Virginia Tech Commencement: 18 December 2026 and 14 May 2027

Both rounds are published now

Virginia Tech has published both rounds, and the nearer one is December. If you have seen the May 2026 schedule quoted as a guide, that round has already been held; the dates below are the published 2026-27 ones.

Virginia Tech’s wording is short and worth having exactly: “Fall commencement is Friday, Dec. 18, 2026. Ceremonies will be held in Cassell Coliseum,” followed by the two times, and “University commencement is Friday, May 14, 2027 and will be held in Lane Stadium. Check back for additional details regarding individual college ceremonies.”

What is genuinely not published: the May times

December now has its times. May does not: no start time and no college-level schedule. That is a real absence rather than something we failed to find, and it matters more here than at most universities.

Virginia Tech runs individual college ceremonies alongside the university-wide one. The university ceremony is the shared event; it is generally not where individual names are read. Which college ceremony is yours, on which day and at which hour, is the fact that decides your nights, and it is exactly the fact still to come.

The practical consequence is uncomfortable in a market like Blacksburg’s: you are being asked to book in a town with documented sell-outs before knowing your schedule. The answer is to hold refundable nights across the likely span and release them when the college schedule lands, rather than to wait, which is how people end up in Roanoke.

Lane Stadium is outdoors, and there is no published wet-weather plan

Worth separating from December, because the two rounds are different propositions.

December is indoors in Cassell Coliseum. Whatever a Blue Ridge December is doing outside, the ceremony is unaffected.

May is in Lane Stadium, which is Virginia Tech’s 65,000-seat football stadium and open to the sky. We looked for a rain or severe-weather policy on Virginia Tech’s commencement pages and did not find one. Plan clothing rather than a contingency, and check with the university in the week beforehand if the forecast turns.

Getting in: the bag rule is stricter than most

Virginia Tech publishes this as standing policy rather than per round, so it applies to both.

One clear plastic bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear resealable storage bag, per person. That is the whole allowance. No other bags are permitted inside.

Two details that catch people out:

• Everything is subject to search, including the clear bag itself, at every commencement venue.
• Nothing can be left or stored at the doors or gates. There is no cloakroom and no bag check. Anything that fails the policy goes back to the car, which at Lane Stadium is a considerable walk.

Parking, and the accessibility deadline

Parking is published by venue, which is useful because Virginia Tech uses several.

• Cassell Coliseum: Lots 1, 2 and 4 are available for the university ceremony, and Lot 1 for the graduate ceremony. Guests enter via the Washington Street or Beamer Way entrances.
• Burruss Hall: the Perry Street Garage is free for guests, entering at the front of the building. Accessible guest access is through the tunnel, following the signage.

Requests for guest accessibility accommodations at individual college ceremonies must be made at least TEN BUSINESS DAYS in advance, to Virginia Tech’s Office for Civil Rights Compliance and Prevention Education. Two working weeks. If someone in your party needs accessible seating, that request has to be made well before the ceremony schedule feels urgent.

What we checked

Both dates and both venues were read from Virginia Tech’s own commencement schedule page on 18 August 2026, and the guest rules from its prohibited-items, parking and ADA pages. Days of the week were checked independently: 18 December 2026 is a Friday and 14 May 2027 is a Friday.

Not published, and each a real gap: a start time for either round; the individual college ceremony schedule for either round; any wet-weather plan for the outdoor May ceremony; and any ticket or guest limit.
