IU Bloomington Graduation Hotels: One Campus Hotel, One Vanished Policy

One hotel on campus, and a policy that has disappeared

The Biddle Hotel sits inside the Indiana Memorial Union at 900 East 7th Street. It is the only hotel actually on IU’s campus, and what happened to its commencement terms is worth telling properly, because it is the kind of thing most sites would quietly paper over.

At our last confirmed check, the hotel published a specific commencement reservation policy: a two-night minimum, a full deposit charged 30 days before arrival, and free cancellation up to five days out, with the deposit forfeited inside that window.

Those are real terms that genuinely existed. The problem is what happened next. The hotel rebranded to a new domain, and the commencement reservations page went with it. There is no equivalent page on the current site.

Where that leaves you, stated exactly

We can still see the old policy text in Google’s search index. That is, in fact, how we found it in the first place.

Indexed by Google is not the same as currently in effect. A cached page is evidence that something was true once, not that it is true now, and the gap between those two is exactly where a family loses a deposit.

So this page does something slightly unusual: it tells you the terms and tells you we cannot verify them. Call (812) 856-6381 and ask what applies to your ceremony dates. If the two-night minimum still holds, that changes how many nights you book. If the 30-day deposit still holds, it changes when your money becomes non-refundable.

We would rather hand you a phone number and an honest caveat than reprint numbers that may have lapsed.

December is firm, May is not, and IU says which is which

The near round is settled. Winter Commencement is 6:00 p.m. on Thursday 17 December 2026 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, a single ceremony for all degree candidates. IU publishes it plainly.

Spring is a different matter, and the university is unusually candid about it. IU’s own page marks both 7 and 8 May 2027 as tentative, lists ceremony times as TBA, and marks even the venues tentative. Three separate hedges on one round.

Treat the spring dates as provisional until IU confirms them.

Two rounds, two completely different problems

Bloomington was measured across five matched two-night windows for each round, in one session on 12 August 2026. The results are not similar.

December, around the 17 December ceremony:

Nothing happens. The ceremony window is the highest of the five. That fits what IU has actually scheduled: one ceremony, 6:00 p.m. on a Thursday, which sends most local families home the same night.

Read those two tables together, because the contrast is the useful part. The same town, the same booking engine, the same method, nine months out: December is a normal week and May is effectively gone.

There is a second thing worth noticing. IU marks the May dates tentative, lists the times as TBA and hedges the venues. Bloomington’s hotel market is not treating them as tentative. It has already been stripped for that weekend. Whatever IU’s page says about provisional scheduling, the hotels have made their decision, and a family waiting for confirmation before booking is waiting for a room that has already gone.

Twenty-five minutes to a tourist town, forty-five to a real city

The two fallbacks have different characters, and closer is not automatically better here.

Nashville, in Brown County, is about 25 minutes away and holds roughly 33 to 51 bookable properties. It is a historic county-seat village rather than a highway exit, which makes it pleasant, and its supply is mostly cabins, inns and rentals rather than hotels. It also runs its own tourist season, so its rooms are not sitting empty waiting for IU families.

Columbus is about 45 minutes out with 39 to 41 properties and the deepest mainstream chain inventory in the area. It is a genuinely separate city rather than a Bloomington suburb, and its hotel base runs on its own business.

Martinsville at 30 minutes and Bedford at 35 are smaller again, in the low teens and single figures, and are backstops rather than plans.

The figures above are measured. Be wary of much larger numbers quoted elsewhere for these towns: Nashville is a Brown County village of about a thousand people, and a search that returns hundreds of properties for it is reporting the wider region.

For a 6:00 p.m. Thursday ceremony in December, either works without an early start. The calculation changes for a spring morning ceremony, if and when IU confirms one.

What we checked, and what we could not

The December date, time and venue come from IU’s own upcoming-ceremonies page, with the weekday verified: 17 December 2026 is a Thursday. The tentative labelling on the spring round is IU’s own wording, not our characterisation.

What we could not verify: whether the Biddle Hotel’s commencement policy is still in force. That is the central gap on this cluster and it is disclosed rather than hidden. Also absent: a current published rate for commencement weekend, spring 2027 times and venues, and a dollar comparison for either ring town.
