START HERE, BECAUSE GCU'S OWN ADVICE IS TO WAIT. It "strongly recommends that graduation candidates and guests avoid securing travel preparations until the graduation candidate has registered and received a confirmation email acknowledging ceremony participation." Registration is by emailed invitation to eligible candidates, not automatic. GCU also runs TWO SEPARATE COMMENCEMENT SERIES and they are out of phase, so which one you are attending decides everything. The ONLINE AND COHORT round is published: six ceremonies across WEDNESDAY 14 TO FRIDAY 16 OCTOBER 2026, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day, in Global Credit Union Arena on campus. The TRADITIONAL round for on-campus students is THURSDAY 17 AND FRIDAY 18 DECEMBER 2026, four ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., split by college. Neither series has announced spring 2027. Guests need general admission tickets, the arena seats about 6,500, and GCU asks you to allow 30 to 45 minutes for parking and walking in on top of your drive.

GCU tells you not to book yet

Most universities on this site are a race to book before the town fills. GCU is the opposite, and it says so in its own words:

It is strongly recommended that graduation candidates and guests avoid securing travel preparations until the graduation candidate has registered and received a confirmation email acknowledging ceremony participation.

That is not boilerplate. Registration at GCU is by emailed invitation to eligible candidates rather than something a graduate opts into, and eligibility turns on the degree being posted or registered through completion, not on credit hours. A family that books in August for a graduate who turns out not to be eligible has bought a weekend in Phoenix.

It is also unusually cheap advice to follow here. Phoenix is a metropolitan market of several million people with an airport nine miles from the arena. Waiting a few weeks costs you far less than it would in Oxford or Ithaca.

There are two commencements, and they are months apart

This is the thing most likely to send someone to the wrong city in the wrong month.

Series Who it is for Spring 2026 Next round
Online and cohort Distance and cohort students 28 April to 1 May 2026, held 14 to 16 October 2026
Traditional On-campus students 22 to 24 April 2026, held 17 and 18 December 2026

Your graduate’s invitation email names which one. GCU emailed the traditional invitations on 17 September. The October online and cohort schedule comes first below, then the December traditional one.

The December traditional schedule

Four ceremonies over two days, by college, all in Arizona time:

When Colleges
Thu 17 Dec, 10 a.m. Engineering and Technology · Natural Sciences
Thu 17 Dec, 4 p.m. Arts and Media · Education · Humanities and Social Sciences
Fri 18 Dec, 10 a.m. Colangelo College of Business · Theology
Fri 18 Dec, 4 p.m. Engineering and Technology · Natural Sciences · Nursing and Health Care Professions

Engineering and Technology and Natural Sciences each appear twice; GCU’s page does not say how their graduates are split between the two. Check-in times, the ceremony agendas and the parking plan for December are not published yet, and GCU says to check back. Its guest information already applies: guests need general admission tickets for Global Credit Union Arena.

The October schedule, and which ceremony is yours

Six ceremonies over three days, split by college and degree level. All times are Arizona time, which does not observe daylight saving.

When Colleges
Wed 14 Oct, 10 a.m. Humanities and Social Sciences (Doctoral and Master)
Wed 14 Oct, 4 p.m. Doctoral Studies · Arts and Media · Humanities and Social Sciences (Bachelor) · Theology
Thu 15 Oct, 10 a.m. Engineering and Technology · Natural Sciences · Nursing and Health Care Professions (Bachelor)
Thu 15 Oct, 4 p.m. Colangelo College of Business
Fri 16 Oct, 10 a.m. Education (Bachelor) · Nursing and Health Care Professions (Doctoral and Master)
Fri 16 Oct, 4 p.m. Education (Master)

10 a.m. ceremonies: graduate check-in 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., doors open 8:00 a.m., ceremony runs to about 11:30.

4 p.m. ceremonies: graduate check-in 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., doors open 2:00 p.m., ceremony runs to about 5:30.

Each one lasts about an hour and a half. Guests are asked to be seated at least 30 minutes before the start. There is no rehearsal, and graduates are asked to arrive already wearing cap and gown.

Both the schedule and the dates were checked twice, on the commencement page and again on GCU’s own Fall 2026 parking instructions, which are headed “Online & Cohort Ceremonies, October 14 – 16”.

A 6,500-seat arena, and tickets to get in

Global Credit Union Arena is on campus at 3300 West Camelback Road, and the venue’s own site describes it as seating about 6,500.

Set that against a university with well over 100,000 twelve-month undergraduates and it explains the whole shape of the weekend: guests need general admission tickets, graduates are seated by degree programme on the arena floor, and the round is split six ways across three days rather than held once.

What you cannot bring, and where you cannot leave it

A clear bag policy is enforced, with metal detectors and bag checks on entry. The line that catches families out is the one after it: there is no storage for personal belongings. Whatever you cannot take in has to go back to the car.

Prohibited: strollers, wagons and car seats; balloons, flags and banners; wrapped packages or gifts; noisemakers; alcohol and glass bottles; weapons of any kind; outside food unless medically necessary.

Allowed: sealed bottled water, and service dogs. The first-floor concession stand is open. If you need a clear bag, GCU sells them on campus at the Lope Shop in Building 24.

The stroller rule is the one worth planning around if anyone is bringing a small child to a 10 a.m. ceremony.

The drive is the part people underestimate

GCU publishes its own commute bands, and they are the numbers to plan on rather than the map distance:

From GCU’s estimate
West Valley about 20 minutes
Scottsdale and the Northeast Valley 30 to 45 minutes
Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler (East Valley) 45 minutes to an hour

Then add GCU’s own allowance of 30 to 45 minutes for parking and walking into the arena. For a 10 a.m. ceremony with check-in from 8 a.m., a hotel in Mesa means leaving at roughly half past six.

Parking is the 33rd Avenue garage at 3300 West Camelback Road, beside the arena, with the 31st Avenue garage at 3050 West Camelback as overflow. Northbound on I-17, exit at Camelback Road to 33rd Avenue; southbound, exit at Bethany Home Road to 35th Avenue, south to Camelback, then east.

Phoenix police direct traffic on the day and may send you to a different garage depending on how the lots fill. Accessible parking is in the 33rd Avenue garage with the plaque displayed. Cars left on private property outside designated areas may be towed.

If you are arriving by rideshare, the drop-off and pick-up point is 3000 West Colter Street, about 0.4 miles from the arena, so build in the walk at both ends.

One more thing GCU flags itself: ground classes are in session during the October round, so the campus is busier than the ceremony alone would explain.

Where to stay around it

Phoenix is not short of rooms, so the question is which side of the city you want to be on rather than whether anything is left. Our GCU where-to-stay page works through the areas against those drive times, including GCU’s own hotel, which is 0.9 miles from the arena rather than at it.

What we checked

GCU’s traditional and online/cohort commencement pages were read at source on 28 August 2026 and again on 13 October 2026, rendered in a browser rather than taken from flat text, because the two pages interleave a held spring schedule with the next round and a text-only reading merges them. The Fall 2026 parking PDF was read the same day and independently confirms the October dates. Every weekday above was verified.

Not published, and each a real absence: any 2027 date for either series; the check-in times, ceremony agendas and parking arrangements for the December traditional round; and any published commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy at a Phoenix hotel.

Frequently asked questions

When is GCU graduation 2027?

Not published, for either series. GCU announces each round only "shortly after" the preceding one, so spring 2027 for the online and cohort series is expected shortly after the October 2026 ceremonies, and the traditional spring round follows its own winter one. Nothing on GCU's commencement pages carries a 2027 date as at 13 October 2026, and this page will not infer one from the 2026 pattern.

Which GCU commencement am I going to?

There are two, and they are separate events months apart. The TRADITIONAL series is for GCU's on-campus students; its spring round ran 22 to 24 April 2026 and its winter round is 17 and 18 December 2026. The ONLINE AND COHORT series is for distance and cohort students; its spring round ran 28 April to 1 May 2026 and its next round is 14 to 16 October 2026. Your graduate's invitation email says which one they are in. If you book off the wrong series you will be in Phoenix in the wrong month.

Should I book flights and a hotel now?

GCU says no, and it is worth taking seriously. Its wording is to "avoid securing travel preparations until the graduation candidate has registered and received a confirmation email acknowledging ceremony participation." Eligibility depends on the degree being posted or registered through completion rather than on credit hours, so it is not guaranteed in advance. Phoenix is a metro of several million with deep hotel supply, so waiting costs you far less here than it would in a small college town.

Do guests need tickets?

Yes. GCU states that guests must have general admission tickets to enter Global Credit Union Arena, and asks all ticketed guests to be seated at least 30 minutes before the ceremony starts. The arena seats about 6,500, which is why a university of GCU's size runs six ceremonies across three days rather than one.

What can I take into the arena?

Very little, and there is nowhere to leave it. A clear bag policy is enforced, metal detectors and bag checks are in use, and GCU states plainly that there is no storage for personal belongings. Prohibited items include strollers, wagons and car seats, balloons, flags and banners, wrapped packages or gifts, noisemakers, glass bottles, alcohol and outside food. Sealed bottled water is allowed and service dogs are permitted. If you need one, clear bags are sold on campus at the Lope Shop in Building 24.

How early should I leave for the ceremony?

GCU asks for 30 to 45 minutes on top of your journey, purely for parking and walking in. Its own published commute bands are 45 minutes to an hour from the East Valley (Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler), 30 to 45 minutes from Scottsdale and about 20 minutes from the West Valley. For a 10 a.m. ceremony with check-in from 8 a.m., an East Valley hotel means leaving around 6:30.

Where do we park?

The 33rd Avenue garage at 3300 West Camelback Road, next to the arena, with the 31st Avenue garage at 3050 West Camelback Road as overflow. Accessible parking is in the 33rd Avenue garage, with the plaque displayed so traffic officers can direct you. Phoenix police direct traffic during the ceremony and may send you to an alternate location depending on how the lots fill. Vehicles left on private property outside designated areas may be towed.

Can we use a rideshare instead?

Yes, and the drop-off is not at the arena door. GCU's rideshare pick-up and drop-off point is 3000 West Colter Street, about 0.4 miles from the arena, so allow the walk at both ends of the day.

Is the campus quiet that week?

No, and GCU says so itself. Ground student classes are in session during the October round, so campus traffic is heavier than the ceremony alone would suggest. Around the spring round resident students are also moving out, which GCU flags separately.
