Midyear Commencement is Saturday, December 12, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. The Superior Stay Hotel sits a few steps from the Dome itself; the Landmark Inn, Staybridge Suites, Holiday Inn, Ramada and others serve the city. Marquette has real depth by Upper Peninsula standards — the pressure is a December sequence, not a shortage.

The closest hotel is steps from the ceremony

NMU’s Midyear Commencement is Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., in the Superior Dome.

Most pages on this site have to explain the trade between staying near campus and staying near the ceremony venue. Here they are the same place, and the Superior Stay Hotel — which opened in 2020 — sits a few steps from the Dome. For a December morning in the Upper Peninsula, the value of not having to drive to a 10:30 ceremony is worth more than it would be almost anywhere else on this site.

Beyond it, Marquette carries a real spread: the historic Landmark Inn downtown, plus Staybridge Suites, Holiday Inn, Ramada, Quality Inn, Comfort Suites and a Best Western Plus. None publishes commencement-specific terms, and none was confirmed sold out.

Two graduations, one week apart

This is the part that will not appear on any university’s page, because it involves two universities.

Marquette is the largest hotel market in the Upper Peninsula, which makes it the region’s overflow valve. Our Michigan Tech cluster names it as the only genuinely deeper market within reach of Houghton — an hour and forty minutes away, and the honest answer when the Keweenaw fills.

Michigan Tech’s own commencement is December 19, 2026. NMU’s is the 12th.

So Marquette absorbs its own graduating families on the second Saturday of December, and is the designated fallback for another university’s on the third. That is not a collision in the way two same-day ceremonies would be — the weekends are genuinely separate, and we are not going to inflate it into a crisis. It is a fortnight of sustained demand on a market that spends most of December quiet.

Ski season starts the same month

One more thing that belongs in the picture. Marquette Mountain is four miles from campus, and December is when it opens.

Marquette’s winter economy is not incidental to it — this is a city that markets itself for snow, and the ski traffic builds through exactly the weeks these two ceremonies fall in. That does not make rooms unavailable. It does mean the December hotel market here is not the off-season lull you might reasonably assume from looking at a map of the Upper Peninsula in winter.

Booked early, this is a comfortable weekend. Left late, you are bidding against a graduating class, a neighbouring university’s overflow, and the start of a ski season, in a city that has good hotels but not unlimited ones.

  • Superior Stay Hotel: Opened in 2020 and described as a few steps from the Superior Dome, which is the ceremony venue itself — the closest option to the building families are actually going to. No commencement-specific terms are published.
  • Landmark Inn: Marquette's historic downtown hotel, a short drive from campus. Listed as a genuine alternative rather than on the strength of any published graduation policy.
  • Staybridge Suites Marquette: One of several chain properties serving the city. Included because Marquette's depth, by UP standards, is the point — not because a specific policy was confirmed.

Escanaba, MICheck rooms in Escanaba, MI →75 minA live per-night count was not obtained this session. Escanaba is a separate Lake Michigan town with its own modest hotel base — a real option, and the only one within a sensible radius that our mapping tool would resolve.Generally below Marquette; not independently rate-compared this session.

This ring is short because three closer candidates would not resolve on our mapping tool: Negaunee and Ishpeming, both roughly fifteen minutes west along US-41, and Munising to the east. All three are real towns with lodging and all three failed verification, so none is listed with a coordinate we could not check — search them directly if Marquette and Escanaba are both full. Houghton, 100 minutes northwest, is deliberately not offered as a fallback either: it is a smaller market than Marquette, and on the weekend of December 19 it is hosting Michigan Tech's own commencement. Frequently asked questions

When is NMU's Midyear Commencement?

Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome, confirmed on Northern Michigan University's own commencement page.

Which hotel is genuinely closest?

The Superior Stay Hotel, which opened in 2020 and is described as a few steps from the Superior Dome — the ceremony venue itself rather than just the campus. That is an unusually short walk by the standards of this site.

Is Marquette actually tight for rooms?

Less than most towns we cover, and we would rather say so. Marquette is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula with a genuine spread of chain and independent hotels. No named property was confirmed sold out for a commencement weekend.

Then why book early at all?

Because of what else lands in the same fortnight. Michigan Tech holds its own commencement on December 19, and Marquette is the only real fallback market its families have — our [Michigan Tech cluster](/michigan-tech/sold-out-now-what/) says so directly. Marquette takes its own crowd on the 12th and someone else's on the 19th, in the month Marquette Mountain opens four miles away.

Has NMU published a spring 2027 date?

Not as of this check. Its commencement page carries the December ceremony and nothing beyond it. Check [nmu.edu/commencement](https://nmu.edu/commencement/home) directly if you are planning for a spring graduate.
