The on-campus Statler Hotel has zero vacancy for Commencement weekend — Cornell's own commencement office tells families not to call. Two near-campus properties still take direct bookings (Grayhaven Motel, 3-night minimum; La Tourelle Inn & Spa, by waitlist), but neither publishes a rate. Cornell's own guidance beyond that: expect to stay up to 90 miles out, in one of five named counties.

Cornell confirms its own sellout — in writing

Most of what GraduationStay verifies comes from reading between the lines of hotel policy pages. Cornell doesn’t require that. Its own Office of Commencement Events states, in writing, on its own lodging page: the Statler Hotel — the hotel on Cornell’s campus — has no vacancies for Commencement weekend, because dignitaries are staying on campus, and families are asked not to call to inquire. That’s a university confirming its own sellout, not a pattern we inferred.

What Cornell itself tells you to do next

Cornell’s commencement office doesn’t leave you guessing. Its lodging page names the exact strategy: “Commencement guests generally stay within a 90-mile radius of campus,” and it names the areas — the Fingerlakes area, and Broome (Binghamton), Cayuga (Auburn), Chemung (Elmira), Steuben (Corning), Cortland, and Onondaga (Syracuse) counties. It also points families to IthacaCommencementRentals.com for local home rentals. We’ve turned that guidance into an actual ranked, drive-time table — see sold out, now what.

The two properties still taking direct bookings

Grayhaven Motel, in Ithaca’s Inlet Valley, requires a 3-night minimum for Commencement Weekend (May 27–31, 2027 by their listing) and asks guests to book directly through their own site rather than a third party — direct bookings get priority. Rate and deposit terms aren’t published online.

La Tourelle Inn & Spa does something we haven’t seen anywhere else in this project: it doesn’t run standard reservations for commencement weekend at all. Instead, rooms are released to a graduation waitlist roughly a year in advance, with priority given to guests who’ve stayed before. You join by phone or email, giving your graduate’s class year — there’s no listed minimum stay or rate.

A third property, the Inn at Taughannock Falls, explicitly names “Cornell University graduation weekend” as a Special Event triggering its own rate and cancellation terms — but those terms are only sent in booking confirmation emails, not published. Contact the hotel directly if you want to try it.

  • Grayhaven Motel: In Inlet Valley, positioned to "skip the downtown gridlock." Rate and deposit terms aren't published online — book directly through their site, which they say they prioritize over other channels.
  • La Tourelle Inn & Spa: Doesn't take standard reservations for commencement weekend — runs its own graduation waitlist instead, releasing rooms roughly a year out and prioritizing past guests. No minimum-stay or rate published; join by phone or email with your graduate's class year.

The ring

Ring towns with drive time and typical availability
TownDrive timeTypical availabilityRate vs. epicenter
Cortland, NY37 minChecked live for the May 28-30, 2027 weekend (Google Hotels, July 2026): 287 lodging results, no sold-out signals — Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, and Fairfield Inn all showed as bookable. Closest of the five.Mainstream chain rates, not resort pricing — meaningfully under Ithaca's sold-out on-campus hotel, though we did not convert the exact figures (see note below).
Elmira / Horseheads, NY45 minChecked the same way: only ~40 results, the thinnest inventory of the five ring towns here — book this one earlier than the others if you pick it.Similar chain-hotel tier to Cortland; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Corning, NY54 min291 results as of the same July 2026 check — comparable depth to Cortland, with no sold-out signals.Same chain-hotel tier as Cortland; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Binghamton, NY62 min212 results as of the same check — a real fallback if the closer towns fill up.Same chain-hotel tier as Cortland; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Syracuse, NY69 min650 results as of the same check — deepest inventory of the five by a wide margin, plus its own airport.Same chain-hotel tier as Cortland; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).

All five are also named directly by Cornell's own commencement office as recommended overflow counties. Availability was checked live via Google Hotels for the exact commencement weekend in July 2026; the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so we're reporting confirmed inventory and named hotels rather than a converted dollar figure we can't stand behind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book the Statler Hotel for Cornell graduation?

No. Cornell's own commencement office states the hotel "does not have vacancies for Commencement weekend" because many dignitaries are staying on campus, and directly asks people not to call about overnight accommodations. It still runs its regular restaurants that weekend — just no rooms.

When should I book for Cornell graduation?

As early as you can. The Statler is already unavailable, and La Tourelle Inn & Spa doesn't take normal reservations for commencement weekend at all — it runs a waitlist that releases rooms roughly a year out. If you want Cornell's own on-campus housing, reservations open in early January of the commencement year.

Does Cornell graduation collide with a holiday weekend?

Yes. Commencement Weekend 2027 runs Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30 — immediately before Memorial Day (Monday, May 31, 2027). Expect graduation demand and holiday-weekend demand to stack across the same stretch, both in the epicenter and in the ring towns.
