San Marcos carries about 61 bookable properties and sits on the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, which changes how this cluster works: demand does not stop at the city limit, it spreads along the interstate. Local hospitality guidance says commencement ceremonies bring large family groups who book out the corridor well in advance and names Kyle, Buda and New Braunfels as where to go once San Marcos fills. We measured the December window and it came back flat, 61 against a control median of 60, so the December round is a book-for-convenience one. Spring is the round that earns the corridor's reputation: Texas State's own newsroom called spring 2026 record-setting, more than 5,200 candidates across eight ceremonies over three days, and spring 2027 runs three days again, 13 to 15 May.

The corridor, not the town
San Marcos is not an isolated college town, and describing it as one would miss what actually happens here.
It sits on the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, with a real but limited hotel base of its own. Local hospitality guidance puts the graduation effect plainly: ceremonies “bring large family groups who book out the corridor well in advance.”
Note the word. Not the town, the corridor. Demand does not stop at the San Marcos city limit, it spreads along the interstate in both directions, which is why the same guidance names Kyle, Buda and New Braunfels as the places to go once San Marcos itself sells out.
That is a more useful mental model than a ring of independent towns. You are competing for rooms along a line, and everybody else is moving along the same line.
Sixty-one properties, and December did not move them
This cluster had no live availability data at all until now. It does now, and the answer is calmer than the reputation.
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 13 to 15 November | 61 |
| 20 to 22 November | 64 |
| 10 to 12 December (commencement) | 61 |
| 8 to 10 January 2027 | 59 |
| 15 to 17 January 2027 | 59 |
Five matched two-night searches, same town, one session, 16 August 2026. The ceremony window sits at 61 against a control median of 60, which is flat by any reading.
So San Marcos carries roughly sixty bookable properties in any week of the year, and the December round has not visibly changed that four months ahead. For December, book for location and rate.
Spring is the round the guidance is about
The corridor reputation and the flat December reading are not in conflict. They describe different rounds.
Texas State’s own newsroom called spring 2026 a record-setting commencement: more than 5,200 degree candidates across eight ceremonies over three days. Spring 2027 is a three-day round again, Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 May.
December is six ceremonies compressed into two days, and the compression is the point: everybody comes and goes inside the same forty-eight hours, on a smaller round, in a market of sixty properties that absorbed it.
Three days of ceremonies has the opposite shape. Families arrive and leave on different days depending on which of the eight ceremonies is theirs, so no single night takes the whole load, but the corridor stays busy across the whole stretch. That is the situation local guidance is describing, and we have not measured it: spring 2027 is nine months out and a single uncontrolled reading is not a measurement.
Two named hotels, and two towns our map cannot reach
Hampton Inn & Suites San Marcos and Hilton Garden Inn San Marcos and Event Center are both named in local visitor guidance as near-campus options. Neither was independently confirmed sold out for a graduation weekend.
On the ring, this cluster has an honest limitation. New Braunfels, 15 minutes south, is the one ring town that resolves on our mapping tool, and local guidance names it as a workable overflow option with easy IH-35 access.
Kyle and Buda, both closer and both toward Austin, are named in the same guidance but do not resolve on our mapping tool despite repeated coordinate attempts. We are not going to publish a map pin that does not work, so they are described here rather than mapped. If you are searching manually, they are worth your time.
Austin and San Antonio sit at either end of the same interstate with enormous hotel markets. Neither is a short drive on a ceremony morning, so treat them as the outer fallback.
One thing to settle before you book anything
Texas State publishes which college attends which of the six December ceremonies, and the spread runs from 10 a.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday.
An Education family and a Fine Arts and Communication family are booking different nights of the same weekend. Get the assignment first: it is on ceremony weekend logistics, along with the venue, the free parking and the shuttle times.
What we checked, and what we could not
The San Marcos counts are five matched two-night searches run in one session on 16 August 2026, two adults, one room. The 5,200-candidate figure and the eight-ceremonies-over-three-days shape come from Texas State’s own newsroom. The December times and college assignments and the 2027 dates come from the university’s own commencement pages, read 17 August 2026. The corridor booking guidance and the two named hotels come from local hospitality guidance.
What we could not establish: a live per-night availability count for New Braunfels, because the search tool’s results page failed repeatedly for this cluster; working coordinates for Kyle or Buda; a per-round venue confirmation, since Texas State names the University Events Center for commencement generally rather than against a specific date; and minimum-stay or cancellation terms at either named hotel. Neither 2027 round was measured.

A live Google Hotels availability check, the method used for most other clusters in this project, could not be completed this session; the search results page repeatedly failed to load through our research tools. Frequently asked questions
How many hotels does San Marcos have?
About 61 bookable properties, measured five times across one session on 16 August 2026: 61, 64, 61, 59 and 59. That is a mid-size market by this project's standards, deeper than a small college town and far shallower than the two metros at either end of the interstate.
Is December hard to book?
Not on the evidence. The 10 to 12 December ceremony window returned 61 properties against controls of 61, 64, 59 and 59. Flat. Six ceremonies packed into two days have not moved this market four months out.
Then why does local guidance say the corridor books out?
Because that guidance is describing spring, and it is right about spring. Texas State's own newsroom called spring 2026 record-setting: more than 5,200 degree candidates across eight ceremonies over three days. Spring 2027 is a three-day round again, Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 May. December is smaller, shorter, and measured flat.
What does local guidance actually recommend?
A San Marcos hospitality guide states that graduation ceremonies "bring large family groups who book out the corridor well in advance," and recommends Kyle, Buda or New Braunfels once San Marcos hotels sell out.
Which hotels are near campus?
Hampton Inn & Suites San Marcos and Hilton Garden Inn San Marcos and Event Center are both named in local visitor guidance as near-campus options. Neither was independently confirmed sold out for a graduation weekend, and neither publishes commencement-specific terms we could verify.
Why is New Braunfels the only ring town listed?
Kyle and Buda, the two closer overflow towns named in local guidance, do not resolve on our mapping tool despite repeated coordinate attempts. Rather than publish a map pin we cannot make work, we list the one that does and describe the other two here.
Can I stay in Austin or San Antonio?
Both are on the same interstate and both have enormous hotel markets. Neither is a short drive on a ceremony morning, and a 10 a.m. ceremony from either end means leaving into rush hour, so treat them as the outer fallback rather than the plan.
