UNC Wilmington holds commencement in Trask Coliseum every December and May. The next ceremonies are on Saturday, December 12, 2026, and the spring round is Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2027. Every guest aged three or over needs a ticket. Each graduate's allotment, historically at least four, is guaranteed only if they claim it by the RSVP deadline, and there is no waitlist. Graduates walk in the ceremony assigned to their college.

Claim the tickets first, book the hotel second

Most graduation guides start with the date. At UNC Wilmington the thing that goes wrong is the tickets.

Every guest aged three or older needs one to get into Trask Coliseum, and that includes a younger sibling who is already a UNCW student. Each graduate is offered a set number for their assigned ceremony, worked out from the size of the graduating group and the size of the building. UNCW says that number has historically been at least four. It is guaranteed, but only on one condition: the graduate has to go into the Commencement RSVP site and claim the tickets before the published deadline. Miss it and the guarantee is gone.

What happens after the deadline is worth understanding. Tickets nobody claimed are released, and graduates who are still registered can then claim extra ones. That is the only route to a fifth or sixth seat. There is no waitlist and no request form, and every ticket is managed through that single RSVP account.

On the day, each guest shows a ticket with its own scannable QR code, printed or on a phone. The practical tip from UNCW is to send each ticket to that guest’s own email address, so that one person is not holding the family’s entire entry on a single phone. Doors open an hour before each ceremony. Children under three get in without a ticket if they stay on a lap.

So the conversation to have with your graduate is not only “which weekend”. It is “have you claimed the tickets, and how many did you get”.

Your graduate’s college decides the time

UNCW does not run one big ceremony. It runs several in a day, each for a group of colleges, and graduates must attend the one they are assigned. The university will not move anyone to a different session.

The December round shows how this works. All three ceremonies sit on the same Saturday: graduate programs from every college in the morning, business and science and engineering undergraduates in the early afternoon, and the health, humanities and education undergraduates in the early evening. A family that assumes “graduation is in the morning” and books a late check-in could miss it entirely.

The spring round is spread over a Friday and a Saturday. The dates are fixed and shown in the table above. The split of colleges across those two days is not published yet; UNCW typically announces times about three months ahead. Until then, the safe booking is both nights, on a rate you can cancel.

Departmental receptions add to the weekend. UNCW says some departments host their own celebrations during commencement week, anywhere from a casual reception to a full ceremony, and that they can start as early as the Thursday before the published dates.

One ceremony for summer and December graduates

There is no summer commencement at UNCW. A student who finishes over the summer walks in December, alongside the fall graduates, and is not eligible for the spring ceremony unless the registrar approves early participation. For a family with a summer graduate, the trip is a December one.

Parking at Trask

Campus parking is squeezed on commencement days. General parking for graduates and guests is the Trask Lot beside the coliseum, with overflow in the Hamilton Lot. The Hanover Lot and Eaton Plaza are closed. Guests with a state disability placard are directed to the north corner of the Trask Lot, and anyone can drop off a guest at the front of the building before going to park. UNCW’s advice is to arrive early and share cars, and on a day with three ceremonies back to back, the lot is turning over between each one.

Where to sleep

There is no hotel on campus, and the nearest ones are not walkable in any useful sense. The closest cluster starts about a mile north of Trask Coliseum, around Van Campen Boulevard, Eastwood Road and Market Street. Nine chain hotels there publish room counts, and between them they hold roughly 1,050 rooms. The six in the table below are the nearest, and none of them publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule.

The rest of the choice is about what kind of weekend you want. Downtown Wilmington, on the Cape Fear River, is about a quarter of an hour west and suits a family that wants to walk to dinner. Wrightsville Beach is the same distance east, over the drawbridge. In May it is a beach town at the start of its season, so expect beach-weekend demand there rather than graduation demand alone. Leland across the river and the airport area to the north are the practical, quieter options.

We have not measured ceremony-weekend availability here, and the tables say so. The judgement we would stand behind is about timing rather than supply: the spring ceremonies fall on a Friday and Saturday just as the coast fills up, and December has no such competition.

Frequently asked questions

When is UNCW graduation?

UNCW holds commencement twice a year, both times in Trask Coliseum. The next ceremonies are on Saturday, December 12, 2026. The spring round is Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2027. The university usually announces which college walks at which time about three months before each round.

How many guest tickets does a UNCW graduate get?

A limited number per graduate, set by venue capacity and how many are graduating. UNCW says the allotment has historically been at least four. The graduate must claim them on the Commencement RSVP site by the published deadline, or the guarantee is lost. Unclaimed tickets are released after that deadline and can then be claimed by anyone still registered, but there is no waitlist.

Do children need a ticket for Trask Coliseum?

Anyone aged three or older needs a ticket, including current UNCW students attending as guests. Children under three do not, as long as they sit on a guest's lap for the whole ceremony. Graduates do not need a ticket.

Which ceremony does my graduate attend?

The one assigned to their college or school. Graduates can see their assignment in their Commencement Registration account, and UNCW does not accept requests to switch ceremonies.

Is there a summer graduation at UNCW?

No. Summer graduates are invited to the December ceremony, and are not eligible for the spring one unless they qualify for early participation through the registrar.

Where do you park for UNCW commencement?

In the Trask Lot, with overflow in the Hamilton Lot. The Hanover Lot and Eaton Plaza are closed on commencement days. Guests with a state disability placard are asked to use the north corner of the Trask Lot; anyone else can drop a guest at the front of the coliseum before parking.

Where should we stay for UNCW graduation?

There is no hotel on campus. The nearest group is a mile or so north, where nine chain hotels on Market Street, Van Campen Boulevard and Eastwood Road publish about 1,050 rooms between them. Downtown Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are each about a quarter of an hour's drive.
