The University of Rhode Island holds commencement in the Thomas M. Ryan Center in Kingston. The next ceremony is on Saturday, December 12, 2026, and the spring ceremonies, one per college, run Friday, May 21, Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, 2027. Every graduate who attends has their name announced and crosses the stage. Only three chain hotels stand within about four miles, and URI itself tells families to book early because South County is a tourism destination.

The lodging problem is the headline here
Most commencement pages start with the date. URI’s needs to start with the rooms, because that is where the difficulty is.
Kingston is a village in South County, the shoreline region of Rhode Island. Around the Ryan Center there are no hotels at all. The nearest three chain hotels, a Hampton Inn, a Fairfield Inn and a Holiday Inn, are about four miles away near Route 1, and between them they have roughly 300 rooms. Past those, the choice is Narragansett’s small beach inns, the resorts of Jamestown and Newport across the bay, and the airport hotels in Warwick, most of them half an hour or more by road.
URI says as much itself. Its visitor page describes South County as a tourism destination and recommends making lodging and dining reservations early. Its own list of suggested hotels sends families mainly to Warwick and Newport.
And the spring ceremonies land on a particular weekend: the one before Memorial Day, when the Rhode Island shore is filling up for the season. A family that waits for the college schedule before booking is competing with beach-goers for the same handful of rooms.
One ceremony per college, over three days
URI’s spring commencement is not one event. It is a series of college ceremonies in the Ryan Center across a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the academic calendar has fixed the three days, shown in the table above.
Last round there were eight of them, running from late morning on the Friday to late afternoon on the Sunday: health sciences, business, arts and sciences, nursing, engineering, the environment and life sciences together with the Graduate School of Oceanography, education, and pharmacy. Each ceremony covered both bachelor’s and advanced degrees for its college, each had its own student speaker, and every graduate who took part was named and crossed the stage. The college-by-college schedule for the coming spring is not out yet.
The fall ceremony is simpler: a single Saturday-morning ceremony in the Ryan Center for everyone who finishes in the fall.
Tickets depend on how many register
Graduates have to register for the ceremony by a deadline, and URI then announces how many guest tickets each graduate gets, a few weeks before the day. The number is set by how many graduates register and by the Ryan Center’s capacity, so it is not known in advance. A graduate who registers late is not guaranteed any guest tickets at all. The fall round’s deadlines are in the dates table above; expect the spring round to work the same way, and make sure your graduate registers on time.
Getting to Kingston
URI’s own travel advice is unusually useful for a rural campus. The Kingston Amtrak station is less than a mile from campus, which makes the train from New York, Boston or Providence a genuine option. T. F. Green International Airport in Warwick is about 20 miles away. RIPTA buses stop on campus at the Memorial Union, and can drop off on Route 138 in front of Keaney Gymnasium, next to the Ryan Center.
For drivers, general parking for the Ryan Center is in the Plains Road Lot, Lot 25.
Where to sleep
With so few rooms close by, the useful question is how far you are willing to drive each day of a three-day weekend.
- About four miles: the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield Inn side by side in South Kingstown, and the Holiday Inn in Saunderstown. These are the first rooms to go.
- About a quarter of an hour: Wakefield and Narragansett, with small inns and beach hotels, busy in late May.
- Half an hour or more: Newport across the bay, the Warwick airport hotels that URI itself recommends, Westerly toward Connecticut, and Providence at the far end.
We found no special graduation-weekend terms, such as a two-night minimum or full prepayment, posted by any of the three. For the fall ceremony, a December Saturday, the pressure is far lower; for spring, we would book as soon as the dates are in the calendar. Our grade rests on the supply and URI’s own advice rather than on a measured count of free rooms, which we have not taken.

Drive times are road-network durations from the Ryan Center with no traffic, computed on the OSRM public router on 25 September 2026; a late-May Saturday on the Rhode Island shore will add to them. URI notes that the Kingston Amtrak station is less than a mile from campus. We have not measured ceremony-weekend availability in South County.
