Most universities publish a family weekend as a date range and leave you to guess the nights. Northeastern gives the hours.

A mid-day Friday start and a mid-day Sunday finish is a two-night trip: Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October. That is the window this page passes to the map. If you are driving in from elsewhere in New England you could compress it, but a mid-day Friday start makes a same-day arrival tight and a mid-day Sunday finish makes a Saturday departure wasteful.
Worth planning around: classes are in session that weekend. Your student has a timetable, and the university says so on the same page rather than letting families discover it.
Book the room before registration opens
Northeastern does something on this page that most universities avoid, which is give lodging advice on the record:

Take the timing seriously. Registration opens mid-September at $25 per adult guest, and the excursion tickets sold with it are first come, first served and, in Northeastern’s words, “reach capacity quickly.” The registration opening is the moment several thousand families are reminded this weekend is coming and start looking for rooms at once.
So the sequence that works is the opposite of the intuitive one. Book a refundable room now, in August or early September, then register in mid-September. Booking after you register puts you behind everyone who did the same thing on the same morning.
Boston in late October is also not a quiet market on its own account. This is peak leaf season across New England, and the city takes conference and sport traffic all autumn. You are not only competing with other Northeastern families.
Where to stay, and what is free
The ladder above sorts the options by drive time. Two things specific to this weekend are worth adding to it.
Parking is free if you get there early. Northeastern provides complimentary parking in its 795 Columbus Avenue Garage, first come first served, with the coupon collected at check-in in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad. If it fills, the overflow is the Renaissance Garage at 835 Columbus Avenue, which is a paid facility and the university states plainly that it cannot validate those tickets. A hotel with parking included is worth more than usual here.
Walking distance is a real option. Northeastern sits in the middle of Boston rather than on a ring road, so the campus corridor, Back Bay and Fenway all put you within a walk or one stop. That is unusual among the campuses on this site and it removes the drive-time calculation entirely if your budget stretches to it.
Quincy and Braintree at about 17 minutes, and Woburn at about 20, are the value options in the ladder and are genuine markets rather than motorway strips.
What Northeastern has not published, and is therefore absent here: a programme with times for anything, the exact registration opening date, which excursions will be offered, and any indication of capacity.
