A Friday night game, which is not what families expect

Purdue Fall Family Weekend runs 16 to 18 October 2026, and the thing to know before you book anything is that its centrepiece is on the Friday, not the Saturday.

Purdue hosts Washington at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Friday 16 October. That kickoff time is published on Purdue’s athletics schedule, which is worth noting because most of the rest of their home season is still listed TBA this far out.

Work forwards from eight o’clock. A Big Ten game that starts at eight finishes somewhere around eleven, in a stadium emptying into a small city, and nobody who has driven from Chicago or Indianapolis is starting that journey afterwards. The Friday night is not optional for a travelling family, and once you are staying Friday, Purdue’s weekend running through Sunday makes the Saturday night the obvious second.

So: Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October. That is the window this page passes to the map. A Thursday arrival buys you a full day on campus before the game if you want it, but nothing Purdue has published yet requires it.

What Purdue has actually announced, which is not much yet

It is worth being straight about how thin the official picture is, because several sites will fill the gap with last year’s schedule.

Purdue’s Parent & Family Connections page carries three things: the dates, the sentence that the weekend “will coincide with Purdue’s football game against Washington on Oct. 16”, and a note that football ticket information would be shared in mid to late June. The page was last modified on 1 June 2026, and that ticket note has since fallen out of date without being replaced.

There is no published programme of events, no times for anything other than the game, and no registration detail. Football tickets are a separate purchase from anything the weekend itself involves.

That is the honest state of it as of 11 August 2026. This page will carry the schedule when Purdue publishes one rather than borrowing a previous year’s and hoping it repeats.

Booking a small city on a big weekend

Greater Lafayette is not a large hotel market, and mid-October in a Big Ten town is not a quiet time in it.

The ladder above sorts the options by drive time. Lafayette is the near one at about 5 minutes, across the Wabash and effectively the same market, which is what makes this cluster more forgiving than most small college towns. Indianapolis is the deep fallback at about 71 minutes, a large metro that will not run out of rooms but is a real drive after a game that ends near eleven.

One caution specific to a Friday-night fixture: an 8 p.m. kickoff means you are arriving into West Lafayette during a Friday afternoon, competing with the ordinary end of a working week as well as with other families. Whatever margin you would allow for a Saturday game, allow more.

If you are looking at this weekend and also have a graduate finishing this year, note that Purdue’s next commencement is Sunday 20 December 2026, and it is an unusually large one: the university cancelled its Summer 2026 ceremony while Elliott Hall of Music is renovated and merged those graduates into the December date. The drive times are accurate and the booking links are live, but the availability counts beside them were gathered against a commencement weekend rather than an October football Friday, so read them as a guide to which market is deeper rather than a forecast for these dates.
