Washington and Lee holds two commencements a fortnight apart, and which one is yours decides everything else. The School of Law graduates on Friday 14 May 2027. The undergraduate College and Williams School graduate on Thursday 27 May 2027 at 10:00 a.m., with the Baccalaureate Service at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday 26 May. Those times come from W&L's own 2026-2027 academic calendar, which is a genuinely 2027-dated source rather than last year's page. Note what the undergraduate pair does to your booking: a 10 a.m. Wednesday service followed by a 10 a.m. Thursday ceremony is a Tuesday and Wednesday night stay in a small Shenandoah Valley town, not a weekend. W&L has published no venue for either 2027 round; it held its 2026 ceremonies on the Front Lawn of the main campus.

Two commencements, thirteen days apart
Washington and Lee does not have a graduation weekend. It has two graduations, and they are two weeks apart in the same small town.
| When | Ceremony | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 14 May 2027 | School of Law Commencement | not published |
| Wed 26 May 2027 | Baccalaureate Service | 10:00 a.m. |
| Thu 27 May 2027 | Undergraduate Commencement, College and Williams School | 10:00 a.m. |
The law date comes from W&L’s law academic calendar for 2026-27; the undergraduate pair from its undergraduate academic calendar. Both are 2027-dated documents rather than last year’s pages, which is why the times are usable.
If you are booking for a law graduate and you read a late-May date somewhere, that is the undergraduate ceremony. The reverse mistake is the more expensive one, because mid-May in Lexington has its own pressures.
The undergraduate round is midweek, and that is the whole booking problem
Look at the two mid-morning starts again: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, then 10:00 a.m. Thursday.
A family attending both is arriving Tuesday evening and leaving Thursday afternoon at the earliest. That is Tuesday and Wednesday nights, midweek, which is not the shape anyone expects from a graduation and not the shape hotel booking sites nudge you toward.
Even a family attending only the Thursday ceremony is looking at the Wednesday night, because a 10 a.m. start in a Shenandoah Valley town an hour from any interstate city is not a drive-in.
The one advantage: midweek is when a small town’s hotel base is otherwise at its quietest. The disadvantage is that everyone else attending is in exactly the same position.
The venue is not published for 2027
W&L held its 2026 ceremonies, both law and undergraduate, on the Front Lawn of the main campus, at 10 a.m.
We are not printing that as a 2027 fact. The page carrying it, my.wlu.edu/commencement, is entirely on the 2026 cycle: it heads “2026 Commencement” and describes the 277th year in the life of the university. Neither academic calendar names a venue for 2027.
The Front Lawn is very probably the answer for both rounds. It is not published, so it is not stated here as one.
One thing that is published and worth knowing before you pack: W&L prohibits loud noisemakers, including air horns and confetti poppers, at both the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies.
A small town with a crowded spring
Lexington is genuinely small, and its graduation pressure does not come from one event.
W&L itself supplies two of the weekends. Virginia Military Institute, immediately adjacent on the same hillside, holds its own commencement in the same season. Frommer’s Lexington travel guide names both institutions when it says rooms are hardest to find and rates highest “during football weekends, graduation, and other activities”.
That is a statement about the town’s calendar rather than about any one ceremony, and it is the honest version of the scarcity argument here: a thin room base and a crowded spring, rather than a documented sellout. No named Lexington property has been confirmed sold out for a graduation, and this page does not imply one.
The practical consequence is the same either way. Book early, and check which spring weekend you are actually pricing.
What we checked, and what we could not
Every date and time above was read from Washington and Lee’s own undergraduate and law academic calendars on 18 August 2026, with the weekdays checked independently: 14 May 2027 is a Friday, 26 May a Wednesday and 27 May a Thursday.
Not published for 2027: a venue for either round, a start time for the law ceremony, ticket or guest limits, and any parking or accessibility arrangement.
Not measured: hotel availability. The nearest round is nine months out, and a single reading at that range is one uncontrolled observation rather than a measurement, so this site does not publish it. A live availability check could not be completed for this market at all, and Buena Vista, the closer of the two natural fallback towns, does not resolve on our mapping tool, which leaves Staunton at 35 minutes as the only ring option we can stand behind.
A note on this page’s history. Until 18 August 2026 Lexington was covered as a single combined cluster with the neighbouring military institute. That cluster has been split so each institution has its own pages, and the Lexington research now lives here. The old URLs redirect to this page.

Frequently asked questions
When is Washington and Lee's 2027 commencement?
There are two. The School of Law graduates on Friday 14 May 2027. The undergraduate College and Williams School graduate on Thursday 27 May 2027 at 10:00 a.m., preceded by the Baccalaureate Service at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday 26 May. We checked all three weekdays against the calendar and they are correct.
Which one is my graduate in?
Law students graduate in the May 14 ceremony. Undergraduates in the College and the Williams School graduate on 27 May. The two are thirteen days apart, so this is the first thing to establish and the easiest thing to get wrong.
Do we need the Wednesday night as well?
For the undergraduate round, almost certainly. The Baccalaureate Service is at 10:00 a.m. on the Wednesday and Commencement is at 10:00 a.m. on the Thursday. Two consecutive mid-morning starts in a town this size means arriving Tuesday and leaving Thursday, which is a midweek stay rather than a weekend one.
Where are the ceremonies held?
Not published for 2027. W&L held both its 2026 ceremonies on the Front Lawn of the main campus, and it is very likely to do so again, but the page naming that venue is entirely on the 2026 cycle so we are not printing it as a 2027 fact.
What time does the law ceremony start?
Not published for 2027. The law academic calendar gives the date and nothing else. The 2026 law ceremony began at 10 a.m. on the Front Lawn.
Is there a December ceremony?
No. W&L's undergraduate calendar carries no December conferral or ceremony; the academic year culminates in the May ceremonies.
