Kent State holds Kent Campus commencement in December, May and August. The next ceremonies are tentatively on Friday, December 18, 2026 at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, with times posted after the RSVP closes. Each graduate gets six guest tickets; everyone two and older needs one, and none are printed at the door. Seating is general admission, mostly bleachers. Strollers are not allowed. Kent has only about 380 hotel rooms within three miles.

The room problem comes before the ticket problem
Kent is a small city with a big university in it, and the arithmetic of a graduation weekend there is tight. Within about three miles of the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center there are five hotels, and between them they publish roughly 380 rooms. Kent State graduates thousands of students a year across its ceremonies. The overflow goes to Streetsboro, Ravenna and Cuyahoga Falls, a quarter of an hour or more away, and to Akron after that.
That makes the order of operations different from most campuses. Book a room first, on a rate you can cancel, and sort out the details afterwards.
The difficulty is that the details arrive late. Kent State describes its dates as tentative and publishes ceremony times only after the graduates’ RSVP window has closed. A family that waits for the exact time before booking is waiting until a few weeks before the ceremony, in a town that has little to spare.
Six tickets, downloaded, never printed at the door
Each graduate gets six guest tickets. Everyone aged two and older needs one to get into the ceremony venue, including a toddler. Tickets become available to download a few weeks ahead, and Kent State is explicit that it will not print tickets on site. If a guest turns up without one on their phone or on paper, there is no box office to fix it.
For anyone who cannot get a ticket, Kent State runs a live simulcast of the ceremony for guests without tickets, and the ceremonies are streamed online.
Bleachers, general admission, and a short list of banned items
The MAC Center is a sports arena, and most of its seats are bleachers. Seating is general admission. Guests who need a chair with a back, room for a wheelchair, or any other accommodation should see an usher, and for accessible seating Kent State asks guests to arrive at least an hour before the start; those reserved areas cannot be guaranteed once the ceremony begins. A windshield drop-off permit for guests who need to be let out near the door is available from the commencement site.
Everyone and every bag is inspected at the door. The prohibited list is worth reading before you leave the hotel:
- Strollers, which catches out families with small children.
- Bags larger than 14 by 14 inches.
- Large signs, laser pointers, whistles and noisemakers.
- Animals other than service animals, and weapons of any kind.
Smoking is banned, and Kent State counts e-cigarettes as smoking.
Ceremonies in exam week
Kent State’s commencements sit inside the final examination period. In December the ceremonies fall at the end of finals week; in spring, the academic calendar spreads commencements across four days at the end of exam week, from the Thursday to the Sunday. For a family, that means the graduate may still be sitting exams in the days just before the ceremony, and may not be free to meet you until afterwards.
Kent State also holds a summer commencement in August, which is less common. The dates for every round are in the table above, and all of them are marked tentative because Kent State marks them that way.
Regional campus students graduate at their own campus ceremonies, not at the MAC Center.
Parking and getting in
All campus lots are open on commencement day, accessible parking is available, and shuttles run to and from the MAC Center. The GPS address Kent State gives is 1025 Risman Drive. In December, the roads of north-east Ohio can be snowy, so leave extra time for any drive in from outside Kent.
Where to sleep
The closest hotel is the Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center in downtown Kent, with 94 rooms and suites, under a mile from the arena. Kent State’s own guest page points visitors to it, and a downtown address means restaurants within walking distance after the ceremony.
The other four are at the I-76 exit on the south side of town, about two and a half miles from the arena: a Holiday Inn Express, a Hampton Inn, a Days Inn and a Super 8. None of the five publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule.
Beyond Kent, the nearest groups are Ravenna to the east and Streetsboro to the north, both about a quarter of an hour by road, with Streetsboro’s cluster at the Ohio Turnpike the larger. Cuyahoga Falls and Hudson are around twenty minutes out, and downtown Akron, the nearest city-sized market, about 25 minutes.
No availability series has been run for Kent, so treat the ring table’s blanks as unknowns rather than good news. On supply alone, this is a tight market for a university of this size, and we would book as soon as the dates are in the calendar.
