Northeastern Homecoming 2026 runs Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 November, from the university's own alumni page. Before you book, there is one thing about this particular homecoming that no previous year's advice will tell you: Northeastern no longer has a home arena. Matthews Arena, the oldest indoor ice hockey arena in the world, held its last event on 13 December 2025 and is being taken down, and while its replacement is built the hockey teams are playing home games at Boston University, Harvard, Bentley and UMass Lowell. Two of those are not in Boston. So if a game is what you are travelling for, confirm which building it is in before you choose a hotel, because the answer may not be within walking distance of campus or even in the same city. The new complex is set to open in 2028.

A homecoming with no home arena

Northeastern Homecoming 2026 runs Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 November, and this year it is a genuinely different event from the one returning alumni remember.

Matthews Arena is gone. The oldest indoor ice hockey arena in the world, and the building that hosted Northeastern hockey and basketball for 115 years, held its last event on 13 December 2025, a men’s hockey game against Boston University at 7 p.m. It is being taken down, and the multipurpose complex replacing it is, in the university’s words, “set to open in 2028.”

That leaves a gap right through this homecoming. Northeastern states that while the new building goes up, “the hockey teams will be playing home games at Boston University, Harvard University, Bentley University and University of Massachusetts Lowell.”

Read that list again with a hotel booking in mind. Boston University and Harvard are in the city. Bentley is in Waltham and UMass Lowell is well to the north, both a real drive from the Huntington Avenue campus. A Northeastern home game this season is not necessarily a Northeastern-adjacent evening, and choosing a hotel on the assumption that everything happens on or beside campus is how you end up with an hour in the car after a night game.

There is no football to fall back on either. Northeastern has not fielded a football team since 2009, so homecoming here has never been the stadium Saturday that the word implies at most universities.

What Northeastern has actually said so far, and what it has not

Very little, and it is better to say so than to fill the space.

Northeastern’s alumni relations page carries the dates and one instruction: “New details will be added regularly, so bookmark this page and check back often as Homecoming approaches!” There is no schedule, no list of events, no times, and no confirmation of which fixtures fall inside the weekend or where they will be played.

So this page does not tell you which day the main event is on, because Northeastern has not said. The window it passes to the map is the full published span, Wednesday to Saturday. If you are travelling any distance, the practical expectation is that the back half of that span carries the weight, and the Friday and Saturday nights will tighten before the Wednesday does. That is a judgement about how alumni weekends usually run rather than anything Northeastern has published.

One thing you can act on now: the memorabilia sale. Northeastern is selling pieces of Matthews Arena itself, from hockey lockers and section signs to a ring made from arena brick. For the sort of alumnus who is travelling back for a farewell, that is likely to be the most memorable part of the weekend, and it does not depend on a schedule being published.

Booking a Boston weekend in mid-November

Late autumn is a softer market in Boston than October leaf season or the spring graduation run, which works in your favour. Northeastern also sits inside the city rather than on a ring road, so the campus corridor, Back Bay and Fenway are all walkable or one stop away, and the ladder above carries the value options outward from there.

Two cautions specific to this weekend. Veterans Day falls on Wednesday 11 November, the opening day, which affects traffic and some closures rather than hotel supply, but is worth knowing if you are travelling in that morning. And the ring figures in the ladder above were gathered against a commencement weekend, not a November one: their drive times are accurate and their booking links are live, but treat the availability counts as a guide to which market is deeper rather than a forecast for these dates.

What is absent here rather than estimated: the homecoming schedule, event times, ticketing, which fixtures fall in the weekend, and where any of them will be held. When Northeastern publishes, the venue question is the one to check first.

Frequently asked questions

When is Northeastern Homecoming 2026?

Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 November 2026. Northeastern's alumni relations page reads "Return to campus with the Northeastern community on the weekend of November 11 – 14 to celebrate this year's Homecoming 2026 festivities." Read on 11 August 2026. No schedule of individual events has been published yet.

Is there a homecoming game, and where?

Unresolved, and it is the question to settle before booking. Northeastern has no football team, so homecoming here is built around hockey and basketball rather than a stadium Saturday. And Matthews Arena, which hosted both, closed on 13 December 2025. Northeastern states that while the replacement is built "the hockey teams will be playing home games at Boston University, Harvard University, Bentley University and University of Massachusetts Lowell". Bentley is in Waltham and UMass Lowell is well north of the city.

What happened to Matthews Arena?

It has been retired after 115 years and is being taken down. The last event was the men's hockey team against Boston University at 7 p.m. on 13 December 2025. A new multipurpose athletics complex is being built on the site and Northeastern says "It is set to open in 2028." For alumni, Homecoming 2026 is the first one where the building most of their memories are in is no longer standing.

Which nights should I book?

The published span runs Wednesday to Saturday, and that is the window this page passes to the map. In practice most alumni travel for the back half, so the Friday and Saturday nights are the ones that will tighten first. Until Northeastern publishes a schedule there is no way to be more precise than that, and we are not going to guess which day carries the main event.
