Ohio State Graduation Hotels: The Campus Inn Runs a Lottery

The campus hotel does not take bookings, it draws names

Almost every scarcity story on this site is about being early. Ohio State’s is about being lucky.

The Blackwell Inn and Pfahl Conference Center sits directly across from Ohio Stadium and is the only hotel actually on campus. For graduation weekend it does not accept reservations in the ordinary way. It runs a lottery: you submit an application by a posted deadline, and rooms are awarded by random drawing.

That inverts the usual advice completely. Refreshing a booking page at midnight does nothing here. What matters is knowing the application window exists and submitting inside it, because someone who applies on the last day has exactly the same odds as someone who applied on the first.

What the lottery actually requires

A recent cycle closed applications roughly two months before the ceremony and carried a two-night minimum, taken either as Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday.

The pool is also smaller than it looks. The Blackwell has 151 guestrooms and suites in total, and not all of them are released for graduation weekend.

Ohio State had not published 2027-specific deadlines at this check, which makes the lottery page the single most useful thing to watch on this cluster. Miss the window and the mechanism is closed to you regardless of budget.

Two ceremonies, two venues, two different scales

Ohio State publishes its ceremony calendar years ahead, and it is worth reading the venue as well as the date.

Autumn Commencement is 2:00 p.m. on Sunday 20 December 2026 at the Schottenstein Center. Indoors, arena-sized, and the near round.

Spring is 12:00 p.m. on Sunday 9 May 2027 at Ohio Stadium. Outdoors, and vastly larger.

The university notes that times and locations remain subject to change. The practical difference for lodging is scale rather than location, since both venues are on campus: a stadium ceremony pulls more people into the same Columbus hotel market than an arena ceremony does. If you have a choice of rounds, December is the easier one to book around.

Twenty-one minutes to seventeen hundred rooms

Columbus is a real metro and the fallback here is unusually comfortable.

Dublin is about 21 minutes out and returned 1,724 properties on a live check, with nothing flagged sold out. It is a genuine independent suburb with its own business base rather than a strip of highway hotels, and for most families it is simply the answer.

Newark is 48 minutes and returned 396. It is a separate small city and the reserve if Dublin and the closer Columbus options are gone.

There is also Graduate Columbus in the Short North Arts District, a short drive from campus, with no published graduation-specific policy we could find.

What we checked, and what we could not

The lottery mechanism, the two-night minimum and the application timing come from the Blackwell’s own graduation-lottery page. The ceremony dates, times and venues come from Ohio State’s own future-dates calendar, with both Sundays verified against the calendar.

What we could not establish: the 2027 lottery deadline, how many rooms enter the draw, and any published policy at Graduate Columbus. The availability tool also returned prices in a non-US currency by IP geolocation, so the ring towns are reported as confirmed inventory rather than a dollar comparison.
