The University of Michigan's own commencement pages warn that "hotels and restaurants in and around Ann Arbor book up far in advance." The Kensington Ann Arbor (7 minutes from the stadium) runs a 2-night prepaid minimum with a non-refundable-after-deadline policy. Unlike most campuses here, Ann Arbor has real metro overflow — Detroit's suburbs are 20-30 minutes away, dramatically cheaper.

The university says the quiet part out loud

Most campuses leave families to discover the scarcity themselves. Michigan doesn’t. A U-M commencement-planning page states plainly: “Hotels and restaurants in and around Ann Arbor book up far in advance of Commencement weekend, so please plan accordingly.” That’s a direct warning from the university, not a pattern we inferred from policy pages.

What that warning looks like in practice

The Kensington Ann Arbor, 2.4 miles (a 7-minute drive) from Michigan Stadium, runs a 2-night minimum with the full deposit due at booking and the reservation becoming non-refundable after a cancellation deadline set a few months out. It offers complimentary parking for guests using the university’s free shuttle to the Big House — worth knowing given commencement-day road and lot pressure.

Aventura Ann Arbor doesn’t have 2027 terms published yet — reservations open in fall 2026, and the property is currently only taking email signups for early access.

Guest reports at other Ann Arbor properties describe steep markups: one guest paid over $500/night at a Wyndham property for graduation weekend, and Graduate Ann Arbor’s graduation-weekend pricing has been described by guests as excessive relative to its normal rates. We haven’t independently confirmed exact current numbers for either — treat this as a strong, consistent pattern rather than a guaranteed figure.

The one advantage Ann Arbor has that most campuses don’t

Every other campus cluster on this site is built around genuine isolation — the nearest real alternative is a real drive away. Ann Arbor is different: Detroit’s western suburbs sit 20-30 minutes out, with their own independent hotel markets that don’t reprice for U-M’s graduation weekend the way Ann Arbor’s own hotels do. That changes the strategy here from “find any room” to “price arbitrage” — see sold out, now what.

Ypsilanti, MI12 minChecked live for the May 6-8, 2027 weekend (Google Hotels, July 2026): 902 results, the deepest inventory of the four and the closest — structurally different from this project's other rings, since Ypsilanti is a full neighboring city with its own hotel stock, not a remote escape valve.Mainstream chain tier (Sonesta, Holiday Inn Express) plus extended-stay options; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Plymouth, MI27 min697 results as of the same check — comparably deep, mostly IHG-brand chain properties.Similar chain tier to Ypsilanti; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Detroit Metro Airport (Romulus), MI29 min445 results as of the same check, the thinnest of the four — airport-hotel inventory specifically, useful if you're flying in rather than driving.Spans budget (Travelodge) to a 4-star Autograph Collection property; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).
Livonia, MI30 min593 results as of the same check — a real fallback, mostly IHG-brand chain properties.Similar chain tier to Ypsilanti and Plymouth; not converted from the local currency shown (see note below).

Availability was checked live via Google Hotels for the exact commencement weekend in July 2026; the tool returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so we're reporting confirmed inventory and hotel tier rather than a converted dollar figure we can't stand behind.

Frequently asked questions

Does the University of Michigan warn families about hotel availability?

Yes, directly. A U-M commencement-planning page states: "Hotels and restaurants in and around Ann Arbor book up far in advance of Commencement weekend, so please plan accordingly." That's the university itself confirming the scarcity, not our own inference.

How much more do Ann Arbor hotels charge for graduation weekend?

Guest reports describe rates running several times higher than normal — one guest paid over $500/night at a Wyndham property, and Graduate Ann Arbor's graduation pricing has been described as excessive relative to normal rates. We haven't independently confirmed exact current figures for every property; treat this as a strong pattern, not a guaranteed number.

Is there a cheaper alternative close to Ann Arbor?

Yes — and this is what makes Michigan different from most campuses in this project. Ypsilanti is 12 minutes away with its own, dramatically cheaper hotel stock, and Detroit's western suburbs (Plymouth, Livonia, the airport corridor) are 25-30 minutes out. See our sold-out guide.
