The ceremony is not where the campus is

If you take one thing from this page, take this.

NYU’s All-University Commencement is held at Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx. NYU’s campus is around Washington Square, in Greenwich Village. The two are roughly ten miles apart, at opposite ends of Manhattan and then some.

The individual school ceremonies, where your graduate is actually named and walks, stay downtown near the campus.

So a normal NYU graduation weekend is two locations:

The mistake this page exists to prevent is booking a hotel next to the stadium because that is where “commencement” is, and then spending the rest of the weekend travelling ten miles each way to everything that actually involves your graduate.

Stay downtown, or in Midtown, and travel up for the stadium morning. The stadium is one ceremony on one morning and it is well served by the subway. Everything else is at the other end.

There is no 2027 date yet

NYU has not announced one, and its own page makes that plain by being written entirely in the past tense:

The All-University Commencement for the Class of 2026 took place on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.

That is a confirmed absence rather than one we inferred from a page we could not read. NYU’s commencement has historically fallen in mid-May, and this page stops short of turning that into a prediction.

One ceremony, three graduating terms

A structural detail that surprises families and that the old combined cluster did not record.

NYU states that the 2026 All-University Commencement recognised graduates for the January 2026, May 2026 and August 2026 terms. One ceremony covers three completion terms.

The practical consequence: a student who finishes in August walks the preceding May, several months before their degree is complete. If your graduate’s final term is the summer one, their ceremony is earlier than their finish date, not later, and the travel planning follows the ceremony.

Where to stay

Manhattan absorbs an NYU commencement without noticing, so this is a choice rather than a scramble.

Three caveats, all ours rather than NYU’s. The minute figures are approximate driving times and in this city the subway is what you will actually use. None of them describes the trip to Yankee Stadium, which is a separate journey of roughly ten miles from any of these. And we did not complete a live availability count, because in a market this deep the number would not change a decision.

What we checked

NYU’s own commencement page was read in a real browser on 18 August 2026. The last-held date of 14 May 2026, its 11:00 a.m. start, the Yankee Stadium venue, the 193rd ordinal and the three-term coverage all come from that page and are labelled throughout as past.

Not published, and each a real absence: the 2027 date, the 2027 school ceremony schedule, any ticket or guest limit, and door times for either the stadium or the downtown ceremonies.

A note on where this page came from. Until 18 August 2026 NYU shared a cluster with Columbia under a single URL. That cluster’s map was anchored in Midtown, which served neither: Columbia graduates in Morningside Heights and NYU graduates in the Bronx. One institution per cluster is now the rule, and the Columbia half lives at Columbia Commencement.
