Book Ithaca itself, and do not panic. Ithaca College's next commencement is SUNDAY 13 DECEMBER 2026, followed by the Class of 2027 on SUNDAY 16 MAY 2027. Measured across five matched windows, Ithaca holds 22 to 26 bookable properties through the December ceremony and does not move for it. That is worth stating plainly because the same city, on CORNELL's commencement weekend, drops to TWO. Two colleges, one small city, and only one of them empties it. Ithaca College publishes neither a venue nor a start time for either ceremony.

Two dates, and the nearer one was missing
Ithaca College’s future-dates page gives two sentences:
“Commencement for Fall 2026 graduates is scheduled for Sunday, December 13, 2026.”
“Commencement for the Class of 2027 is scheduled for Sunday, May 16, 2027.”
The December ceremony is seven months nearer, and for anyone finishing this autumn it is the only one that matters.
Neither sentence gives a venue or a start time, and neither does this page.
Ithaca does not fill up for this ceremony
There is a strong received idea that Ithaca is impossible for graduation. It is worth taking apart, because it is true of one college and not the other.
We ran an identical two-night search across five matched windows on 12 August 2026:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 28 to 30 November 2026 | 24 |
| 5 to 7 December 2026 | 26 |
| 12 to 14 December 2026 (commencement) | 26 |
| 19 to 21 December 2026 | 24 |
| 9 to 11 January 2027 | 22 |
Flat. The ceremony window ties for the highest of the five.
The May 2027 window measured 21, which is likewise ordinary for the city.
The comparison that explains everything
Here is the same city, measured the same way, for Cornell’s commencement weekend in May 2027:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 14 to 16 May 2027 | 21 |
| 21 to 23 May 2027 | 24 |
| 28 to 30 May 2027 (Cornell commencement) | 2 |
| 4 to 6 June 2027 | 25 |
| 11 to 13 June 2027 | 19 |
Ithaca has roughly two dozen bookable properties on almost every weekend of the year, including both of Ithaca College’s, and two on Cornell’s.
The reason is size. Cornell confers degrees on more than 8,000 candidates across two ceremonies in a stadium. Ithaca College graduates a fraction of that in one Sunday ceremony. Same city, same hotels, completely different demand.
Notice also that 14 to 16 May 2027 sits in that table at 21 properties, and that window contains Ithaca College’s own 2027 commencement. Its weekend registers as an ordinary one even in a measurement built around Cornell.
The one thing worth re-checking each year is whether the two colleges’ dates drift together. In 2027 they are nearly two weeks apart, 16 May and 29 May. If they ever collide, this page’s advice reverses.
The ring, with the recommendation corrected
| Where | Drive | Bookable properties |
|---|---|---|
| Ithaca | epicenter | 26 |
| Cortland, NY | 37 min | 9 |
| Elmira / Horseheads, NY | 45 min | 12 |
| Corning, NY | 54 min | 11 |
| Binghamton, NY | 62 min | 26 |
| Syracuse, NY | 69 min | 60 |
Cortland is worth a specific warning, because its drive time makes it look like the obvious first call. Measured, it is the thinnest town on the ring at around nine properties.
Syracuse is the real depth here, and it has an airport. Binghamton matches Ithaca’s own supply at about an hour out. The three nearer towns are all single figures to low teens and should be treated as backstops.
Given how steady Ithaca itself is for these ceremonies, most families will not need the ring at all.
What is not established
Venue and start time for either ceremony: not published by the college.
Ticket or guest policy: not published.
Everything above is measured. Treat much larger figures quoted elsewhere for these towns as regional search totals rather than counts of bookable rooms.

- Country Inn & Suites by Radisson (closest hotel to campus): 58 rooms, 1100 Danby Road, less than a mile from Ithaca College. Ithaca College's own 125th-anniversary weekend lodging page listed this property among "nearly all major chains" showing sold out for that comparable event weekend. No commencement-specific minimum-stay or cancellation policy was independently confirmed.

Counts are bookable properties for an identical two-night search, 12 to 14 December 2026, run against a single booking engine in one session on 12 August 2026. The five counties here are the right ones to be looking at: Cornell's own commencement office names the same overflow region, and Ithaca College independently points families at the same towns.

Frequently asked questions
When is Ithaca College's next commencement?
Sunday 13 December 2026 for Fall 2026 graduates, then Sunday 16 May 2027 for the Class of 2027. Both come from the college's own future-dates page, which gives the dates and nothing else.
Is Ithaca hard to book that weekend?
Not for this ceremony. We measured 24, 26, 26, 24 and 22 bookable properties across five matched two-night windows around the December date on 12 August 2026. The ceremony window is indistinguishable from its controls.
But isn't Ithaca notoriously full for graduation?
For CORNELL's graduation, yes, and it is worth keeping the two apart. Cornell's May 2027 commencement weekend measured two bookable properties in this same city against 21 to 25 on the weekends either side. Ithaca College's weekends measure normal. Cornell graduates more than 8,000 candidates across two ceremonies; Ithaca College is a fraction of that on a single Sunday.
Could my dates overlap with Cornell's?
Not in 2027. Ithaca College is Sunday 16 May and Cornell is Saturday 29 May, nearly two weeks apart. That is the one thing genuinely worth checking each year, because an overlap would change this page completely.
Where is the ceremony held?
Not published. Ithaca College's May 2026 ceremony was in Glazer Arena inside the Athletics and Events Center on the South Hill campus, which is the reasonable expectation, but the college has not announced a venue for December 2026 or May 2027 and we are not going to print one it has not confirmed.
Where should I look if Ithaca is full?
Syracuse, at about 69 minutes, with roughly 60 properties and an airport. Binghamton is 62 minutes with around 26. The nearer towns are much smaller than they look: Cortland at 37 minutes holds around 9, Corning around 11 and Elmira around 12.
