UNC Charlotte splits commencement into separate ceremonies by college in the Dale F. Halton Arena. The next ones start on Friday, December 11, 2026; the spring round is Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2027. Graduates can reserve up to eight guest tickets, and children two and under on a lap need none. Parking on campus is free. Strollers, backpacks and umbrellas are not allowed in the arena, and everyone passes through metal detectors.

Three ceremonies, and your graduate is in exactly one
UNC Charlotte is too big to graduate everyone at once. Each round is split into separate ceremonies in Halton Arena, grouped by college, and a family only needs the one their graduate is in.
The December round shows the pattern clearly:
- Friday morning: the Belk College of Business, the College of Computing and Informatics, the Cato College of Education and the William States Lee College of Engineering.
- Friday afternoon: the College of Arts + Architecture, Health and Human Services, Humanities and Earth and Social Sciences, and the Klein College of Science.
- Saturday morning: the Graduate School, for every doctoral, master’s and graduate certificate candidate.
That split changes the trip. A family with an engineering graduate is done by lunchtime on Friday. A family with a master’s graduate needs to be in Charlotte on Friday night. The spring round runs across a Friday and Saturday too, as the table shows; its ceremony schedule is published closer to the time, and the same college grouping is the thing to look for.
Eight tickets, reserved in a window
Every guest needs a ticket, except children aged two and under who sit on someone’s lap. Graduates can reserve up to eight, but only if they act in time. They receive an email with instructions to reserve tickets in the weeks before the ceremony, and there is a deadline. After it passes, the university says it will tell graduates how to reserve any extras that are left.
Tickets are mobile, managed through the Charlotte 49ers athletics ticketing account the graduate signs into with their university login. It is worth making sure every guest knows how to open theirs on a phone before the day.
Only graduates and commencement staff are allowed into the graduates’ assembly and seating areas, so relatives cannot walk in with them. Agree a meeting place before the ceremony; the university suggests exactly that.
Strollers stay outside, and so do umbrellas
Halton Arena is inside the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, and entry to it is strict. Everyone goes through metal detectors and a bag check, and bags must meet the clear-bag policy. On top of that, the university bans a list of things families often bring:
- Strollers. Not allowed in the arena. You can check one at guest services in the Student Activity Center food court.
- Umbrellas and backpacks. Not allowed.
- Balloons, banners, flags, signs and noisemakers. Not allowed.
Doors open 90 minutes before each ceremony, which also matters for anyone who needs accessible seating: it is limited, first come, first served, and guests have to collect an ADA pass in the food court first, with one companion seat available. A drop-off point for guests with limited mobility is at the Student Activity Center’s west entrance.
Parking is free, and the train stops on campus
Every campus lot and deck is free on commencement days, and police and parking attendants direct traffic. Shuttles run from two hours before each ceremony until an hour and a half after it ends, from East Deck, the Popp Martin Student Union and the UNC Charlotte Main light rail station. That last stop makes the light rail a real option for a family staying elsewhere in the city.
Rideshare drop-off and pick-up is at Lot 7A by Memorial Hall on University Road. One warning from the university is worth passing on: the route you are sent out of campus by may not be the one you came in on, and with three ceremonies’ worth of cars leaving over two days, traffic on the way out is heavy.
Where to sleep
UNC Charlotte has a hotel on its own campus, and its commencement site recommends it by name: the UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, with 226 rooms and suites, about two thirds of a mile from the arena. It is the room most families will try for first.
A mile west, University Place has a cluster of hotels built around the same exit off I-85. The Hilton there is the largest, with 393 rooms, and the Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn and Sleep Inn add about 420 more between them. None of the hotels near campus publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule.
Further out, Concord’s block of chain hotels at exit 49 is about ten minutes up I-85, and Uptown Charlotte about a quarter of an hour south-west without traffic. The airport is on the far side of the city, more than half an hour away.
We have not measured ceremony-weekend availability here, and the tables below say so. The pressure is on the rooms nearest the arena: three ceremonies in two days bring a large part of a very large graduating class into University City at once.

Frequently asked questions
When is UNC Charlotte graduation?
Twice a year, in December and May. The next ceremonies begin on Friday, December 11, 2026, in Halton Arena. The spring round is Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, 2027; its ceremony schedule is published later. Each round is several ceremonies, one per group of colleges.
Which ceremony is my graduate in?
It depends on their college. In December the Belk College of Business, Computing and Informatics, the Cato College of Education and the Lee College of Engineering walk on Friday morning; Arts and Architecture, Health and Human Services, Humanities and Earth and Social Sciences and the Klein College of Science on Friday afternoon; and every graduate degree on Saturday morning.
How many guest tickets does a UNC Charlotte graduate get?
Up to eight. Graduates get an email with instructions to reserve them in the weeks before the ceremony, and must reserve by the deadline in that email. If tickets are left over after the deadline, the university says it will tell graduates how to reserve more. Children aged two and under who sit on a lap do not need a ticket.
Can we bring a stroller into Halton Arena?
No. Strollers are not allowed in the arena, but they can be checked at guest services in the Student Activity Center food court. Backpacks, umbrellas, balloons, banners, flags, signs and noisemakers are not allowed either, and bags must meet the clear-bag policy.
Is parking free at UNC Charlotte for commencement?
Yes, in every campus lot and deck. Shuttles start two hours before each ceremony from East Deck, the Popp Martin Student Union and the UNC Charlotte Main light rail station. The university warns that the way out of campus may not be the way you came in.
How long is the ceremony?
About two hours. Doors open 90 minutes before each ceremony for graduates and guests, and every ceremony is livestreamed.
Where should we stay for UNC Charlotte graduation?
The UNC Charlotte Marriott is on campus and is the hotel the commencement site recommends. University Place, about a mile west, has four more hotels with about 810 rooms between them. Concord's I-85 hotels are about ten minutes further north-east.
