Fort Hays State holds its fall commencement on Friday 11 December 2026 at Gross Memorial Coliseum, with two on-campus ceremonies split by college: 8:30 a.m. Central for the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship and the College of Education, and 11:00 a.m. for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics. An 8:30 a.m. start is the single most useful fact on this page, because it means the night you need is the Thursday. Spring 2027 runs across Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May, also at Gross Memorial Coliseum, and that pair is published on the registrar's academic calendar rather than on the commencement page. We measured the December window and Hays is not tight: sixteen properties were bookable, which is the top of its own control range.

The 8:30 a.m. start decides your trip
Fort Hays State runs two on-campus ceremonies on Friday 11 December 2026, and the first one begins at 8:30 a.m. Central.
| Ceremony | Colleges |
|---|---|
| 8:30 a.m. CT | Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship; College of Education |
| 11:00 a.m. CT | Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health and Behavioral Sciences; Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics |
Both are at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The university also runs virtual celebrations at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Central for graduate and undergraduate degrees.
An 8:30 a.m. ceremony in a town most families reach by car changes which night they book. Hays is roughly three and a half hours from Wichita, four and a half from Kansas City and five from Denver. A family that books Friday night for a Friday morning ceremony has booked the night after the event. The night that matters is Thursday 10 December.
That sounds obvious written down. It is the single most common booking error we see on morning-ceremony clusters, and Fort Hays State is the earliest morning start on this site.
Spring 2027 is published, on the page nobody opens
Fort Hays State graduates again across Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027, at the same venue.
Those dates were not on the commencement page when we checked on 16 August 2026. That page carried the December round in full and then said, for spring, that “Additional commencement information will be posted as it becomes available.”
The registrar’s Spring Semester 2027 academic calendar had already published both days, with the venue attached:
May 14 - Semester ends / University Commencement Exercises, Gross Memorial Coliseum
May 15 - University Commencement Exercises, Gross Memorial Coliseum
A university is not one publisher. The registrar, the commencement office and the individual colleges keep their own schedules, and none of them is authoritative for the others. Anyone who checked only the commencement page in August 2026 would have written down that Fort Hays State had not published a spring 2027 date. It had.
What the registrar calendar does not carry is the spring start times or the college-to-ceremony split. Two spring days with no published split means a family with a May graduate cannot yet tell which of the two days it needs. If that matters to your travel, the fall pattern is not a safe guess: it is a fall pattern.
We measured whether Hays fills, and it does not
This is where a lodging site is supposed to tell you to hurry. The measurement says otherwise, so here it is.
Five matched two-night searches in Hays, run in one session on 16 August 2026, two adults and one room, identical window length throughout:
| Window | Bookable properties |
|---|---|
| 19 to 21 November | 15 |
| 3 to 5 December | 15 |
| 10 to 12 December (commencement) | 16 |
| 17 to 19 December | 16 |
| 14 to 16 January 2027 | 16 |
The commencement window is at the top of its own control range, not below it. Sixteen of the town’s sixteen bookable properties still had availability four months out.
That is not an outlier. Across this site, thirteen of fourteen December rounds measured flat, and the pattern holds here. December graduations do not squeeze their towns the way May graduations do. Booking early for this ceremony buys you choice and rate, not a room you would otherwise lose.
The real constraint is the ring, and the map lies about it
Hays carries sixteen bookable properties, which is genuinely healthy for a town this size. What sits behind it is the problem.
| Town | Drive time | Properties |
|---|---|---|
| Russell, KS | 39 min | 7 |
| WaKeeney, KS | 38 min | 3 |
| Great Bend, KS | 76 min | 9 |
| Salina, KS | 106 min | 28 |
Inside forty minutes of Hays, in both directions along I-70, there are ten properties in total. Great Bend is the first town off the interstate with a hotel base of its own, and it measures 76 minutes by road rather than the hour its distance suggests, because the route leaves the interstate for two-lane highway. Salina, at an hour and three quarters, is the first genuinely independent market east.
So the advice inverts the usual shape. You are unlikely to lose a room in Hays. If you do lose it, you are not moving one exit down the interstate. You are choosing between three properties in WaKeeney and a two-hundred-mile round trip.
Two ring towns were checked and left out rather than published. Ellis, 19 minutes west, returned exactly the same property count as Hays itself, which for a town of about two thousand people means the search resolved to the wider market rather than to Ellis. Plainville returned no count at all. Neither result tells you anything about those towns, so neither is in the table.

Frequently asked questions
When is Fort Hays State's graduation?
Friday 11 December 2026 for the fall round, at Gross Memorial Coliseum, with ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Central. Spring 2027 runs Friday 14 and Saturday 15 May 2027 at the same venue. We checked the weekdays: 11 December 2026 is a Friday, 14 May 2027 is a Friday and 15 May 2027 is a Saturday.
Which night should we book?
Thursday 10 December. The first ceremony starts at 8:30 a.m. Central, and guests are normally seated well before that, so a family driving in on the Friday morning is either setting off before dawn or missing it. Booking Thursday and Friday nights covers both sittings and the drive home.
Which ceremony does our graduate attend?
For December it is published and it depends on the college. The 8:30 a.m. ceremony covers the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship and the College of Education. The 11:00 a.m. ceremony covers Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics. For spring 2027 no split has been published, and two spring days with no split means you cannot yet tell which day you need.
Why does the commencement page not show the spring dates?
Because at the time we checked it had not posted them. On 16 August 2026 fhsu.edu/commencement carried the fall round in full and then the line "Additional commencement information will be posted as it becomes available" for spring. The registrar's Spring Semester 2027 academic calendar had already published both spring dates with the venue. Two offices, two publishing schedules, and the fuller answer on the one most people never open.
Will Hays be sold out?
Not on the evidence. We ran five matched two-night searches in Hays on 16 August 2026 and the December commencement window returned sixteen bookable properties against control weekends of 15, 15, 16 and 16. The ceremony window sits at the top of that range rather than below it. The constraint on this cluster is what lies beyond Hays, not Hays itself.
What if Hays is full anyway?
The ring is thin and the drive times are longer than a map suggests. Russell is 39 minutes east with seven properties and WaKeeney 38 minutes west with three. Great Bend is 76 minutes by road, not the hour the distance implies, because the route drops off I-70 onto two-lane highway. The first market with real depth is Salina, 101 miles and about an hour and three quarters east.
