No cap on guests, in a town that has a cap on rooms
Most pages on this site work out how many people are competing for a room. At App State the university has quietly made that number larger, and it did so as a kindness.
App State’s guest information says it plainly: “Tickets are not needed for the commencement ceremonies, and there is no limit to the number of guests per graduate.”
Read that against the rest of this project. Several universities covered here allocate five seats per graduate. One requires a ticket for every person over the age of two. Those caps are frustrating for families, and they also quietly ration hotel demand, because a family that cannot get a sixth seat does not book a sixth bed.
Boone has no such brake. If a graduate wants to bring both sets of grandparents, they can, and all of them need somewhere to sleep in a mountain town of around 20,000 whose hotel base is small and seasonally priced.
That is the argument for booking early here, and it is a structural one rather than a scare story.
What we can and cannot prove about scarcity
Being straight about the evidence, because it is thinner than the argument above might suggest.

What we could not find is a named property confirmed sold out for a graduation weekend specifically. The strongest sellout language we located, from a Boone hotel’s own site, is about football weekends, which is a different thing and is not quoted here as if it were graduation evidence. So this cluster grades elevated on structural scarcity rather than on a documented sellout, and it carries no rate claim.
Boone’s other complication is seasonal rather than academic. It is a Blue Ridge mountain destination, and demand there moves with leaf season, ski season and the summer trade regardless of what the university is doing. A December graduation lands in a different part of that cycle from a May one, which is worth remembering when comparing prices between the two rounds.
Down the mountain, or fifteen minutes across it
The ladder above sorts by drive time and there are two real options.
Blowing Rock is about 15 minutes away and is the more interesting of the pair. It is a resort village with its own hotel and inn inventory rather than a highway strip, which means it holds up as a place to stay rather than merely a place to sleep. It is also priced as a resort, so it is not automatically the cheaper choice.
Lenoir is about 40 minutes down the mountain and is the value option, a larger working town outside the tourist economy entirely. The drive is the trade: it is a mountain descent rather than an interstate run, and it deserves more time than the mileage suggests, particularly on a December morning when the graduate needs to be in place for a 9 a.m. ceremony.
If your ceremony is the 5 p.m. sitting rather than the 9 a.m. one, the Lenoir calculation improves considerably.
The bit that goes wrong at the door
One practical detail, published and easy to miss, because Holmes Convocation Center applies its arena policy to graduation.
Bags must be clear plastic and no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Clutches are allowed up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. One-gallon clear freezer bags are fine, and a diaper bag is fine if it is clear. Backpacks, camera cases, fanny packs, tinted or patterned plastic bags and oversized totes are all refused. Individual seat cushions are permitted only without arms or pockets. All persons and containers are subject to search.
Doors open one hour before each ceremony, App State asks guests to be parked at least an hour ahead, parking is free across several lots and decks on a first-come basis, and guest seating is open on the upper concourse. Plan for about two hours inside.
