App State's Fall Family Weekend runs Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026, and the opening event is the thing that decides your booking: App State hosts James Madison at Kidd Brewer Stadium at 7 p.m. on the THURSDAY, televised on ESPNU. A 7 p.m. kickoff in Boone means a game finishing around ten on a mountain road, so families travelling in are staying that night, and App State then runs programming through Sunday. That makes this a three-night weekend rather than the usual two, which is unusual enough to be worth planning for early. The rest of the schedule has not been released yet, and single-game football tickets were not on sale at the time of writing, so the game and the dates are what you can act on today.

A Thursday kickoff, which turns two nights into three

Most family weekends are a Saturday with things attached. App State’s opens on a Thursday night, and that single decision changes what you book.

App State hosts James Madison at 7 p.m. on Thursday 22 October, at Kidd Brewer Stadium, on ESPNU. App State’s own athletics schedule publishes that time and labels the fixture Family Weekend, so the date is confirmed twice over from two university sources.

Work forward from seven o’clock. A game that starts at seven finishes around ten, in a mountain town, with everyone leaving at once. Nobody who drove up from Charlotte or the Triad is starting back down the mountain afterwards. The Thursday night is not optional.

And App State does not treat the game as the finale. It describes the fixture as “setting the stage for a full weekend of programming”, with the weekend running through Sunday 25 October.

So this is a three-night trip, Thursday to Sunday, and that is the window this page passes to the map. If you can only manage two, take Thursday and Friday: that covers the game and the first full day on campus.

Still unpublished

Worth being straight, because other sites will fill this gap with last year’s schedule.

App State has published the dates and the game. It has not published the programme: its page says to stay tuned for the full schedule release later this year. It has also not opened single-game football tickets, noting they are not yet on sale and pointing enquiries at the athletics ticketing office.

That is genuinely all that exists as of 11 August 2026, and this page carries no invented events. What it does mean practically is a clean split in what you should do now: the room is the scarce thing and the tickets are not. Book accommodation against the dates today, and pick up tickets and a schedule when App State releases them.

Boone in late October, and where else to look

The ladder above sorts by drive time. Blowing Rock is about 15 minutes and Lenoir about 40.

Two things worth knowing about this particular weekend rather than graduation weekends generally.

Boone’s demand is seasonal as well as academic. It is a Blue Ridge mountain destination whose hotel base moves with the autumn and ski trade regardless of the university calendar, and late October sits in the busier half of that cycle. App State itself points visiting families at the area tourism site for accommodation, which is a fair signal that the town’s rooms are shared with people who are not there for the university at all.

And the drive matters more here than the mileage suggests. Lenoir is down the mountain rather than along a motorway, and after a game finishing around ten at night, forty minutes of mountain road in the dark is a different proposition from forty minutes of interstate. If you are staying outside Boone, Blowing Rock is the safer choice for the Thursday specifically.

One note if you are also planning further ahead: App State’s next commencement is Friday 11 December 2026, with three sittings split by college, no tickets required and no cap on guests. The where to stay page covers that weekend in the same town.

The availability figures attached to the ring towns in the ladder above were gathered against a commencement window rather than an October football Thursday, so read them as a guide to which market is deeper rather than a forecast for these dates.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Family Weekend dates?

Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026. App State states it directly: "Fall Family Weekend at App State is set for October 22-25, 2026!" Read on 11 August 2026. We checked the weekdays: 22 October 2026 is a Thursday and the 25th a Sunday.

When is the football game, and against whom?

James Madison, at 7 p.m. on Thursday 22 October, at Kidd Brewer Stadium, televised on ESPNU. App State's own athletics schedule publishes that kickoff and labels the fixture Family Weekend, which confirms the dates from a second university source. A published kickoff this far out is unusual and it is the most useful planning fact here.

How many nights do I need?

Three, if you want the whole thing. A Thursday evening kickoff means arriving Thursday, and App State describes the game as "setting the stage for a full weekend of programming" running through Sunday. That is a longer trip than most family weekends and worth budgeting for. If you can only do two nights, Thursday and Friday cover the game and the first full day.

Can I buy football tickets yet?

Not as of this check. App State notes that "single game football tickets are not yet on sale" and directs ticket enquiries to its athletics ticketing office. The wider Family Weekend schedule is also still to come; App State says to stay tuned for the full release later this year. Book the room now, sort the tickets when they open.
