Columbia has not published a 2027 Commencement date. Its own commencement site carries a banner saying the pages are undergoing updates, and its Schedule of Events says it will be updated as more ceremonies are confirmed, so this is a confirmed absence rather than something we could not find. The last held round was Wednesday 20 May 2026 on the Morningside Campus. Because this is Manhattan, the missing date costs far less than it would anywhere else: there is no version of New York that runs out of rooms because Columbia is graduating. The thing worth settling early is which ceremony is actually yours, because Columbia runs a university-wide Commencement plus a large number of separate school ceremonies, and for those guest admission typically begins one hour before the ceremony starts.

Looking for NYU? This page covers Columbia only. Until 18 August 2026 the two shared a single cluster, and the old URLs now land here. NYU’s commencement is a different event in a different part of the city, held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx: NYU Commencement.
There is no 2027 date, and Columbia says so itself
This page does not have a date to give you, and the reason is worth reading because it is unusually clean.
Columbia’s commencement site carries a banner across every page:
This website is undergoing updates. Please check back soon for more details.
And its Schedule of Events page adds:
This page will be updated regularly with additional ceremonies as more details become available.
That is a confirmed absence with a quotable source, which is a much better position than the usual one. We are not telling you a date is unpublished because we could not find it. Columbia is telling you.
The last held round was Wednesday 20 May 2026 on the Morningside Campus. Columbia’s Commencement has historically fallen in the third week of May, and this page deliberately stops short of turning that into a prediction. A pattern is not a date.
Why the missing date matters less here than anywhere else on this site
Most clusters on this site exist because a small town runs out of rooms on one weekend a year, and a missing date is genuinely expensive because you cannot book against it.
Columbia is in Manhattan. There is no version of New York that runs out of hotel rooms because one university is graduating. The city absorbs a Columbia Commencement without noticing.
So the cost of the missing date is not that you might not get a room. It is only that you cannot yet pick your nights. When Columbia publishes, book then, and choose on location and price.
That is why this page is not a scarcity page. This cluster exists to answer a different question.
The question that actually matters: which ceremony is yours
Columbia does not hold one ceremony. It holds a university-wide Commencement on the Morningside Campus, and then each school holds its own ceremony, which is where individual graduates are recognised and where most families spend the time that matters to them.
The practical consequences:
- Most families attend two events, not one, usually across more than one day.
- Your school’s ceremony sets your schedule, not the university-wide one.
- Guest admission for school ceremonies typically begins one hour before the start, which is Columbia’s own general statement and the most useful arrival guidance it publishes.
Columbia publishes the full list of school ceremonies closer to each season. When the site comes back from its update, that list is the thing to read first.
Where to stay, and what close means in this part of the city
Columbia sits in Morningside Heights, on the Upper West Side, with the 1 train at 116th Street running through the campus gates.
| Area | Approximate drive | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side | On the doorstep | Closest to the Morningside Campus. Limited but real hotel presence |
| Midtown Manhattan | ~20 min | Enormous choice, direct 1 train from 116th Street. The usual compromise |
| Jersey City | ~30 min | Cheaper, genuinely deep, but the PATH connection favours downtown |
| Brooklyn | ~40 min | Deep and cheaper, and a long way from Morningside Heights |
Two caveats on that table, and both are ours rather than the university’s. The minute figures are approximate driving times, and in this city that is close to the wrong unit: traffic dominates and the subway is what you will actually use. And we did not complete a live availability count for this cluster, because in a market this deep the number would not change any decision.
What we checked
Columbia’s commencement site and its Schedule of Events page were read in a real browser on 18 August 2026. The last-held date of 20 May 2026 is carried from the previous audit of the combined cluster and is labelled throughout as past.
Not published, and each a real absence: the 2027 Commencement date, the 2027 school ceremony schedule, any venue beyond the Morningside Campus, and any ticket or guest limit.
A note on where this page came from. Until 18 August 2026 Columbia shared a cluster with NYU under a single URL. That cluster’s map was anchored in Midtown, six kilometres from Morningside Heights and serving neither university, because NYU’s own ceremony is at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. One institution per cluster is now the rule, and the NYU half lives at NYU Commencement.

Frequently asked questions
When is Columbia's 2027 Commencement?
Not published. Columbia's commencement site carries a site-wide banner reading "This website is undergoing updates. Please check back soon for more details", and its Schedule of Events page says it "will be updated regularly with additional ceremonies as more details become available". The last held Commencement was Wednesday 20 May 2026.
Can you tell me roughly when it will be?
Not without guessing, so no. Columbia's Commencement has historically fallen in the third week of May, but a pattern is not a published date and this page does not store one. When Columbia publishes, this cluster will carry the date rather than the pattern.
Is there one ceremony or several?
Several. Columbia holds a university-wide Commencement on the Morningside Campus and each school holds its own ceremony, which is where individual graduates are recognised. Most families attend both, and which school ceremony is yours determines most of your schedule.
When should guests arrive?
For school ceremonies, Columbia states that guest admission typically begins one hour before the ceremony starts. That is the university's own general statement rather than a per-ceremony time, and specific ceremonies publish their own details closer to the date.
Do we need to book a hotel early?
Less urgently than for any other cluster on this site. New York City has more hotel rooms than almost anywhere in the country and Columbia's Commencement does not move that market. Book when you know your school's ceremony, and choose on location and price rather than on availability.
Where in the city should we stay?
Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side put you closest to the Morningside Campus. Midtown is about twenty minutes away with a direct 1 train from 116th Street, and is the usual compromise if you want more choice. Brooklyn and Jersey City are cheaper and genuinely deep markets, but both are a long way from Morningside Heights.
