Eight hotels, and three graduations a year
Most clusters on this site describe a town that fills once a year. Rexburg fills three times.
BYU-Idaho runs a three-track continuous-enrollment calendar and graduates in Winter, Spring and Fall. That is genuinely unusual, and it changes the advice, because the town’s hotel base does not get a long quiet stretch to recover in.
The base itself, checked live on 12 August 2026 for the December window:

Eight properties for a town of 40,000 hosting more than 20,000 students. Local hotel guidance says rates “reliably spike” on BYU-Idaho commencement dates and recommends booking four to eight weeks ahead or more.
Counting back from 17 December, eight weeks is late October and four is mid-November. If you are reading this in August, you are early, which on this cluster is the whole advantage.
Idaho Falls is the fallback, and it is a good one
Thirty minutes south on US-20, 39 bookable properties, a full chain-hotel base and a regional airport attached. If you are flying in, there is a reasonable argument for basing yourself there regardless.
Pocatello at an hour holds 31 and is usually the cheapest of the three.
One option tested and deliberately left off the ladder: Driggs, over the Teton pass, returned 44 properties. That number is misleading. Driggs is a ski market in December, so its inventory is priced and occupied by people who are not attending a graduation, and getting there means an hour over a mountain pass in winter. It is the wrong road to be on at 11 a.m. on a ceremony morning.
Book two nights
The Thursday is not the whole event.
Wednesday carries Grad Kickoff at the University Store, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Grad Night with the university president, 6 to 7 p.m., doors at 5:30. BYU-Idaho invites graduates and their guests to Grad Night, so it is a family event rather than a student one.
Thursday runs convocations at 10 a.m., commencement at 12:45 p.m., then further convocations at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Which one your graduate is in decides whether you leave campus at eleven in the morning or six in the evening.
That combination, a Wednesday evening reception plus a Thursday that can end at six, makes two nights the sensible default. The logistics page has the full college-by-college split.
Winter in eastern Idaho
Worth saying because it is not obvious to everyone booking from out of state. Rexburg sits at about 4,850 feet in the upper Snake River valley, and 17 December is deep winter. US-20 between Idaho Falls and Rexburg is a good road but it is an exposed one, and thirty minutes is a fair-weather figure.
If you are staying in Idaho Falls and the ceremony is at 12:45, that is not a tight schedule. If your graduate has the 10 a.m. convocation, leave more room than the map suggests.
What is not established
BYU-Idaho’s December programme is published, and the logistics page carries it: commencement at 12:45 p.m., convocations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., no tickets required.
No named Rexburg hotel was confirmed sold out for the December window, and no commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy was verified at the Hampton Inn or anywhere else. The “rates reliably spike” language is local hotel guidance rather than a rate we recorded ourselves.
Drive times are fair-weather estimates. December in eastern Idaho is not fair weather.
