The University of Washington holds its Seattle commencement on Saturday, June 12, 2027, at Husky Stadium. Every guest needs a ticket; they are free, and the graduate orders them on the registration form. The start time for this round is not published yet. More than 100 school and department celebrations run separately, most in the week before, so your graduate's department decides how many nights you need.

The stadium is the easy part

UW’s Seattle commencement is a single afternoon in Husky Stadium, on the Saturday after spring finals end: one ceremony for the whole Seattle campus, to a start time UW publishes closer to the day. If that were the whole weekend, one night in Seattle would cover it.

It is not the whole weekend. UW counts more than 100 separate school, college, department and student-group celebrations, and its own guidance is that most of them happen in the week before the stadium day, or on the morning of it. These are the smaller, closer events: the business school’s undergraduate celebration, the Allen School of Computer Science’s, individual humanities departments, the hooding ceremonies for doctoral graduates. Each sets its own date, its own room, and sometimes its own ticket rule.

So the question that fixes your hotel nights is not “when is UW graduation”. It is “when is my graduate’s department party”. A family whose graduate’s celebration falls on the Tuesday is booking a different trip from one whose party is on the stadium morning. UW posts these listings from March, and until they are up, nobody outside the department can answer it.

UW Tacoma and UW Bothell are separate campuses for this purpose. Each holds its own commencement, on the days either side of the Seattle ceremony, in its own city.

Tickets are free, and nobody gets in without one

Every graduate and every guest needs an entrance ticket for Husky Stadium. They cost nothing. The graduate orders them on the Commencement registration and order form, which opens in spring, and collects them during pickup week with the cap and gown.

Two details matter for a large family. Seating is general admission, so a group that wants to sit together should arrive together. And UW’s stated position is generous: it asks graduates to confirm who is actually coming before ordering, then promises that every reasonable request will be met, with extra tickets available during pickup week at the University Book Store. This is not one of the campuses where a grandparent gets left out.

Guests who need wheelchair seating, a section without stairs, or the American Sign Language section order those tickets on the same form. Assistive listening devices are handed out near the main entrance.

Pack for a clear-bag stadium, and for Seattle in June

Husky Stadium runs a clear-bag policy on graduation day, and it is enforced at the gate. Allowed: a clear bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear resealable bag, or a small clutch roughly the size of a hand. Refused: purses, backpacks, camera cases, fanny packs and diaper bags.

The list of things you can bring is longer than people expect, and it reads like it was written by someone who has sat through a June afternoon in that stadium. Strollers are allowed for guests. So are umbrellas, blankets, seat cushions without zips or pockets, binoculars, still cameras, single servings of food, and water in factory-sealed bottles. UW says it will make allowances for guests with medical needs and for anyone caring for an infant.

Bring the umbrella and the blanket both. It is an open-air stadium on the edge of Lake Washington, and the afternoon can go either way.

Leave the car: the 1 Line stops at the stadium

The single most useful fact about this weekend is the light rail. Sound Transit’s 1 Line has a station called Univ of Washington, and UW’s own travel page says the train “will drop you directly in front of Husky Stadium”. The same line runs south through downtown Seattle to SeaTac/Airport, and north through the U District and Northgate to Lynnwood City Center.

That changes how to think about lodging. The question stops being “how close to campus can we get” and becomes “how close to a 1 Line station”. A family flying in can stay by the airport, ride the train to the stadium, and ride it back.

Driving works, but it takes planning. Campus parking on the stadium day is by permit only, sold lot by lot through the same registration form as the tickets, and UW warns that lots sell out. Department events on the surrounding days need their own day permits, bought on the same form. Shuttles run from the outlying garages through the afternoon. For a guest with limited mobility, the drop-off point is the Tubby Graves lot just north of the stadium. It closes for 30 to 45 minutes after the ceremony while traffic clears, so a pick-up plan that assumes an instant exit will be waiting.

Where to sleep

Walkable supply is thin. Four hotels sit within about a mile of the stadium, all in the U District, and between them they hold roughly 540 rooms: Graduate by Hilton on Brooklyn Avenue, the Silver Cloud by University Village, and the University Inn and the Watertown a block apart on Roosevelt Way. On a weekend when the stadium fills and a week of department events has already brought families in, those rooms go early. None of the four publishes a graduation-weekend minimum stay or prepayment rule, so the ordinary booking terms apply, and whatever the terms, the rooms themselves are the constraint.

Past that mile, Seattle’s hotel market is large, and the 1 Line reaches much of it. Downtown is under ten minutes by car with no traffic and one direct train ride away. Northgate and Lynnwood sit up the same line to the north. The airport hotels are at its southern end. Bellevue and Kirkland across the lake have large hotel bases too, but they are a drive over the SR 520 bridge rather than a train, which matters on a day when a full stadium is emptying onto the same roads.

We have not measured ceremony-weekend availability in Seattle, and the tables below say so rather than filling the gap with a guess. What we can say is where the pressure lands: on the rooms you can walk from, and on the nights your graduate’s department has chosen.

Not published yet

As of our last check, UW had not posted any of these for the coming round:

  • The start time. The last Seattle ceremony opened its doors at noon and began at 1:30 p.m. The new time goes on the Commencement site closer to the day.
  • The department schedule. The one that decides your nights. Listings start appearing in March.
  • The registration and order form. This is where tickets and parking permits come from. It opens in spring, for a limited window.

If you are booking now, book the stadium Saturday and hold the flexibility to add nights at the front of the week once the department date appears.

Drive times are road-network durations from Husky Stadium with no traffic, computed on the OSRM public router on 25 September 2026; add real time for a Saturday in June. Station names are Sound Transit's own for the 1 Line (Lynnwood City Center to Federal Way Downtown), which also stops at Univ of Washington. We have not measured ceremony-weekend availability for any of these towns, and nothing here claims we have.

Frequently asked questions

When is UW graduation 2027?

The Seattle campus ceremony is Saturday, June 12, 2027, at Husky Stadium. The UW registrar's academic calendar lists it alongside separate ceremonies for UW Tacoma and UW Bothell. The start time has not been published for this round. The last one opened its doors at noon and began at 1:30 p.m.

Do guests need tickets for Husky Stadium?

Yes. UW requires an entrance ticket for every graduate and every guest. The tickets cost nothing, seating is general admission, and the graduate orders them on the Commencement registration and order form. If more are needed after that, UW says they can be requested during pickup week at the University Book Store, and that all reasonable requests will be met.

What bag can I bring into Husky Stadium?

A clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear resealable bag, or a clutch about the size of a hand. Backpacks, purses, diaper bags, camera cases and fanny packs are refused at the gate. Guests may bring strollers, umbrellas, blankets, seat cushions without zips, and factory-sealed water bottles.

When are the UW department graduation ceremonies?

UW lists more than 100 school, college, department and student organization celebrations, and says most take place in the week before Commencement or on the morning of Commencement Day. Each one sets its own date, place and ticket rule, and UW starts posting them on its Commencement site in March.

Where should we stay for UW graduation?

Within walking distance there are four hotels holding about 540 rooms: Graduate by Hilton, Silver Cloud, University Inn and Watertown. Beyond those, pick anywhere near a 1 Line light rail station. The line stops in front of Husky Stadium and runs to downtown Seattle, Northgate, Lynnwood and the airport.

Is there parking at UW on graduation day?

Yes, by permit. Permits for the stadium day are sold lot by lot through the same registration and order form as the tickets, and UW warns that lots sell out. Shuttles run from the outlying garages. Light rail avoids the whole question.

Can family watch UW commencement online?

Yes. UW streams the stadium ceremony, and its Virtual Seats option is for family and friends who cannot be in Seattle.
