There is a spring round too

Michigan Tech’s registrar calendar carries two further ceremonies: Graduate students on Friday 30 April 2027 and Undergraduate students on Saturday 1 May 2027.

Neither has a published venue or start time. The December ceremony is in the Varsity Gym of the Student Development Complex, and that is the reasonable expectation for spring as well, but the university has not said so and this page will not.

Saturday morning in the Varsity Gym

Michigan Tech’s Fall Undergraduate Commencement is Saturday 19 December 2026 at 10:30 a.m., in the Varsity Gym of the Student Development Complex, confirmed on the university’s own commencement page. The weekday checks out: 19 December 2026 is a Saturday.

One detail worth checking against your own invitation. The Varsity Gym is not the same room as the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena, which hosted the most recently confirmed spring graduate ceremony. Both sit inside the Student Development Complex, and a family navigating from a previous visit can walk into the wrong hall.

What Michigan Tech has published, and what it has not

The university gives a date, a time and a room. It does not give a doors-open time, a ceremony length or a parking arrangement, and this page does not either.

TICKETS ARE THE EXCEPTION. Michigan Tech publishes a tickets page stating that “A ticket is required for entry” for guests, that this applies to anyone over the age of three, and that “Graduates themselves do not need tickets.” Per-ceremony allocations for the December 2026 and spring 2027 rounds had not been posted when we checked, so how many tickets each graduate receives is still open, but the requirement itself is not.

That gap is worth naming rather than papering over, because these are exactly the details a page like this is expected to supply and exactly the details that get quietly carried over from a previous year. A doors time lifted from last December looks identical to a verified one on the way in and is worth nothing on the day. If the margin matters to your travel, the university is the place to ask.

Reaching the Keweenaw in December deserves the planning

This is the part of the weekend that actually rewards attention.

Houghton sits partway up the Keweenaw Peninsula, the strip of land reaching into Lake Superior. There is no metro within an easy drive. Marquette, the nearest city of real size, is about 100 minutes southeast, and Michigan’s own tourism board puts local snowfall at roughly 180 inches a year. The third week of December sits squarely inside that.

None of which argues against coming. It argues for arriving the day before rather than the morning of. A 10:30 a.m. start leaves no useful margin for a family driving in from Marquette through overnight weather, and the Keweenaw is not a place where a late start gets made up on the road.

Spring 2027 has not been set

Michigan Tech had not published a spring 2027 commencement date when we checked.

The most recently confirmed spring ceremony was the Graduate ceremony on Friday 24 April 2026 in the MacInnes Ice Arena. It is on this page as a reference for the shape of a spring weekend, a Friday afternoon in a different venue, and not as a prediction of anything. If you are planning around a spring graduate rather than a December one, the university’s commencement page is where the real date will appear, and it is worth a look before you book.
