The thing to understand about Princeton is that the demand runs six nights, not three. Reunions is Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 May 2027 and commencement week runs Sunday 23 to Tuesday 25 May, so the town is at peak from Thursday through Tuesday. The Nassau Inn on Palmer Square, the closest hotel to campus, runs a dedicated three-night Graduation Package for 23-26 May 2027 which opened online-only on 28 May 2026 at 10 a.m., a hard date the hotel set itself. Note what those three nights cover and what they do not: they start on the Sunday, so the Reunions nights are a separate booking. And the terms are stricter than a normal stay: the inn pre-pays and does not refund Reunion or Graduation weekend reservations, against a 24-hour cancellation window the rest of the year. Six nights, and the first three are not about graduation
The mistake to avoid here is treating Princeton like a weekend campus. It is not.
Reunions runs Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 May 2027, confirmed on Princeton’s own reunions site. It is one of the largest alumni gatherings in American higher education, and it ends on the same day Baccalaureate begins. Then Class Day is Monday 24 May and Commencement Day is Tuesday 25 May.
So the town is at peak from the Thursday through to the Tuesday. Six nights.
The half of that demand driven by returning alumni is, in many cases, booked by people who have been coming back for decades and who rebook as they leave. You are not competing only with other graduating families.
Which nights you need depends on your graduate:
- Commencement only: Monday and Tuesday nights.
- Class Day too: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
- Baccalaureate as well: from the Sunday, and Sunday is also Reunions’ last day.
- Anything to do with Reunions: the whole span, from the Thursday.

A hotel with its own graduation package, and its own rules
The Nassau Inn sits right on Palmer Square, a short walk from campus, and it is the obvious first choice. Rather than leaving families to book a normal room, it runs a dedicated three-night Graduation Package. For 2027 that package covers 23-26 May, and the hotel opened it online-only on a specific date and time it set itself: Thursday 28 May 2026 at 10 a.m.
Look closely at those three nights: 23, 24 and 25 May, arriving Sunday and leaving Wednesday. That covers Baccalaureate, Class Day and Commencement. It does not cover Thursday, Friday or Saturday of Reunions.
If your trip includes any part of Reunions, the package is not the whole answer, and the extra nights are a separate conversation with the hotel.
The terms are stricter than a normal stay, and they name Reunions
The Nassau Inn’s regular cancellation policy is ordinary: cancel by 3 p.m. the day before arrival and you avoid a one-night charge.
Reunion and Graduation weekend reservations do not get that. They are pre-paid in full and non-refundable.
Two things follow. The first is obvious: do not book this weekend until you know which nights you need, because you cannot unwind it. The second is easy to miss and is the more useful signal. The hotel writes Reunion into that policy alongside Graduation. A property does not impose non-refundable terms on a weekend it expects to have vacancies, so the inn’s own contract is evidence that the alumni half of this six-night window is as hard to book as the graduation half.
That is a stated, sourced policy rather than an inference from room counts.
If that exclusive window has already passed
The 28 May 2026 online-only opening is a real date that may be behind you by the time you read this. It does not follow that rooms are gone. Call the hotel and ask about current availability rather than assuming the door has closed.
If the Nassau Inn is full
Trenton and New Brunswick are the ring, both about 20 to 25 minutes out, and both real New Jersey cities with independent hotel markets rather than highway exits. New Brunswick has the deeper base of the two, though it comes with its own caveat in this particular fortnight: Rutgers holds its own Commencement there on Sunday 16 May 2027, nine days earlier, so check which weekend you are pricing.
Princeton sits between New York and Philadelphia, which sounds like it should solve the problem and does not. Both are far enough away that a Tuesday-morning ceremony from either is a serious commute rather than a fallback.
What we checked, and what we could not
The four commencement-week dates come from Princeton’s registrar academic calendar and Reunions from Princeton’s reunions site, both read on 18 August 2026, with every weekday checked independently. The package dates, the booking-open date and time, and the cancellation terms come from the Nassau Inn’s own offers page.
We have not measured availability, and we are not going to guess. The round is nine months out. A single reading at that range is one uncontrolled observation rather than a measurement, and this site does not publish those. What is documented here is a policy, which is better evidence than a snapshot.
What we could not establish: the package rate, any 2027 ticket allocation, and start times or venues for any of the four ceremonies. Princeton’s commencement site is still serving the Class of 2026, so nothing on it describes next May.
