Waco is not short of rooms. A live check for the December window returned 79 bookable properties in Waco against 41 in Temple and 39 in Killeen, so the epicenter here is genuinely the deepest market on its own ladder. Baylor's risk is COLLISION instead: Marissa Maguire, general manager of the AC Marriott downtown, told KXXV that all 182 of her rooms were booked when a Willie Nelson concert landed on the same weekend as a recent Baylor graduation, compounded by a Canvas outage that pushed finals and move-out later. So the instruction is to check what else Waco has scheduled on your dates rather than to book in panic. One thing that does raise your own room count: Baylor requires no tickets for commencement, so your party size has no ceiling.

The risk here is collision, not shortage
Most clusters on this site describe a town that cannot hold its own graduation. Waco can. Treating it as a generic sellout story would give families the wrong instruction, so here are the numbers first.
A live availability check on 11 August 2026, for a two-night stay spanning the ceremony:
| Where | Drive | Bookable properties |
|---|---|---|
| Waco | epicenter | 79 |
| Temple, TX | 45 min | 41 |
| Killeen, TX | 60 min | 39 |
Waco is the deepest market on its own ladder, by roughly two to one. That is unusual on this site and it should change how you plan.
What has been documented here is not shortage. It is a collision. Marissa Maguire, general manager of the AC Marriott in downtown Waco, told KXXV News her property was fully booked at all 182 rooms. The cause was not graduation by itself: a Willie Nelson concert landed on the same weekend, and a Canvas outage had pushed Baylor’s own finals and move-out later, stacking students, families and concertgoers into the same nights.
A named manager, a named property, an exact room count and a stated cause. Very little of the lodging evidence on this site is that specific.
So the instruction is not “book a year ahead because Waco always sells out.” It is check what else Waco has scheduled on your weekend, which is something you can look up now rather than discover later.
The thing that changes your own room count
One detail from the ceremony side belongs here, because it decides how many rooms you need rather than whether they exist.
Baylor requires no tickets for commencement. Seating is first-come, first-served, with no allocation and no cap. Nearly every other university covered on this site rations seats at four to eight per graduate, and that allocation quietly decides how large a travelling party can be. Baylor leaves it entirely to you.
If your graduate has grandparents, siblings, aunts and cousins who all want to come, they all can. Count the beds before you assume this is a two-room trip.
The morning sitting is the one that costs you a night
The December ceremony runs in two sittings, 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., split by school, with doors 90 minutes before each.
That means the morning sitting starts admitting at 8 a.m. Temple is 45 minutes away and Killeen an hour, before parking, before a security line with metal detectors, and before finding first-come seats together. Driving in on the morning is not realistic.
An afternoon graduate has a completely different problem, which is to say almost none. Doors at 1 p.m. is a comfortable morning drive from either ring town.
So the honest advice splits: check which sitting your graduate is in before you decide whether the Friday night is optional. The logistics page has the full school-by-school table.
A long ring, and no near suburb
Waco’s fallbacks are far. Temple at 45 minutes, Killeen at 60, both south on I-35, with no twenty-minute suburb carrying its own hotel strip in between.
On an ordinary weekend that does not matter, because you will find something in Waco. On a collision weekend it matters a great deal, and it is why securing nights beats leaving them flexible here.
Of the two, Killeen is the more dependable fallback. Its hotel base serves Fort Cavazos, so its occupancy follows military rather than Baylor rhythms and it is the least likely of the three markets to be drawn down by whatever Waco is hosting.
Waco’s baseline is higher than it used to be
Worth a short note, kept in proportion.
Waco draws year-round visitors in a way it did not a decade ago, Magnolia being the best-known reason. That raises the baseline a graduation crowd is added to, which makes collisions likelier and their effects sharper.
This page does not treat that as a graduation-specific scarcity factor, because it is not one. It is context for why 182 rooms went when something else arrived at the same time.
What is not established
No commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy at any named Waco property was confirmed. Whether anything is scheduled in Waco on either commencement weekend is not stated here, because that is precisely the check this page is asking you to run closer to the time.
The 182-room sellout describes a specific past weekend reported by KXXV. It is evidence of how this market behaves under load, not a forecast for December.
Planning an autumn trip instead? Homecoming runs 2 to 7 November and returned 63 bookable Waco properties on the same check, sixteen fewer than the December window.

The ring
| Town | Drive time | Typical availability | Rate vs. epicenter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temple, TXCheck rooms in Temple, TX → | 45 min | 41 bookable properties on a live check for the December window on 11 August 2026, none flagged sold out. A genuine separate market, though roughly half Waco's depth. | Broad chain-hotel tier, generally below downtown Waco. |
| Killeen, TXCheck rooms in Killeen, TX → | 60 min | 39 bookable properties on a live check for the December window on 11 August 2026, none flagged sold out. Its base is tied to nearby Fort Cavazos, so inventory persists year-round rather than tracking Baylor's calendar. | Broad chain-hotel tier, generally below downtown Waco. |
Counts come from a live per-window availability check run on 11 August 2026 for a two-night stay spanning the ceremony. Killeen's inventory is worth understanding differently from Temple's: because it serves Fort Cavazos, it is the ring town least likely to be drawn down by a Waco event.

Frequently asked questions
Does Waco sell out for Baylor graduation?
Not reliably, and that distinction is the whole point of this page. A live check for the December window returned 79 bookable properties in Waco, which is real depth for a city this size and deeper than either fallback town. What has been documented is a collision, not a chronic shortage.
What exactly was documented, and by whom?
Marissa Maguire, general manager of the AC Marriott in downtown Waco, told KXXV News her hotel was fully booked at all 182 rooms. She attributed it to two things landing together with graduation, a Canvas outage that pushed Baylor's finals and move-out later, and a Willie Nelson concert the same weekend. A named manager giving a room count for her own property is unusually specific evidence.
So what should I actually check before booking?
What else Waco is hosting on your weekend. A concert, festival or major sporting event is what turns an ordinary graduation weekend into a full one here, and unlike most risks described on this site it is knowable in advance. Waco's own events calendar is the place to look.
How many guests can we bring, and does it affect rooms?
As many as you like, and yes. Baylor requires no tickets for commencement and seats guests first-come, first-served, so nothing caps the size of your party except what you are willing to book. Most universities on this site ration seats at four to eight, which quietly caps the travelling group. Baylor does not.
What are the fallbacks, and how deep are they?
Temple at about 45 minutes with 41 properties, and Killeen at about 60 with 39. Both are real markets, roughly half Waco's depth. Killeen is the more reliable of the two on a collision weekend because its base serves Fort Cavazos rather than tracking anything Waco is doing.
When is the ceremony, and does the time change my nights?
Saturday 19 December 2026, in two sittings at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. split by school, with doors 90 minutes before each. The 8 a.m. doors for the morning sitting are not reachable on the day from Temple or Killeen with any comfort, so a morning graduate makes the night before non-negotiable. An afternoon one does not.
