Suffolk University's commencement weekend is Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, 2027, with the Law School ceremony on the Sunday. Which day the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sawyer Business School walk is not published yet. Last round all three ceremonies were held at Leader Bank Pavilion, a tented venue on the Seaport waterfront about a mile and a half from campus, and each Sawyer or CAS graduate had four guaranteed guest tickets.

The ceremony is on the harbour, not on campus
Families who know Suffolk from move-in day know a downtown campus around Beacon Hill and Tremont Street. Commencement is somewhere else. Last round every ceremony was held at Leader Bank Pavilion, a tented concert venue on the Seaport waterfront, about a mile and a half from the campus by road.
That changes the weekend more than most families expect. The question is not how close your hotel is to Suffolk but how close it is to the pavilion, and the two are in different parts of the city. It also means dressing for the water. Suffolk’s own advice is that the waterfront can be cooler than the rest of Boston, especially into the evening, that graduates line up and process outdoors in their robes before the ceremony moves under the tent, and that guests may want to bring a blanket.
Three ceremonies and a quick turnaround
Last round Suffolk ran three ceremonies on a single Sunday, back to back in the same pavilion: the Sawyer Business School in the morning, the College of Arts and Sciences early in the afternoon, and the Law School in the early evening. Undergraduate and graduate students of each school walked together. Each ceremony lasted about two hours, doors opened an hour before the start, and because the gap between ceremonies was short, everyone had to leave the pavilion as soon as their ceremony ended.
The scale is modest by Boston standards. The College of Arts and Sciences alone awarded several hundred degrees last round, and the full undergraduate class was a little over a thousand, which is why one pavilion could hold all three ceremonies in a day.
The coming spring looks slightly different on paper. Suffolk’s academic calendar calls it a commencement weekend spread over a Saturday and a Sunday, and the Law School calendar places its own ceremony on the Sunday. Which day the other two schools take is not announced yet, so a family planning a single night may need to plan for two.
Four tickets, a lottery and a clear bag
Seats are the scarce thing here, not hotel rooms. Last round each graduate of the Sawyer Business School or the College of Arts and Sciences had four guaranteed guest tickets, and each Law graduate had ten. Suffolk sets those numbers from the size of the pavilion and the number of graduates expected, and runs a lottery for extra tickets that it explains to students by email. Graduates and children under three need no ticket. Lost tickets cannot be replaced, and anyone who wins an extra ticket collects it from a will-call table beside the main entrance.
The bag rule catches people out. The pavilion admits only clear plastic or vinyl totes up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches and small clutches of about 6 by 9 inches; diaper bags and medical bags are the exceptions. Graduates have to hand their belongings to a guest before they go to the robing area, so one clear tote per family is the practical answer.
For relatives who cannot travel, Suffolk webcasts every ceremony live from its commencement page, with no link or invitation needed.
Seaport or downtown
Boston does not run short of hotel rooms the way a college town does. The choice is which side of the city to sleep on.
- The Seaport, on foot to the pavilion. The Hyatt Place stands across the street from it. Within about a mile are the Renaissance on Congress Street, the Seaport Hotel at the World Trade Center, the Westin on Summer Street and the Omni, which with over a thousand rooms is the largest of them. For a ceremony with doors opening at a set time and almost no parking, walking over from one of these is the easiest morning.
- Downtown, by the campus. HotelGuides lists about 30 hotels within three-quarters of a mile of Suffolk, from the Omni Parker House on School Street to smaller places on Beacon Hill. This side suits a weekend built around the campus, a celebratory dinner in the old city and a short ride to the waterfront for the ceremony itself.
- Further out. Back Bay, Cambridge, Somerville, the airport hotels in East Boston and the suburbs south of the city all work, but every one of them puts a city drive and the parking question between you and the pavilion.
Suffolk’s only advice on the Seaport hotels is to book early for the best rate. Read that as a price warning: rooms will be there, but the good rates go first.
Suffolk’s own rooms for families
Last round Suffolk opened part of its One Court residence hall at 1 Court Street to visiting families for the long weekend, from the Friday to the Monday. Each unit was a private suite with one bedroom and its own bathroom, sleeping up to two, with linens, towels, elevators, air conditioning and wifi, at one fixed nightly price that included taxes and fees. There was no minimum stay, and payment was due in full at booking. Guests registered with a non-Suffolk email address and chose the commencement guest option.
For two parents, that is a downtown bed a few minutes from the campus at a price that does not move with demand. It is not on the waterfront, so the ceremony morning needs a short trip across to the Seaport. Whether the suites are offered again, and at what price, will be on Suffolk’s Families and Guests page.
What Suffolk has not announced yet
As of our last check, Suffolk’s commencement pages still describe the previous class. Still to come for the coming weekend:
- the venue, which last round was Leader Bank Pavilion;
- which day the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sawyer Business School walk, and the times of all three ceremonies;
- the guest ticket numbers and the extra-ticket lottery;
- whether the One Court family suites return.
Families travelling from abroad should not wait for all of it. Suffolk advises international guests to plan visas as early as possible, and its Division of Student Success issues letters confirming the commencement date, which graduates can request in person at 73 Tremont Street.

Drive times are road-network durations from Leader Bank Pavilion with no traffic, computed on the OSRM public router on 12 October 2026; a Boston weekend adds to them, and Suffolk warns that parking near the pavilion is very limited. Frequently asked questions
When is Suffolk University graduation 2027?
Suffolk's academic calendar sets commencement weekend for Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, 2027. The Law School calendar puts its ceremony on the Sunday. Suffolk has not yet said which day the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sawyer Business School ceremonies fall on, or their times.
Where is Suffolk University commencement held?
Last round it was at Leader Bank Pavilion, 290 Northern Avenue, on the Seaport waterfront, not on the downtown campus. The ceremonies take place under the pavilion's tent, with the graduates lining up outdoors along the Harborwalk. Suffolk has not yet named the venue for the coming weekend.
How many guest tickets do Suffolk graduates get?
Last round, four guaranteed tickets for each Sawyer Business School and College of Arts and Sciences graduate and ten for each Law graduate, with a lottery for extra tickets. Suffolk sets the numbers from the venue's capacity and the expected size of each ceremony. Children under three do not need a ticket, and lost tickets are not replaced.
What bags are allowed at Suffolk commencement?
Only clear plastic or vinyl totes no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, and small clutch bags of about 6 by 9 inches, which do not have to be clear. Diaper bags and medical bags are allowed. The rule applies to graduates and guests alike.
Is there parking at Leader Bank Pavilion for commencement?
Very little. Suffolk says on-street parking near the pavilion is very limited and points families to the paid lots nearby. Staying within walking distance in the Seaport avoids the question altogether.
Does Suffolk offer rooms for visiting families?
Last round it did: private one-bedroom suites with their own bathroom in the One Court residence hall at 1 Court Street, sleeping up to two, at a fixed nightly price that included taxes, for any of the nights from the Friday to the Monday, paid in full when booked. Check Suffolk's Families and Guests page to see whether they are offered again.
Where should we stay for Suffolk graduation?
For the ceremony itself, the Seaport: the Hyatt Place is across the street from the pavilion, and the Renaissance, the Seaport Hotel, the Omni and the Westin are all within about a mile. If you want to be near the campus and the restaurants downtown, there are about 30 hotels within three-quarters of a mile of Suffolk, a short drive from the pavilion.
