Pick your hotel for the STADIUM, not the university. Arizona's commencement is at Casino Del Sol Stadium on the far south-west edge of Tucson — the resort's own directions are "Exit I-19 West at Valencia Road and then go 6 miles west" and it puts itself about fifteen minutes from downtown. Casino Del Sol Resort shares that address, which makes it the only property you can walk to the ceremony from, and therefore the only genuinely scarce room in a metro that has plenty. Book it first if you want it. Otherwise downtown Tucson is the sensible compromise — deepest inventory, close to campus, and a manageable drive to the stadium — and the airport cluster is the value option that happens to be on the right side of the city. Do not book north: Oro Valley and Marana are the wrong direction, and the ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m.

Book for the stadium, not the university

Most graduation lodging advice starts with “how close to campus can you get”. On this cluster that question is actively misleading, because the ceremony is not on campus.

Arizona’s commencement is at Casino Del Sol Stadium, 5655 W Valencia Rd, on the far south-west edge of the metro. The resort’s own directions are “Exit I-19 West at Valencia Road and then go 6 miles west”, and it describes itself as “just a short fifteen-minute drive from downtown Tucson”. Campus sits on the far side of downtown from that.

So the room that is a five-minute walk from the university is, on the night that matters, a drive across Tucson.

The one scarce room in a city full of them

Tucson is a large market. It is not going to run out of hotels, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise — we have run no availability measurement here and will not imply a count we do not have.

But Casino Del Sol Resort shares its address with the stadium, which makes it the only property you can walk to the ceremony from. One hotel against a graduating class is a genuinely different supply picture from the city around it. If being on site matters to you, that is the first booking you make. Its room count could not be confirmed on the resort’s own pages, so this page states no figure.

The three real options

At the stadium. Casino Del Sol Resort. You walk to commencement. Scarce, so book early.

Downtown Tucson, about ten minutes from campus and about fifteen from the stadium by the resort’s own reckoning. The deepest inventory in the metro and the sensible default if you are splitting the trip between campus and ceremony. Full range of rates, budget through boutique.

The airport cluster, about fifteen minutes out and south of the city — the same side as the stadium. Chain hotels, below downtown on rate, and the least driving if you are flying.

The direction not to book

Oro Valley and Marana are north. The ceremony is south-west. Both have real inventory and Oro Valley in particular has attractive resort properties, but on a night when the ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. you would be crossing the entire metro to get back. They belong on this page for completeness and not as a recommendation.

One honest gap

This site publishes matched-window availability counts for some campuses — five equal-length searches in the same town, the ceremony window third, controls either side. That measurement has not been run for Tucson. What this page offers instead is a published venue address, the university’s own date, and the resort’s own distance figures, and it labels the difference rather than dressing judgement up as data.

  • Casino Del Sol Resort: At 5655 W Valencia Rd - the same address as Casino Del Sol Stadium, where commencement is held, so this is the only property that puts you at the ceremony rather than driving to it. The resort's own location page states it is "just a short fifteen-minute drive from downtown Tucson" and directs visitors to "Exit I-19 West at Valencia Road and then go 6 miles west", which is the clearest published statement of how far out the venue sits. A room count could NOT be confirmed on the resort's own pages on 4 September 2026, so none is stated here. No commencement-specific minimum-stay or cancellation policy was independently confirmed; book direct and ask, and ask early - being on site is the one thing Tucson's wider market cannot substitute for.

Drive times are typical off-peak road times from CAMPUS, not from the stadium, and they are not measured journeys. That distinction matters more here than anywhere else on this site, because campus and ceremony are on opposite sides of Tucson. The only published distance figure comes from the resort itself: about fifteen minutes from downtown Tucson, reached by exiting the I-19 west at Valencia Road and driving six miles west.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tucson sell out for Arizona graduation?

No measurement on this page says so, and this site does not imply counts it has not run. No matched-window availability series has been done for Tucson. Structurally it is a large metropolitan market with a wide spread of inventory, so the city as a whole running out is unlikely. The scarce thing is much narrower than that.

Then what actually is scarce?

The hotel at the ceremony. Casino Del Sol Resort shares an address with Casino Del Sol Stadium, so it is the only property that puts you at commencement rather than driving to it. One property against a graduating class is a far smaller pool than the city it sits in.

How far is the stadium from campus, really?

Far enough that they are different trips. The resort's own location page gives directions as exiting the I-19 west at Valencia Road and driving six miles west, and describes itself as about fifteen minutes from downtown Tucson — with campus on the other side of downtown from there. We have not published a campus-to-stadium drive time because we have not measured one, and the university does not publish it.

Where should we stay if the resort is full?

Downtown Tucson. It has the deepest inventory in the metro, sits close to campus for anything else you are doing, and the resort's own fifteen-minute figure applies from there. It is the compromise position and for most families it is the right one.

Is the airport area worth considering?

More than it looks. It is chain inventory with little character, but it sits south of the city on the same side as the stadium, and it prices below downtown. If you are flying in and out around the ceremony it is the least amount of driving in the whole plan.

What about Oro Valley or Marana?

Both are real markets, and both are the wrong direction — north, while the ceremony is south-west. After a 7:30 p.m. start you would be driving the length of the metro at night. They are listed on this page for completeness, not as recommendations for ceremony night.

When is the ceremony?

Friday 14 May 2027 at 7:30 p.m., confirmed on the university's own commencement site and weekday cross-checked. The university publishes it as subject to change and repeats that warning site-wide, so re-check before booking anything non-refundable.
