Harvard’s Commencement is Thursday 27 May 2027, in Tercentenary Theatre in Harvard Yard, where degrees are conferred.

Harvard publishes this unusually far ahead. Its Commencement Office schedule lists future dates directly, including “Thursday, 5/27/2027” and “Thursday, 5/25/2028”, and the weekday checks out. Harvard has held Commencement on a Thursday for generations, so the pattern and the published date agree.

It is a week, not a day

The Thursday is the ceremony everyone names. It is the end of a longer run.

In Harvard’s published recent pattern, College and School events fill the Tuesday and Wednesday before it: the College class photo in Tercentenary Theatre, a dessert reception in the Old Yard, and School-level gatherings across the campus. Harvard has not published the 2027 per-day schedule, so those are the recent shape rather than 2027 facts.

The practical consequence is that most families are in Cambridge for several nights, not one, and they are competing for those nights with everyone else doing the same.

MIT graduates the same week, two miles away

This is the fact that decides Cambridge lodging, and it is invisible if you look at either university alone.

MIT’s 2027 ceremonies run 26 to 28 May. Harvard’s Thursday, 27 May, sits inside that window.

So Cambridge is absorbing Harvard families and MIT families on the same nights, in a city whose hotel stock is small relative to either institution’s draw. Harvard Square and Kendall Square are two miles apart on the Red Line and function as one market during that week.

Boston University is a separate wave

BU graduates on Sunday 16 May 2027, eleven days before Harvard, across the river.

That separation is genuinely useful: Boston has two graduation waves rather than one, so a family attending BU is not competing with Harvard and MIT for rooms. The reverse also holds.

What we checked

Harvard’s Commencement Office schedule and the FAS Registrar’s Commencement page were read on 19 August 2026. The 2027 date comes from the Commencement Office’s own published future-dates list, and the weekday was verified independently. MIT’s 26 to 28 May range comes from MIT’s commencement site, read the same day.

Not published for 2027, and each a real absence: the start time, the per-day schedule for the week, School-level ceremony times, and any ticket or guest limit.
