Saturday morning in the Varsity Gym

Michigan Tech’s Fall Undergraduate Commencement is Saturday, December 19, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., in the Varsity Gym of the Student Development Complex. The SDC opens at 8:30 a.m., and the university says the ceremony generally runs around two hours.

One detail worth checking against your own invitation: the Varsity Gym is not the same room as the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena, which hosted the most recently confirmed spring graduate ceremony. Both sit within the Student Development Complex, and a family arriving on autopilot from a previous visit can end up in the wrong hall.

Reaching the Keweenaw in December

This is the part of the weekend that deserves more planning than the ceremony does.

Houghton is partway up the Keweenaw Peninsula, the strip of land reaching into Lake Superior. There is no metro within an easy drive — Marquette, the nearest city of real size, is about an hour and three quarters southeast. Michigan’s own tourism board puts local snowfall at roughly 180 inches a year, and the third week of December sits in the middle of that.

None of which is a warning against coming. It is an argument for arriving the day before rather than the morning of. A 10:30 a.m. ceremony with doors at 8:30 leaves no useful margin for a family driving in from Marquette through overnight weather, and the Keweenaw is not a place where a delayed start can be made up on the road.

Spring 2027 has not been set

Michigan Tech had not published a spring 2027 commencement date at the time of this check.

The most recent confirmed spring ceremony was the Graduate ceremony on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the MacInnes Ice Arena.
