A date CU publishes three years ahead

Saturday 1 May 2027, at Folsom Field. This one is not an inference, and it is worth saying where it comes from, because it is not where most people look.

CU’s commencement office shows only the May 2026 ceremony, in the past tense. The date lives on the registrar’s academic calendar, in a row reading “Spring 2027 Degree Conferral Date (Commencement Ceremony)” against Sat, May 1, 2027. It is corroborated on the commencement office’s own future dates page, which reads “Spring 2027 - Commencement Ceremony: Saturday, May 1.”

CU publishes further out than almost any university on this site: 29 April 2028 and 5 May 2029 are already listed. If you have a younger student behind this one, those are real dates you can plan around now.

The same calendar closes off a question families ask constantly. CU labels its Fall and Summer conferral dates “(No Campuswide Ceremony)” and reserves “(Commencement Ceremony)” for spring alone. Fall 2026 degrees confer on Friday 11 December 2026 with no ceremony attached. There is no December graduation weekend at CU Boulder to book.

Finals end the day before

This is the part of the schedule that catches families out, and it comes from the same registrar table.

Spring 2027 classes end Friday 23 April. Reading days are the 24th and 25th. Finals run Monday 26 April to Friday 30 April. Commencement is Saturday 1 May.

There is no gap at all. Your graduate is in exams until the evening before they graduate. Two practical consequences follow. A family arriving Friday will find a student who is either finishing a final or has just finished one, so plan the Friday evening gently. And moving out of a room cannot realistically happen before the ceremony, which means either an extra night or a very compressed Sunday.

The morning runs on 8:15, not on a start time

CU does not lead with a ceremony start time. It leads with an arrival instruction, and the instruction is the thing to plan around.

Gates to Folsom Field open at 7 a.m. CU recommends being in your seat by 8:15 a.m. to see the processional enter. And it adds its own warning: “Expect heavy traffic while traveling to Boulder, in the city and on campus.”

Against that, parking is the one thing working in your favour. All campus lots open to the public on a space-available basis, and CU states you may park free of charge on commencement days, including in lots that normally charge. Accessible parking is in Lots 204, 346, 360, 380 and 440 West, with courtesy golf-cart shuttles for anyone who would find the walk to Folsom hard, and an accessible drop-off at Colorado Avenue and Folsom Street, southeast of the stadium. CU suggests reaching that drop-off well before the procession arrives around 8:15.

Read those two facts together and the plan writes itself. Free parking on a space-available basis, on a morning with warned-about traffic, for a seat you want by 8:15, means arriving substantially before you think you need to.

The ceremony most families are actually there for

The campuswide ceremony at Folsom is not usually where a graduate’s name is read. That happens afterwards, at a college recognition ceremony, and CU runs them across five areas of campus: the CU Events Center, the Recreation Center, Macky Auditorium, the University Memorial Center and East Campus.

CU’s advice is to park near your recognition ceremony rather than near Folsom and to use campus transport between the two. That is only actionable once you know which venue your graduate’s college is using, and the 2027 college-by-college assignment is not published. It is the first thing to chase when CU updates its commencement site, because it decides where you park on a morning when parking is free but finite.

None of the 2026 equivalents has been carried forward to stand in for them.
