026 and cross-checked the weekday ourselves: 8 May 2027 is a Saturday. That arithmetic is ours rather than a claim UT makes, and the check exists because a date carried forward from a previous year almost always fails it.

There is a trap worth naming. UT’s commencement website still shows only the 2026 ceremony, the 143rd, on Saturday 9 May, and the ceremony page still describes it in the future tense. Several search results repeat that May 9 as though it were 2027. The registrar is the document that settles it.

Left unestablished: any published rate, minimum stay, cancellation term or room count for the AT&T Center; a dollar comparison for the three ring towns; and the 2027 college convocation schedule, which decides how many nights you actually need. Those are absent here rather than estimated.
