CU has already told you how many nights to book

Family weekends are usually published as a date range with no guidance on what to do with it. CU Boulder has done something more useful, probably without meaning to: it has priced the arrival days.

The Gold package at $100 is described as “great for families arriving on Thursday.” The Buffs at $35 and Silver at $75 are “great for families who will not arrive on campus until Friday or later.”

That is a university telling you, in its own pricing copy, that this is a three-night trip for the full experience and a two-night one otherwise. Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 October, or Friday to Sunday. The window this page passes to the map is the full published span.

Whichever you choose, the last night is the Saturday, and that is not a judgement call. The Buffs Family Sendoff runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon on the Sunday, and the Buffalo Stampede 5K from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A family on an early Sunday flight misses both and spends the Saturday evening watching the clock.

What actually fills the four days

Thursday is quiet: architecture and history tours, then a kickoff reception from 5.30 to 7.30 for Gold holders only.

Friday is the substantial day for anyone who came to see the university rather than the football. Academic college open houses and information sessions, education sessions run by campus offices, more tours, and the Take Care Street Fair from 2 to 4 p.m. at VAC Plaza. It closes with the Pearl Street Stampede from 7 to 8 p.m., which is downtown rather than on campus and is the reason a downtown Boulder hotel earns its price on the Friday night specifically.

Saturday is the game. The Family Weekend Tailgate is open to Silver and Gold holders, and then CU Buffs football against Utah at Folsom Field. Kickoff time is not published yet: CU’s athletics schedule lists it as TBA, which is normal this far ahead because television sets it a few weeks out. That is the one thing that could still reshape your Saturday, so do not book an evening flight against it.

Sunday runs to noon, as above.

Two costs worth flagging before you budget. Football tickets are a separate purchase and are not in any package tier. And you have to buy your student a package too, at $35, which CU recommends matching to your own tier so you can attend the same events.

Where to stay for this particular weekend

The ladder above sorts the options by drive time, and the answer here differs from the graduation answer on the rest of this cluster.

For commencement, the argument is proximity, because CU asks guests to be seated at Folsom by 8:15 in the morning. Family Weekend has no such constraint. Nothing starts before 2 p.m. on the Friday, and the Saturday hinges on a kickoff that has not been set. That makes Longmont at 21 minutes and even Denver at 34 far more comfortable choices than they are in May, and both carry live booking links above.

What tilts it back towards town is the Friday evening. The Pearl Street Stampede is on Pearl Street, downtown, from 7 to 8 p.m., and a walkable hotel turns that into an evening rather than a parking exercise.

Two standing facts about this market apply whatever the weekend. There is no hotel on the CU campus, and the Millennium Harvest House, for years the closest one, closed permanently in 2024 and is being demolished for student housing. CU’s own advice about graduation season, that “hotels in the Boulder area fill up quickly”, describes a market that has lost its nearest property and is worth taking seriously in October as well as May.

Not published, and therefore absent here: the Utah kickoff time, individual session times beyond those listed above, whether any events sell out, and hotel rates for the weekend.
