It is on a Monday, and almost nothing written about ASU graduation says so

Start here, because it reshapes the whole trip.

ASU’s next University Commencement is Monday 14 December 2026. Not a Saturday. ASU publishes it on its future dates page, and we checked the weekday rather than assuming it.

For a family flying into Phoenix that means annual leave rather than a weekend, and it means the nights you need are the Sunday and the Monday, not the Friday and Saturday that “graduation weekend” advice will point you at. In December, when Phoenix demand is heavily weekend-weighted, that usually works in your favour on price.

It also means the phrase “ASU graduation weekend” is a small trap. Anything written around it, including hotel marketing, is probably describing a spring Saturday.

The squeeze is walking distance, not supply

Greater Phoenix is one of the largest hotel markets in the United States. It is not going to run out of rooms for a graduation, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

What it will run out of is anywhere you can walk from. ASU has exactly one hotel genuinely on campus: the Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU, 330 rooms. It is a public-private partnership built, in the university’s own description, to support “the hosting of university-related meetings and public functions.”

Set 330 rooms against one of the largest graduating classes of any university in the country and the mismatch is obvious. That is a structural fact rather than a documented sellout, and it is stated as one: no graduation-specific rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy has been confirmed for that property, so none is quoted here.

The practical consequence is that the on-campus room is the thing to move on early, and everything else can wait, which is the opposite of the advice most clusters on this site need.

Eleven minutes and thirteen minutes

The ladder above sorts by drive time, and ASU is unusually comfortable on this measure.

Mesa is about 11 minutes and Scottsdale about 13. Both are real cities with their own hotel economies rather than overflow strips beside an interstate, and the wider metro behind them is deep enough that price, not availability, is the variable you are managing.

Two things specific to a December ceremony are worth adding. Phoenix in December is high season for the region generally, because the weather is the reason people come, so you are competing with leisure demand rather than just other families. And a Monday ceremony sits at the cheap end of that week, so booking Sunday and Monday nights rather than the weekend either side is likely to save real money.

Parking is free, which softens the drive-time calculation further. ASU provides complimentary parking on a first-come basis at both commencement venues, in Lots 58 and 59 and the Packard Drive structures, with the Novus structure as overflow that charges on exit. Accessible parking requires a placard or plate.

What ASU has published, and what is still to come

The date is firm, and the day’s schedule is now out.

ASU’s Fall 2026 schedule lists Graduate Commencement at 9:00 a.m. in Desert Financial Arena and Undergraduate Commencement at 2:00 p.m. in Mountain America Stadium (Frank Kush Field), both on 14 December. Spring 2027 is listed with its schedule due in February 2027.

That matters because ASU splits its University Commencement in two, and the split is standing practice: a Graduate Commencement, where doctoral candidates are hooded by a faculty mentor and have their names read while master’s candidates are announced by college rather than individually, and an Undergraduate Commencement, where graduates are recognised by college as a group. They are held in different buildings on the same day, so check which one your graduate is in before you pick a hotel by walking distance.
