A university that publishes a booking deadline

Almost every family weekend page on this site ends with some version of “book early”. ASU has done better than that: it has given a date.

Its discounted hotel blocks are “available until filled or October 7”, spread across Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Polytechnic and the West Valley. That is a hard cutoff, published by the university, on rooms the university has already negotiated.

And it is not the deadline most families will notice. Registration closes on Sunday 18 October at 11:59 p.m., eleven days later. The natural instinct is to register first and sort accommodation afterwards, which puts you past the room deadline by a week and a half.

So the sequence that works is the reverse of the obvious one. Take a room from the block, or book independently, before 7 October. Register by 18 October. If the blocks fill earlier than the 7th, which ASU explicitly allows for, the effective deadline moves forward without warning.

What the weekend actually is

Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026. Check-in opens on the Friday morning at each campus, with events typically beginning mid-morning.

ASU’s own description of the Friday: all colleges host their signature event for families in the afternoon, with campus signature events in the early evening. That is the shape rather than a timetable, because the full schedule had not been released when we checked.

The anchor is Saturday: ASU hosts Colorado at Mountain America Stadium on 7 November. ASU’s athletics schedule confirms the home fixture. Kickoff time is not published yet, which is ordinary this far out, and it is the one thing that could still reshape your Saturday, so hold off on a Saturday evening flight.

Two nights, Friday and Saturday, is the honest booking, and that is the window this page passes to the map.

Where to stay, and why this cluster is different in November

ASU sits in one of the largest hotel markets in the United States, and the ladder above reflects that: Mesa at about 11 minutes and Scottsdale at about 13, both real cities rather than overflow strips.

That depth cuts both ways in November. You are very unlikely to find nothing. You are quite likely to find that everything worth having near campus has gone, because the constraint at ASU is proximity rather than supply: the only hotel genuinely on campus is the 330-room Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU, and 330 rooms does not go far against a university of this size.

November is also the good half of the Phoenix year, when the weather is the region’s main draw, so you are competing with ordinary leisure demand as well as with other families. That is the argument behind ASU’s own 7 October cutoff, and it is why the block exists at all.

Worth knowing if you are planning further ahead: ASU’s next commencement is Monday 14 December 2026, a working-week ceremony rather than a weekend one, and its schedule is due in September. The where to stay page covers that trip.
