Illinois State holds several commencement ceremonies each December and May in CEFCU Arena, one or two per college, and publishes the full schedule months ahead. The next is on Saturday, December 12, 2026; the spring round is Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2027. There are no tickets and no limit on guests, so seating is first come, first served from the moment doors open, an hour before each ceremony. Strollers are not allowed.

No tickets, so the early arrivals get the good seats

Most universities ration seats. Illinois State does the opposite. There are no tickets for commencement and, in the university’s own words, no limit to the number of guests who may attend. Bring the grandparents, the cousins and the neighbours.

The trade-off is how seating works. Every seat in CEFCU Arena is first come, first served, and the doors open one hour before each ceremony. For a large family that wants to sit together, or anyone who wants a clear view of the stage, arriving when the doors open is the plan. Arriving at the start time is a gamble on what is left.

Every graduate’s name is read as they cross the stage and collect their diploma cover, so there is a moment worth seeing clearly for every family in the building.

A schedule you can plan around now

Illinois State publishes its commencement schedule months ahead, and in full: which colleges walk at which ceremony, on which day, at what time. It is all in the table above.

Each ceremony covers one or two colleges, and the College of Arts and Sciences is large enough to be split by major across two ceremonies in the spring. Look for your graduate’s major in the notes under each ceremony if they are in Arts and Sciences. Everyone else only needs their college.

Two details from the spring round are worth noticing early:

  • A Friday ceremony at 8 p.m. Ceremonies in the spring run about two and a half hours, so an 8 p.m. start ends late in the evening. That is not a drive home for most families.
  • A Saturday ceremony at 6 p.m. The College of Business walks last, in the early evening, on the second day.

Winter ceremonies are shorter, about two hours, and both fall on the same Saturday.

Arena rules: travel light, and no strollers

CEFCU Arena’s graduation rules are strict about bags. Bags, backpacks and boxes are refused, with exceptions only for small purses, small camera bags, diaper bags and medical equipment. Strollers are not allowed at all. Nor are outside food, inflated balloons, large signs or banners that block the view, or megaphones and other noisemakers.

One rule matters for young families: only the graduate may cross the stage. Illinois State says infants or children of any age cannot be carried across as the graduate collects their diploma cover, so a parent who is also graduating needs someone in the stands to hold the baby.

Before and after: where to meet

Graduates check in at Horton Field House, in cap and gown, an hour before their ceremony. Guests and children are not allowed in the field house, so this is where families and graduates split up.

After the ceremony, graduates leave the arena by the north-east ramp near the Turner Hall parking lot and Horton Field House, and they cannot go back into the arena or the field house. Illinois State’s advice is to agree a meeting point outside the arena in advance. With several ceremonies a day, the next crowd will be arriving as yours leaves.

No August ceremony

Illinois State does not hold commencement in August. A student who finishes over the summer walks in May, alongside the spring graduates.

Where to sleep

Bloomington-Normal is two towns joined together, and its hotels are split between a small cluster by campus and larger groups at the interstate exits.

The two closest are in Uptown Normal, the walkable town centre next to campus: the Hyatt Place, with 114 rooms, and the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center across the street, with 228. Both are under a mile from CEFCU Arena in a straight line. Neither publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule.

After that, the choice is at the interstates. There is a group at I-55 exit 165 on the north side of Normal, including a 158-room Holiday Inn, and a larger block of chain hotels at the I-55 and I-74 junction on the Bloomington side, about ten minutes’ drive from the arena. Downtown Bloomington is closer still. Beyond the twin cities, Peoria is the nearest full city, about 45 minutes west.

Our pressure grade for Bloomington-Normal is a judgement from the room counts, not a count of what was left on a ceremony weekend. With no guest limit, a single spring ceremony can bring more families to town than Uptown Normal has rooms, which is why we would book early for a Friday-evening or Saturday-evening ceremony.
